Abstract

This study highlights the integration of metacognitive strategies in reading comprehension through a novel Three-phases instructional model, focusing on metacognitive strategies (pre-reading, while-reading, post-reading). This innovative model is distinct in its holistic approach to enhancing students' reading comprehension by activating their prior knowledge, engaging them actively in the reading process, and fostering reflective comprehension towards a successful strategic reading journey. Targeting narrative texts, the research was conducted with 70 junior school students from Tanjung Morawa, specifically selected for their lower proficiency in reading comprehension, highlighting the model's focus on addressing the needs of struggling readers. Through a mixed-method approach, employing both tests and questionnaires for data collection, the study demonstrated that the instructional model significantly boosts students' reading comprehension. The mean score improvement from 62.85 (pre-test) to 83.71 (post-test) underscores the model's effectiveness and its potential to significantly enhance students' reading comprehension skills. A survey of 35 students further validated the model's role in elevating their awareness and motivation for reading, with making a prediction which got 28 (80.0%) is the most commonly used, followed by restating ideas with 23 (65.7%) and thinking aloud with 21 (60.0%). These results not only bridge the existing gap in reading instruction but also carry significant implications for educational practices and literacy development. It serves as a testament to the potential of innovative instructional models in enhancing reading comprehension.

Abstract

This study provides a comprehensive typological analysis of the grammatical characteristics of subjects in Acehnese, focusing on the unique subject properties in this lesser-studied language. Utilizing a qualitative descriptive methodology, data were sourced from Acehnese language corpora and existing grammatical accounts. Selective sampling identified 200 sentences, which were analyzed across six syntactic parameters: fronting, floating quantifier, control, relativization, word order, and interrogative sentence construction. The analysis employed distributional and permutation techniques to identify patterns and deviations in subject behavior. Findings reveal that Acehnese subjects, typically noun phrases preceding verbs, can function as patients in transitive clauses without distinct marking. Crucially, Acehnese does not conform to a single 'subject' relation; instead, syntactic processes differentiate between Actor and Undergoer roles. This non-conformity to conventional typological theories underscores the unique syntactic structure of Acehnese. The results highlight the flexible and complex nature of grammatical relations in Acehnese, challenging traditional notions of subjecthood. This study contributes significantly to the broader understanding of syntactic diversity, emphasizing the need for refined and flexible theoretical frameworks in grammatical relations. By illuminating the intricate grammatical systems in Acehnese, the research underscores the importance of adaptable models in linguistic theory to accurately capture the diversity and complexity inherent in human languages. This insight is crucial for advancing linguistic typology and enhancing comparative linguistic analysis in the Southeast Asian region.

Abstract

This study addresses a critical gap in sports linguistics by exploring the cognitive semantic role of metonymy in digital soccer journalism, an area that remains underexamined despite its pervasive use in media discourse. Using a corpus-based cognitive semantic approach, this qualitative study examines the prevalence and patterns of metonymy in soccer news articles published on Goal.com. A purposive sampling technique was employed to select 250 news articles collected from August 2021 to May 2024, providing a robust dataset for analysis. The findings reveal that "whole for part" metonymy dominates, where teams, leagues, or nations substitute for individual players or components, reinforcing collective identity and aligning with readers’ cognitive schemas. Metonymic collocations also exhibit consistent patterns, with renowned teams and leagues frequently serving as proxies for players and events, demonstrating a cognitive preference for associating collective entities with their constituents. These results highlight metonymy’s role in simplifying narratives, enhancing audience engagement, and shaping cultural representations in digital sports media. Beyond its linguistic significance, this study contributes to English Language Teaching (ELT) by demonstrating how metonymy-based corpus analysis fosters critical reading, discourse analysis, and media literacy. Sports journalism serves as an engaging pedagogical resource for teaching pragmatic competence and lexical awareness, helping learners decode implicit meanings and cognitive framing. By showcasing metonymy’s role in narrative efficiency and cognitive engagement, this study underscores its broader implications for media studies, cognitive linguistics, sports journalism, and ELT.
