Abstract

Honey has long been recognized for its beneficial properties for human health. Galo-galo honey is proven to contain various beneficial substances for human health, including minerals, polyphenols, vitamins, amino acids, carotenoids, enzymes, organic acids, and volatile compounds. However, many people still doubt the authenticity of honey available in the market. This activity aims to socialize the potential of galo-galo beekeeping and the benefits of galo-galo honey in supporting community health, as well as a nutritious food source for toddlers experiencing stunting. The cultivation of galo-galo bees is expected to become an additional source of income for the residents of Nagari Bukik Sikumpa, Lareh Sago Halaban District. This activity involves direct socialization and training for the community by galo-galo beekeepers, including visits to galo-galo bee houses. The outcome of this activity shows the high enthusiasm of the community toward this initiative, with active participation and numerous inquiries about the techniques of cultivating galo-galo bees and their benefits. Through this outreach program, the community's knowledge about the benefits and advantages of galo-galo bees has increased. This knowledge is not only beneficial in the context of galo-galo honey cultivation and production as a sideline business but also has a positive impact on overall community health. Specifically, galo-galo honey can be used as an additional nutritional source to assist toddlers experiencing stunting in Nagari Bukik Sikumpa. Thus, this activity holds significant potential to improve community welfare and support efforts to enhance the health of children in that community.

Abstract

Household organic waste can be used as raw material to produce Liquid Organic Fertilizer (LOF) as an effort to reduce the amount of solid waste disposed of at Temporary Disposal Sites (TPS). The organic fertilizer produced can be reused in home gardens, such as for ornamental or fruit plants. In addition to being used as fertilizer, LOF can be used as a starter for making other organic fertilizers or as a decomposer in the production of compost. The community empowerment activities in making LOF aim to raise awareness of the potential of household waste as a valuable resource. Through a participatory approach, the community is encouraged to actively engage in the process of converting waste into LOF, which benefits agriculture and the environment. The empowerment and community development activities regarding the application of simple LOF production were conducted at RT 03 RW 09, Tanjung Berok, Kurao Pagang Sub-District, Padang City. The activities included socialization, education, and practical training on converting household organic waste into LOF using buckets as containers. As a result of these activities, the community gained increased knowledge in processing household organic waste into LOF and Microorganism Liquid (MOL), which can be used for fruit and ornamental plants in their yards and residential areas. The attendees realized the importance of protecting the environment by managing their household waste and avoiding disposing of waste into water channels.

Abstract

Abstract. Komala PS, Azhari RM, Hapsari FY, Edwin T, Ihsan T, Zulkarnaini, Harefa M. 2022. Comparison of bioconcentration factor of heavy metals between endemic fish and aquacultured fish in Maninjau Lake, West Sumatra, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 23: 4026-4032. Fish have a high risk of accumulating metals and poses a risk of entering human bodies through the food chain. This study aims to analyze the concentration of lead (Pb), mercury (Hg), and cadmium (Cd) spatially and temporally as well as the Bioconcentration Factor (BCF) in endemic fish (Rasbora argyrotaenia) and aquacultured fish (Oreochromis niloticus) in Maninjau Lake and its relationship to environmental parameters (pH, DO and temperature). Sampling was conducted at domestic, hydropower, fish cage, and endemic fisheries. Spatial and temporal distribution using one-way ANOVA with 95% significance, while parameter correlation using linear regression. Almost all heavy metals in both fish samples exceeded the permissible level except in endemic fisheries sites. Metal concentrations in both fish species spatially showed a significant difference, while temporally showed no significant difference. Rasbora argyrotaenia showed a slightly higher BCF value than O.niloticus. The BCF values were low accumulative with order Pb>Hg>Cd ??in R. argyrotaenia and Pb>Cd>Hg for O. niloticus. There is a strong and positive correlation between temperature and the BCF value of both fish species for the three different metals. Monitoring fish by keeping metal content within acceptable limits is necessary. Further research on risk analysis of fish consumption in humans is recommended.

Abstract

Abstract. Zainuddin EN, Gumelar G, Ismail S, Rustama MM, Zulkarnaini Z. 2025. First identification of marine anammox in Indonesia under tropical aquaculture conditions. Biodiversitas 26: 6469-6479. Marine anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox) bacteria offer a promising and sustainable pathway for nitrogen removal from aquatic environments, particularly in shrimp aquaculture, where nitrogen-rich waste can cause environmental problems. This study aimed to identify marine anammox bacteria (MAB) under tropical conditions in two filter bioreactors (FtBRs) operated at tropical ambient temperatures with seawater salinity of 32-33 ppt. FtBR 1 was inoculated with intensive shrimp pond sludge, while FtBR 2 received a mixture of sludge and freshwater anammox granules (Candidatus Brocadia fulgida). Microbial community profiling was performed using Illumina HiSeq sequencing targeting the V3-V4 regions of the 16S rRNA gene. Both reactors successfully enriched the marine anammox species Candidatus Scalindua wagneri, accounting for 7% (FtBR 1) and 21% (FtBR 2) of the phylum Planctomycetota. In contrast, Candidatus Brocadia fulgida failed to survive under high salinity. Notably, Xanthomarina gelatinilytica emerged as the dominant genus in both systems, suggesting its important role in the hydrolysis and mineralization of organic nitrogen originating from shrimp aquaculture sludge. MAB were successfully identified and enriched despite their low relative abundance, suggesting potential interactions with co-occurring denitrifying communities. This study represents the first documented identification of MAB in Indonesia. These findings represent the first documented presence of MAB in Indonesia from aquaculture sludge. This work provides a foundation for developing localized, low-energy nitrogen removal technologies for sustainable shrimp aquaculture in coastal regions.

Abstract

The accumulation of garbage in the community of Korong Talogondan, Nagari Kurai Taji, Nan Sabaris Subdistrict, Padang Pariaman District can cause foul odors and various environmental problems. Concern for treatment of the generated waste needs to be increased by enhancing understanding due to the lack of knowledge and skills among residents in waste management. Therefore, the process of managing and processing organic waste needs to be done at the source, namely households. On the other hand, farmers need fertilizers for agriculture, with prices continuously rising and soil fertility declining due to improper fertilization practices. This activity aims to provide information, knowledge, and practical experience in processing organic waste into liquid fertilizer using local microorganisms (MOL). MOL was made using kitchen waste, rice washing water, granulated sugar, and brown sugar available in every household kitchen. The activity was conducted by delivering materials on the potential of household organic waste as organic fertilizer and as an effort to overcome garbage accumulation. Increasing residents' motivation was done through direct discussions and practicing simple techniques for processing organic waste in groups. The results of this outreach show the community's interest and enthusiasm in utilizing organic waste to make liquid fertilizer, which can reduce environmental pollution, has economic value, and can provide nutrients to agricultural plants, replacing synthetic fertilizers. The production of MOL from household waste needs to be increased so that every household already has an effort to reduce garbage accumulation in order to maintain environmental quality.

Abstract

Hasil menunjukkan bahwa seluruh parameter fisik (pH 8,0 - 8,4; suhu 23,6 - 30,1°C; DO 5,2 - 5,6 mg/L) masih memenuhi baku mutu air Kelas II PP RI No. 22 Tahun 2021.
