Abstract

Student well-being in the context of an elementary school in Indonesia has not been much studied. Accordingly, the effort of developing relevant indicators for revealing student well-being has not been done too. Along with the increase of public awareness of student well-being at school, appropriate tools to measure it is greatly needed. This study aimed to develop an instrument for measuring student well-being in elementary school. The scale was based on the review of research on children's well-being by Pollard and Lee and was adapted for school context using the psychological well-being approach suggested by RyffandKeyes. This study had three parallel scales, each of which was tested, on 200 respondents. Accordingly, the study involved 600respondents. The results of the analysis of the scales were used as basist for preparing a compilation scale. It was then tested on215respondents. The results of the analysis showed that 39items composed had satisfying psychometric properties, i.e. the reliability coefficient, item discrimination index, and content validity. However, the structural factor still needed to be improved.

Abstract

Abstract

Students have a diversity of needs that are often not well accommodated by teachers. This study aims to develop and determine the quality of differentiated learning teaching modules for subjects Indonesian question sentence material for grade II students. The development of differentiated teaching modules is expected to assist teachers in compiling learning activities based on the diversity of students. This research was carried out at Mangunan Experimental Elementary School using ADDIE type Research and Development research. The teaching module developed contains the steps for making and examples of learning designs. This research was validated by three validators who then tested the module on a learning group of 26 grade 2 students with the results of the initial assessment having different learning readiness, interests and learning styles, and four students with special needs: autism, slow learners, speech delay, and ADHD. Based on the results of expert validation, the quality of teaching modules is stated to be very good judging from the module criteria, namely: containing essential material, fostering interest, challenging, relevant, providing learning based on the results of assessment of student needs, presenting variations in the learning process, content, products, and environment. The results of the trial at the first meeting, showed an increase in understanding by 73.90% in learning question sentences. Learners show enthusiasm and increased involvement in the learning process as their learning readiness, interests, and learning styles are accommodated. This research is limited to the trial of the first meeting of the teaching module and still requires trials for subsequent meetings for more comprehensive results

Abstract

In 21st-century learning, life skills are indicated to be essential. Basic literacy is known to be one of them. Unfortunately, Indonesia is indicated to be low in literacy. Despite the Gerakan Literasi Sekolah [School Literacy Movement] offered by the government, literacy results are still low. This analysis indicated that improvement in Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) is needed. This condition encouraged us to introduce essential questions as a part of language literacy to teachers to develop basic literacy skills. Reviews indicated that essential questions were effective to stimulate HOTS. Adopting educational design research, the researcher provided a diagnostic test to identify teachers’ literacy levels. The diagnostic was then followed by a short workshop to assist teachers to develop learning scenarios with essential questions in it. The learning scenarios developed by teachers suggested the requirement for teachers to have more practice in developing essential questions. Therefore, a module with step-by-step ways to develop essential questions followed by thorough workshops and training needs to be proposed as the follow-up.

Abstract

There have been many calls for concern for students with special needs. However, many schools under the Catholic Foundation are still experiencing obstacles in providing adequate learning accommodations for them. This research seeks to make a design proposal for a Guide to Celebrating Diversity in regular schools which are in the process of becoming inclusive schools. The design was prepared based on a needs analysis result. The design was based on literature searches and good practices in various inclusive schools and the basics of Jesuit and Montessori education. The designs prepared are given input by expert practitioners and submitted to teachers at schools to get input. This design is very likely to be used by school stakeholders. The main principle that needs to be considered is the Foundation's policy regarding the preparation of human resources, acceptance of new students, curriculum accommodation, the prepared environment, and funding. Abstract

Elementary school-age children need increased inhibitory control to focus and put aside things that are not priorities. Inhibitory control helps children to stay focused, control behavior, think before they act, and manage emotions. However, efforts specifically to increase the ability of inhibitory control have not been made much. This study aims to develop a guidebook to improve inhibitory control in children aged 10-12 years through the game "Self-Steering". This research is development research with the following steps: First, conducting a needs analysis through teacher interviews and classroom observations. Second, planning the manufacture of products as a solution to research problems. Third, making the product. Fourth, testing the product through expert validation and limited trials. Fifth, improving the product based on suggestions for improvement at the product trial stage. The result of this study is a game guidebook containing 3 inhibitory control games that were declared feasible by expert validators. Based on the field trial results, this game guidebook is an interesting game guide to improve children's inhibitory control. Some things that need to be improved will be discussed further.

Abstract

Early childhood is a golden age to learn a language, not only the mother tongue but also a second or third language. However, learning media that can be used to attract children's interest in learning multi-language is still limited. Therefore, this study aims to develop a smart doll that attracts children to learn Javanese, English, and Indonesian. In particular, this media is intended to help children recognise colours in three languages. This research is developmental research with the following steps: First, collecting information about the product being developed, conducting a literature review and interviewing teachers and parents. Second, planning product design in accordance with the results of the needs analysis. Third, developing the initial product form. Fourth, conducting a preliminary field test on 3 children. Fifth, revising the main product. Sixth, field testing on eight children. Seventh, evaluate the testing result for the next development plan. The result of this research is a prototype of a smart doll that is able to recognize colours in 3 languages. Based on the field trials results, the prototype of this smart doll can attract children’s enthusiasm for learning colours and improve their ability to recognise colours in three languages. Some things that need to be improved will be discussed further.

Abstract

Creating a pleasant classroom atmosphere is an important element in starting the learning process. In various studies, listening to songs or singing them has been shown to have a positive effect on a student's mood for participating in the learning process. However, children's songs that are relevant to be used as teaching media are very limited. This study aims to develop new songs that are suitable for thematic learning of the 2nd-grade elementary school (SD) students which also can be used as an online learning medium. The songs developed include 6 themes in the 2nd-grade curriculum. Songs were developed using the ADDIE method. The result of this study is an album containing 6 children's songs according to the 2013 Curriculum theme. The results of expert validation show that the songs have good quality in terms of song titles, song atmosphere, language style, song content, and song characteristics. Based on the test result with students, these songs can be sung easily and give a positive feeling effect.
