Abstract

This community service aims to facilitate the economic sector for religious community organizations, especially towards the PRM Bangunjiwo Barat in the midst of competition from the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC). This community service is important because the Indonesian people generally lack awareness of the MEA. Empowerment in the economic sector, especially those based on micro, small and medium enterprises (SMEs) is very important when the flow of global capitalism into Indonesia is boundless and unstoppable. This is in line with the transformation of the theory of International Relations (IR) from traditional issues and high politics to issues based on non-traditional and community-based low politics, especially issues of development and human security. Human security issues include health security, food security, economic security, and others. The results of this community service have succeeded in facilitating partners and it is hoped that after the service they can increase their capacity in facing global competition, especially the AEC. Several important agendas were successfully implemented in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic, for example video editing workshops, product photos, introduction to e-commerce including helping register products in the Grab-food application, and philanthropic activities

Abstract

This article examines the publicly discussed 1 Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) scandal and its impact on Malaysian domestic politics. Following this case, Najib Razak as prime minister of Malaysia was under pressure. This is because of the strong allegation of Najib Razak’s involvement in the 1MDB scandal. This issue became public discourse after the widely report made by New York-based media Wall Street Journal concerning Najib’s abuse on the corporate asset. The scandal not only shakes Najib’s political coalition but also indirectly has provoked public distrust against him including from his political Guru, Mahathir Muhammad. Dr Mahathir openly accuses Najib’s behaviour and declare to quit from his longest loyal party, UMNO. Later on, this scenario has created a new political landscape in Malaysia. Therefore, this article attempts to examine the new Malaysian political landscape specifically the relationship of BN and the opposition vis-à-vis Mahathir political alliance. Nevertheless, history has witnessed that in the last election, Pakatan Harapan won the most dramatical election ever since the independence of Malaysia and UMNO-BN has lost the power. Yet, the political scenario surrounding 1MDB scandal and the relationship between UMNO-BN vis-à-vis other parties became one of the stories that always trigger public discourse, even until today.

Abstract

In general, regional integration takes the form of political economy initiatives focused on commercial interests to achieve broader socio-political and security goals. The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) is a regional organization in Southeast Asia. After the end of the Cold War, ASEAN underwent changes, especially in terms of norms, governance, and collective identity. This article aims to explain the institutional reform and transformation of ASEAN's identity as a regional organization after the end of Cold War era. Using Alexander Wendt's concept of Collective Identity, this article argues that the 1997-1998 crisis and political dynamics in Southeast Asia unraveled the weaknesses of ASEAN's traditional principles as a regional organization. This led to skepticism towards the credibility and function of ASEAN. In order to restore its image and credibility, ASEAN conducted institutional reform in some stages. The institutional reform started with conceptualizing shared ideas through the establishment of the ASEAN Community, which was then institutionalized in a set of norms through the ASEAN Charter. These institutional reforms gave birth to a common set of ideas and norms for the member states. These shared ideas and norms indicate the transformation of ASEAN's collective identity as a regional organization that is more in line with universal norms such as human rights, democracy, and good governance.

Abstract

Young people are the largest group of voters in Sabah compared to the adults and the elderly. Therefore, the percentage of votes of young people has a great influence on the victory of a certain party. Understanding the political demands of young voters will give an advantage to a political party during the election period and the process of governing a state or country. Thus, this study aims to identify the political demands of young voters in Sabah based on the zone and parliament boundaries. A total of 1609 voters in Sabah aged 21 to 40 were interviewed through survey methods. Raw data obtained were then analyzed using Principal Component Analysis (PCA) techniques presented in the form of thematic maps using the Geography Informatics System (GIS) application. From the analysis, it was found that there are five political demands required among young voters in Sabah according to ranks, i.e., the provision of welfare assistance, high-caliber local leaders, space for political involvement, state stability, and territorial equality rights. The rankings of each of these political demands are found to vary according to the zone and parliament boundaries. For Inland Zones, especially Tenom and Pensiangan Parliaments, the ranking of political demands among young voters in this area is more focused on the aspect of providing welfare assistance. In contrast, the young voters in the Central West Zone, especially in Penampang and Putatan Parliaments, are more focused on the Regional territorial equality rights.

Abstract

The development of nationalism in Malaysian society is one of the important aspects that is frequently explored by social and humanities scientists. However, the debate on this matter is more focused on Malaya and Sarawak, causing the documentation on the development of nationalism among the people of Sabah to still be far from what’s expected. This situation indirectly influenced the meaning of the writings of Western scholars who stated that Sabah is a “state without politics” before and after the early years of World War ll. Whereas, the development of nationalism among the people is also not much different from the national consciousness in both the regions centered on Indonesia. Even so, the effort to trace this linkage is not given enough attention that it is possible the influence of Indonesia in raising the nationalism spirit of the Sabah people is not known by the general public. Therefore, this writing aims to reveal the development of nationalism in Sabah which was also directly driven by Indonesian figures in Sabah based on the emergence of Barisan Pemuda (BARIP). This effort was highlighted by elevating the role of Indonesian figures in mobilising BARIP as one of the political organisations that fought for independence from the British since they had earlier been exposed to the disadvantages of imperialism and colonialism. The data collection of this article was conducted through interviews with several proto witnesses who were either directly involved or saw the BARIP radical movement. The authors also conducted library studies by collecting intelligence reports in the National Archives and Zakaria Gunn’s private collection in the form of personal letters. With that later, this writing is not only able to offer a new dimension in understanding the nationalism development of Sabah society but also puts the position of Indonesian figures at sensible places in the historiography of Sabah politics.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to explain the dynamics of the Iraqi Kurdish struggle before and after the saddam Hussein era. In this study, the authors explain how the dynamics of the Iraqi Kurdish struggle in obtaining regional autonomy as well as Saddam Hussein's political attitudes and leadership style. Iraq's still-fruitless Kurdish struggle with the crisis Baghdad is experiencing in the frame of a long conflict entering a phase of mutually hurting stalemate has led the two to choose the path of peace negotiations. Although Baghdad's peace treaty deal deal with the Kurds was hampered on the Kirkuk issue, with the phenomenon of the withdrawal of Iraqi troops from the UN protected zone and its migration of Saddam Hussein loyalists from the Territory of Northern Iraq made the opportunity for the Kurds to take over the region so that in 1992 under the shadow of the UN and allies, the KDP and PUK held free elections and established a Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) for the Arbil region, Dohuk, and Sulaymanya. The KRG also turned the unarmed Peshmerga fighters into a regional defense force that would maintain peace and stability in the region. At this time the Kurds were able to create a safe and stable environment conducive to private and public investment.

Abstract

This study investigates the extent to which President Joe Biden's speech before the 77th session of the UN General Assembly reflects US foreign policy towards Russia and Ukraine. The sample of this study was sourced from manuscripts of President Joe Biden's speeches obtained through the official US state website (www.whitehouse.com), which were then elaborated with referential sources, such as website articles, online news, and journal articles accessed via Scopus and Google Scholar. The study used Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) to analyze President Biden's speech, delivered on September 21, 2022. The speech was transcribed and analyzed utilizing the VOS Viewer and NVivo 12 Plus applications. The findings revealed that President Biden's speech emphasized the importance of the sovereign equality principle and criticized the inconsistent use of the Veto Right by Russia and the US in the UN Security Council. The speech also discouraged Russophobia and implied a willingness to engage in diplomatic negotiations with Russia. This research contributes to the literature on US foreign policy towards Russia and Ukraine by providing a detailed analysis of President Biden's speech. The findings suggest that the US is committed to upholding the sovereign equality principle and engaging in constructive diplomacy with Russia.
