Abstract

This study was conducted to investigate the effect of lexical inferencing strategies on students’ reading comprehension. This study was aimed was to find out whether the use of lexical inferencing strategies had effect on students’ reading comprehension. The population of this study was 90 Informatics Engineering students of Potensi Utama University in the fifth semester of 2014-2015 academic year. A placement test was given to 90 students to select 60 similar English proficiency level students. The instruments used for collecting data were written test and spoken test. These tests were conducted to identify students’ reading comprehension performance toward lexical inferencing strategies. These data were analysed by applying an experimental research design involving pre-test and post-test which were administered for control and experimental groups. The control group was taught by using conventional method, while the experimental group was treated by using lexical inferencing strategies. The results of the test showed that the use of the lexical inferencing strategies had significantly affected to students’ reading comprehension performance. Hence, it was concluded that lexical inferencing strategies was recommended to improve the students’ reading comprehension performance.

Abstract

Tagline is one way to attract the customer attention to remember the products with the catch-up phrase. An ad tagline can create a new image of its brand and also provide a persuasive effect that affects the audience behavior. The effectiveness of an advertisement is very important to analyze. This research uses qualitative methods to analyze the use of multimodal linguistics in looking at the effectiveness of Tolak Angin Sidomuncul ad. Mutlitodal elements are analyzed in Tolak Angin Sidomuncul ad applying systemic functional linguistics (SFL) in analyzing the multimodal elements such as linguistic, visual, audio, gestural, and spastial elements. The results of this research showed that the use of multimodal elements in Tolak Angin Sidomuncul Ads are interconnected each other to convey the meaning and message which aims to attract the attention of audience to buy Tolak Angin Sidomuncul products.

Abstract

This research is aimed to find out types of error analysis of using simple present tense in descriptive text written by the eighth grade students of SMP Bina Satria Medan. This research used the qualitative research design. The sample of this research was the eighth grade students of SMP Bina Satria Medan which consisted of 20 students. The result of the data analysis showed that there were the types of errors made by the students on writing descriptive text based on surface strategy taxonomy which are classified into omission, addition, misformation, and misordering. The types of errors made by the students on writing descriptive text were 25% in errors of omission, 22,4% in errors of Addition, 49,2% in errors of Misformation, 3,4 % in errors of Ordering. From this data, it can be said that the misformation error was the highest number of errors made by the students in 49,2%.There were some causes of errors made by students in misformation. Firstly, the students felt confused with tense formula, they still could not distinguish regular and irregular verbs, which are present tense and past tense. Secondly, the students made mistakes in arranging word or confused to select the word sequence in sentence which important to formation writing that meanwhile to arrange the word and group of words in English and Indonesia are different. Thirdly, The students made errors because they didn’t know grammar rule, they were lazy to learn about tense, they couldn’t interpret sentences or paragraph directly and many other reasons. Therefore, it can be stated that source of the errors made by students influenced by interlingual and intralingual transfer(Corder, 2000). Interlingual transfer is errors that are influenced by the interference of users’ mother tongue. The users still apply Indonesian pattern into English when they translate the sentences. Then Intralingual transfer occurs when students get difficulty learn the second language. Three causes of errors in intralingual transfer, namely; errors caused by over-generalization, errors caused by ignorance of rule restriction, and errors caused by incomplete application of rules.

Abstract

This research analyses domestication and foreignization strategies in translating the Javanese cultural words in Years of the Voiceless novel. The objective of this research was to obtain the most frequent strategies used in altering Javanese cultural words that influence the ideology used in the translation of the Years of the Voiceles novel. This research was a qualitative descriptive method. The data collection was by reading source and target texts with note taking techniques. The method of data analysis used content analysis with a comparison strategy of translated text in the novel and source text. The theory used to analyze the translation ideology was Venuti (2008) while the theory used to analyze Javanese cultural words was Newmark's theory of cultural categories. The result of the research showed that there was an influence of domestication ideology in the translation of the novel the years of the voiceless at the Javanese cultural words. The domestication was the dominant strategy used in translating Javanese cultural words in the Years of Voiceless novel. Therefore, It indicates the translator tend to maintain Javanese cultural words in ST into English culture words in TT.

Abstract

Pemahaman teks berbahasa Inggris merupakan satu kompetensi yang diperlukan untuk menguasai materi teks yang diajarkan. Tujuan kegiatan pengabdian ini adalah meningkatkan pemahaman teks bacaan berbahasa Inggris menerapkan metode SQ3R. Sasaran kegiatan ini adalah siswa SMA Harapan 1 Medan. Metode pelaksanan kegiatan dilakukan melalui penyampaian materi mengenai cara penerapan metode SQ3R dan pengerjaan latihan soal tes pemahaman bacaan berbahasa Inggris. Hasil kegiatan mengindikasikan bahwa adanya peningkatan pengetahuan siswa mengenai cara menerapkan metode SQ3R yang berdampak pada peningkatan kemampuan pemahaman siswa melalui angket dan hasil tes. Hasil angket menunjukkan bahwa 90% siswa telah memahami cara menerapkan metode SQ3R yang berdampak pada peningkatan kemampuan pemahaman siswa. Hasil tes siswa menunjukkan nilai rata rata kemampuan pemahaman siswa memperoleh 80 poin. Dari hasil kegiatan ini dapat disimpulkan bahwa implementasi metode SQ3R mampu meningkatkan pemahaman siswa SMA Harapan 1 Medan

Abstract

ABSTRACT - This study aims to determine the application of the Community Language Learning method in improving students' speaking skills in English. The research was conducted on students of grade X SMA Nurul Hasanah Tembung. Based on the percentage of completeness of student learning outcomes, it can be seen that at the stage of the first cycle, the mastery of student learning outcomes was obtained by 65% and in the second cycle, the mastery of students’ learning outcomes increased to 74%. While the average value of the two cycles shows that there are 23 students (74%) who experience completeness, while as many as 8 students (26%) do not experience completeness in the students' English speaking skills using the Community Language Learning method. Thus, it can be stated that this research is successful and it is proven that the use of the Community Language Learning method can improve students' English speaking skills. where 70% of the total number of students can follow the learning process well and have achieved an average score of 70.Keywords: Speaking Skills, English, Community Language Learning Method

Abstract

Diskusi merupakan sebuah interaksi komunikasi antara dua orang atau lebih/kelompok yang bertujuan untuk memberikan rasa pemahaman yang baik dan benar. Keberadaan diskusi ini sangat dibutuhkan dalam proses pembelajaran khususnya dalam meningkatkan ketangkasan intelektual mahasiswa. Tujuan penelitian ini ialah untuk melihat perbandingan tingkat kepuasan pemakaian diskusi face to face dengan diskusi online dalam meningkatkan ketangkasan intelektul mahasiswa. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode perbandingan dengan menggunakan uji independent sampel T test dan uji chi square. Hasil penelitian ini ialah kepuasan pemakaian diskusi face to face sebesar 97% merasa puas sedangkan 3% lagi tidak merasa puas. Sedangkan untuk kepuasan pemakaian diskusi online sebesar 89% merasa puas sedangkan 11% lagi tidak puas. Sedangkan, hasil uji Independent t test terlihat bahwa nilai sig F hitung untuk penghasilan dengan Equal Variance Assumed adalah 0,735. Oleh karena itu sig F hitung > 0,05 dan hasil Uji Chi Square nilai Asymp sig adalah 0,01 < 0,05 dan juga dapat dilihat dari nilai chi square hitung adalah 10,643 > chi square tabel yaitu 3,84. Maka, dapat dijelaskan bahwa pemakaian diskusi face to face lebih efektif daripada diskusi online dikarenakan diskusi ini berlangsung dengan lebih fokus dan peserta dapat bertanya secara langsung kepada para pembicara tanpa terkendala apapun.

Abstract

Memahami teks bahasa Inggris adalah keterampilan yang harus dimiliki siswa untuk menguasai materi yang diajarkan. Namun, beberapa siswa mengalami kesulitan memahami teks bahkan setelah membaca teks berulang kali. Satu masalah yang sering dihadapi siswa adalah ketidakmampuan memahami maksud dan tujuan sebuah teks. Oleh karena itu, kegiatan ini penting sebagai solusi bagi siswa untuk memahami teks bahasa Inggris. Salah satu cara untuk mendukung pemahaman membaca siswa adalah dengan metode PQ4R. Target kegiatan ini adalah siswa SMP Amalyatul Huda. Kegiatan dilakukan dengan menyediakan materi penerapan metode PQ4R dan mengerjakan latihan tes pemahaman bahasa Inggris. Dari hasil kegiatan diketahui bahwa pemahaman siswa tentang penerapan metode PQ4R meningkat yang berdampak pada peningkatan pemahaman siswa melalui angket dan hasil tes. Dari hasil angket diketahui bahwa 92% siswa memahami cara penggunaan metode PQ4R, dan efektif dalam meningkatkan pemahaman siswa. Hasil tes menunjukkan nilai rata rata pemahaman siswa memperoleh 75 poin. Dari hasil kegiatan dapat disimpulkan bahwa implementasi metode PQ4R mampu meningkatkan pemahaman siswa SMP Amalyatul Huda.
