Abstract

Background: Dry dams serve as flood-control mechanisms in urban regions subjected to extremehydrometeorological conditions. The Sukamahi Dry Dam, the first dry dam in Indonesia, has been operationalsince 2022 and mitigates peak discharges toward Jakarta. This study assessed the implementation of occupationalhealth and safety (OHS) measures, identified potential hazards, and evaluated risk levels associated with the dam’soperational activities. Method: Hazard identification and risk assessment methodology was applied to categorize hazards and computerisk scores on the basis of consequence, exposure, and likelihood. Data collection involved field observations, interviews with 26 personnel, and a review of operational documents at the Sukamahi Dry Dam in 2024. Results: Six primary operational tasks, most notably crane hoist operations and work conducted at heights, presented significant risks, with consequence scores of 100. Major deficiencies were identified, including theabsence of fall protection systems, undocumented inspections of lifting equipment, outdated standard operatingprocedures (SOPs), and inconsistent use of protective equipment. Irregular training, the absence of safety officers, limited emergency preparedness, and a reactive safety culture exacerbate these hazards. Conclusion: Current OHS practices are inadequate for ensuring safe operations. Such practices can be improvedthrough competency-based training, the establishment of risk-based SOPs with clear standards, safety audits, improved emergency response, and the integration of digital monitoring technology to enhance worker protection and ensure the reliability of flood control measures.

Abstract

Clean water and proper sanitation are fundamental human needs. Nganti Village, located in Ngraho Subdistrict, Bojonegoro Regency, faces significant drought and clean water shortages, particularly during the dry season. The water quality remains subpar despite the presence of springs and water reservoirs. Consequently, processing raw water from the village's reservoir can offer a viable solution. This service activity aims to harness water reservoirs as a clean water source through multimedia filter (MMF) technology. The activities, conducted from 2022 to the end of 2023, encompass four stages: socializing the program plans, constructing multimedia filters (MMF), installing the water treatment unit on-site, and evaluating water quality, followed by necessary follow-ups. The primary activities involve installing water treatment units with MMF technology in collaboration with village officials and the community. The treated water is then tested for quality at the IPB University laboratory. Test results indicate that MMF technology significantly improves water quality, reducing parameters such as Magnesium, Manganese, Calcium, Iron, and Phosphate by 25.8‒97.8%, thus meeting quality standards. However, some parameters, such as TSS, COD, and Zinc, still exceed quality standards, necessitating further processing. This advanced water treatment requires involvement from the local government, particularly in funding through community empowerment programs, to install advanced treatment units and provide operational support for these units.

Abstract

Indonesia’s palm oil industry generates large volumes of palm oil mill effluent (POME) characterized by high organic load and suspended solids, requiring effective treatment. This study evaluates a continuous hybrid system consisting of a kapok fiber(KF) pre-treatment unit, electrocoagulation (EC) reactor, and Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor (MBBR), operated under varying plate materials (Fe, Al, Cu) at 24 V and 10 A. The system treated raw POME (pH 3.4; sCOD 20,796 mg/L; TSS 25,610 mg/L; oil and grease 3,243mg/L) over 10-day operational cycles per condition. Results show that copper electrodes achieved the highest performance, with sCOD removal up to 66% and oil and grease removal up to 81.38%, alongside improved TSS reduction. The KF unit contributed 46–53% oil and grease removal, while EC primarily reduced suspended solids and adjusted pH, supporting stable MBBR performance. The combined configuration highlights the interaction between physicochemical and biological processes, where electrode selectionand pre-treatment significantly influence overall system efficiency. These findings provide insight into optimizing integrated treatment strategies for high-strength POME, although additional polishing steps are still required to meet discharge standards.
