Abstract

Communication errors in the treatment process will have an impact on the safety and security of patients in the hospital. The emergence of wrong perceptions among health professionals can result in conflict or harm to the patient, leading to lawsuits. The purpose of this study was to identify the nurse's ability to communicate effectively the SBAR technique on patient safety in the hospital. The study used cross-sectional design. Subjects were 225 nurses that they worked at medical surgical ward of 2 hospitals in East Java, selected using cluster sampling technique in July 2019. Independent variable was effective communication-SBAR (Situation, Background, Assessment, Recommendation) technique and dependent variable was patients safety goals. Ordinal regression test was used to analyze the influence of effective communication-SBAR on patient safety goals. The Most of the nurses had received training in effective communication and patient safety. The majority of nurses had good skills on SBAR-based effective communication, but more than half of nurses had low patient safety goals. The conclusion is: effective communication of SBAR has no significant effect on patient safety objectives. This is due to other factors that can affect the implementation of effective communication for patient safety. Keywords: effective communication; patient safety; hospital

Abstract

AbstractThe success of preventing sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) not only depends on a well-organised collaboration among government, health professionals and NGOs but also active participation of group with high risk, including commercial sex workers (CSWs), on the transfer of STDs. Involving this high risk group is crucial on preventing STDs transmission. Determining the effectiveness of Group Therapy Model (GTM) through an intensive problem solving group on promoting healthy sexual behavior was the intention of this study. The variables are knowledge, attitude and practice STDs. It is a pre-experimental study using Pretest-Post test type design. The samples involving 20 CSWs devided into two groups of 10 CSWs for each. Each group was intervened three times with GTM on the same subject. Statistical analysis using paired t-test, conclusion of accepting the research hypothesis. There is significant difference of knowledge, attitude and practices on STDs before and after the implementation of GTM among the CSWs. It is, therefore, adviced to consider GTM on preventing the transmission of STDs among high-risk groups.

Abstract

Introduction: Weakness among stroke patients causes obstacles when fulfilling their activities in daily living (ADL). This condition also has an impact on the caregivers who provide daily care at home. The purpose of this study was to analyze the effect of independent ADL among the stroke patients on caregiver burden. Methods: The study used an analytical design through a cross-sectional approach. The variables included independent ADL and caregiver burden. A sample of 120 caregivers was taken from 2 community health centers in Surabaya through simple random sampling. The instruments used were Zarit Burden's Interview Schedule and the Katz Index of Independent for ADL. Regression ordinal was used to analyze the influence of independent ADL among stroke patients on caregiver burden. Results: The results showed that the caregiver who take care of stroke patients with severe functional impairment will feel burdened 3 times more than no burden. Post-stroke care at home through a rehabilitation program plays an important role in improving the condition of patients and their families at home, especially the caregivers. Conclusion: Nurses in a community health center through the family health care pathway provide comprehensive bio-psycho-socio-spiritual care in the rehabilitation period as expected. They are expected to improve and maintain the fulfillment of human needs comprehensively for stroke patients and their caregivers, so the quality of life of stroke patients, caregivers and their families remains optimal.

Abstract

The majority of stroke clients experience sequelae that can cause stress in the home care process, both for stroke patients and their families as caregivers. As a result, social support involving cadres for families with stroke patients is necessary. The service activity aims to increase the knowledge of health cadres about social support for stroke patients and implement social support for stroke patients and their families. The implementation method was through two stages. The first stage was the training of health cadres in Gedangan District with 70 cadres from 15 villages, while stage 2 was empowering health cadres in the community. Each cadre provides social support for families/stroke patients according to where the cadres live. Each cadre was provided with a questionnaire, and the data were analyzed descriptively. The activity results stated that all cadres found that stroke patients and their families experienced stress due to the illness, agreed that stroke patients and their families needed attention, and citizens needed to be prepared if someone had a stroke. In addition, the knowledge of health cadres increases, and cadres are happy with the social support program for stroke patients and their families. The visited stroke patients were happy because they received attention and support. In the long run, this program can be continued in every village by empowering health cadres as agents of reform in the health sector.

Abstract

The number of Islamic boarding schools is increasing rapidly, leading to potential health problems, particularly emergency-related issues. This community service aims to improve the students’ health by preventing daily emergencies through the formation of a Healthy Santri Cadre. The benefits of this activity include improving the students’ health and preventing daily emergencies in the Islamic boarding school environment. This community service activity was held in collaboration with LAZ-Sidogiri during the COVID-19 pandemic, when the Sidogiri Islamic boarding school was in lockdown. The activity was divided into three stages: assessment, training of healthy santri cadres, and peer group training through healthy santri cadres. LAZ-Sidogiri staff trained 30 healthy santri cadres. The results of the study showed that all students had experienced emergency situations, with the most common being fever, falls, and cuts from sharp objects. The level of knowledge of the Healthy Santri Cadre before and after the training was statistically significant (p<0.05). The establishment of a Healthy Santri Cadre is essential in Islamic boarding schools as a means of preventing daily emergencies and increasing students’ ability to provide correct first aid.
