This study focuses on the use of isrā’īlīyāt narratives in three pesantren-related Qur’anic exegesis in Indonesia. There have been many recent studies to explore the use of isrā'īlīyāt in exegesis, but the analysis on the use of isrā'īlīyāt narratives, its underlying factors, and its impact on exegesis has not been widely discussed. By limiting to examining the use of isrā'īlīyāt narratives in the stories of Jālūt and Ṭālūt, this study revealed a shift in the use of isrāīlīyāt from the validity aspect to the functional aspect. It also disclosed two functions of isrā'īlīyāt: the descriptive and medical functions. The descriptive function represents the moral content in the story of the Qur'an, which has an impact on the purpose of mentioning stories in the Qur’an as i'tibār (something to learning). The medical function, refers to the internal tendency of the interpreter to choose the story, and this function determines the pattern in the exegesis of narrative verses. The exegesis pattern in methodological studies is directed only at verses with legal and theological nuances, by excluding narrative verses.

The identification of the meaning of nafs wāḥidah, as produced by various interpretations through Adam, is claimed to be a biased interpretation mechanism based on certain orientations. This research aims to uncover the interpreters' orientation towards the text by situating the interpretation process as the interpreter's interaction with the text within a specific communication context. To achieve this objective, a qualitative method is employed in this research, utilizing a reception frame introduced by Wolfgang Iser. This study reveals that the interpreter's orientation towards specific meanings is constrained by the linguistic structure of the Qur'an, which has been schematized. This constraint on the interpreter's orientation occurs when seeking the contextual significance of the verse through syntagmatic and paradigmatic interconnections. The interpreter's relationship with the Qur'an within a specific communication context limits and shapes tendencies in the interpretation process, which is text-driven. In this context, the interpretation of the term nafs wāḥidah, in its various forms, does not exhibit any discernible biases towards producing meanings in alignment with the interpreter's preferences. Instead, the interpreter solely seeks contextual clues within the verse's structure, thereby associating the meaning of nafs wāḥidah with other terms in an interconnected context.

AbstractThe concept of piety as portrayed in the Qur'an, centered around the fear of divine consequences, lacks relevance within the context of da'wah. This study seeks to reevaluate the understanding of piety's significance. Employing a qualitative approach with content analysis, the research discerns that the term ittaqū, used in Qur'anic verses, addresses ethical, legal, and theological dimensions. This term serves as a directive for behavior to shield against divine retribution. The variation in themes mirrors the stages of the Prophet's da'wah, with discernible shifts between the periods of Makkah and Medina. This suggests an evolution in how protective measures and threats are articulated, underscoring the necessity of actions safeguarding humanity. Konsepsi takwa yang menjadi pusat pembahasan dalam al-Qur’an dengan identitas ketakutan terhadap ancaman tidak menemukan relevansinya dalam konteks dakwah. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk melihat kembali konsepsi makna takwa. Untuk mencapai tujuan tersebut, penelitian ini menggunakan metode kualitatif dengan content analysis sebagai teknik analisisnya. Penelitian ini berkesimpulan bahwa diksi ittaqū digunakan pada ayat-ayat yang menjelaskan persoalan etika, hukum, dan teologis. Keberadaan tema berfungsi sebagai identitas tindakan yang digunakan untuk melindungi diri dari beragam ancaman Tuhan. Keragaman tema berkorelasi dengan tahapan dakwah Nabi. Klaim ini dibuktukan dengan perubahan tema terklasifikasi berbeda di masa dakwah Makkah dan Madinah. Hal ini menunjukkan pergeseran makna takwa tidak berlangsung dalam aspek terminologinya, akan tetapi berlangsung pada cara perlindungan dan ancaman yang dihadirkan untuk menekankan pelaksanaan tindakan yang menjadi pelindung manusia.

Acculturation between tafseer and tradition in Indonesia, like an aculturation between Islam and culture. The process of acculturation is successful. The dialogue between tradition and tafseer makes both of them not deny each other. However, the study about that, just strengthening the evidence from the results of the analysis about the products of interpretation. As a result, the study about interpretation in Indonesia become a repetitive study and only focuses on interpretation products. The development of an acculturative method that has proven successful, is more essential to provide new methods for interpretation in Indonesia. On these problems, this study aims to find the concept of acculturation in interpretations in Indonesia which makes classical interpretations as a reference. This research uses qualitative methods with literature study techniques. As a tool in analyzing data, this study also uses historical analysis with the approach of al-thâbit wa al-mutaḥawwil and hermeneutics. The study found that the usage of classical interpretation is only used to find the moral ideal of a verse, which is then modified and interpreted according to the Javanese world view of the complex world. The progress of contemporary knowledge has implications for the formulation of Islamic studies in general, including the examination of the Qur'an. Scholars at UIN Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta are redefining the approach to studying the Qur'an in a more modern direction to foster synergy and dialogue with established practices. The objective of this research is to uncover patterns and mechanisms for advancing Qur'anic studies at UIN Sunan Kalijaga by effectively integrating scientific methods and the teachings of the Qur'an. In order to accomplish this, the research employs a qualitative methodology and utilizes a systematic literature review as an analytical technique. The study reveals a developmental pattern in Qur'anic studies at UIN Sunan Kalijaga that commenced with a shift in perspective from a traditional emphasis on religious texts (ulūm ad-din) to critical investigations (dirāsāt islamīyah) based on empirical observations. Consequently, a fresh and contemporary model of Qur'anic studies has emerged. However, the application of these novel concepts encounters challenges, particularly in student research, where passivity impedes active involvement in the advancement of Qur'anic studies.

Technological developments in the media are used by speakers to expand the range of meaning of the Qur'an rhetorically. Meaning is presented interactively to provide an effective impact of understanding by involving persuasive tools in explanatory rhetoric. This study aims to show Adi Hidayat's persuasive mechanism on the Adi Hidayat Official YouTube Channel as the new face of Qur'an interpretation on social media. To achieve this goal, this study uses qualitative methods with content analysis as an analytical tool. The emphasis on the persuasive model in Hidayat's interpretation was identified using the rhetorical approach initiated by Aristotle. This study concluded that the effectiveness of Hidayat's expression was influenced by his appearance as a credible and authoritative figure in the meaning of the Qur'an. This method is strengthened by the selection of arguments to emphasize and strengthen the meaning given properly and legitimately. Meanwhile, the emphasis on a meaning related to law, ethics, and theology utilizes the emotions of the listener with its various functions and goals. The use of various aspects of meaning has an impact on the effectiveness of interpretation on social media dynamically and adaptively.

Cakupan pemaknaan Alquran di Instagram mengalami perkembangan bentuk dari deskripsi makna dalam bentuk meme ke bentuk Quran journaling. Makna dieksplorasi lebih dekat dengan pengalaman keseharian yang sifatnya pribadi dengan mekanisme reflektif yang dihiasi dengan beragam gambar yang melengkapi keindahannya. Makna tersimpan dalam rangkaian simbol yang kompleks sebagai sarana merepresentasikan kandungan ayat sehingga terjadi perubahan tangkapan makna dari yang dituju oleh pemilik akun ke pembaca. Penelitian ini bertujuan mendeteksi kesenjangan makna yang berlangsung dalam proses encoding dan decoding dengan menggunakan metode kualitatif. Hasil data dianalisis dengan metode structural analysis. Penelitian ini menunjukkan penerimaan pesan dalam bentuk Quran journaling muncul dalam bentuk yang tidak konsisten. Produksi pesan yang bertujuan memberikan pemahaman terhadap makna Alquran agar menjadi petunjuk diterima dalam makna yang beragam. Rangkaian kode bahasa yang digunakan sebagai deskripsi pesan teralihkan dengan simbol hiasan dan seni tulisan yang ditonjolkan dalam mekanisme Quran journaling. Pembaca yang menyukai bentuk jurnal memilih memahami pesan dalam bentuk keinginan memproduksi tulisan dan hiasan indah yang sama tanpa memperhatikan kandungan makna Alquran. Meskipun sebagian kecil dari penerima pesan memberikan dukungan atas makna, penerimaan atas narasi kandungan Alquran berlangsung hanya pada makna yang disukai. Hal ini menunjukkan inefisiensi pemaknaan di Instagram yang disebabkan tangkapan makna didasarkan pada kesukaan dan keinginan pembaca atas makna yang dikehendaki.

The practice of polygamy, which is debated among women, is accepted by Wahdah Islamiyah Muslim women as an embodiment of religious teachings enshrined in the hadith. This acceptance does not negate the complexities and contradictions inherent in the hadith that discuss the practice. This study explores the reading position of Wahdah Islamiyah Muslim women in understanding and practicing the hadith of polygamy. Using qualitative methods, data were collected through in-depth interviews with 12 persons consisting of 5 first wives, 5 second wives, 1 da’īyah (preacher), and 1 head of the Wahdah Islamiyah Muslim women. In-depth observations were also made of key informant activities. The data were analyzed using a fiqh (Islamic Jurisprudence) analysis model combined with the framework of Stuart Hall's reception theory. The findings of this study reveal three different reading positions: 1) The hegemonic reading model using the argument of belief in an authoritative text. 2) the negotiated reading model emphasizing the fulfillment of the husband's needs driven by concerns about the husband's compliance with the principles of justice. 3) the oppositional reading model rooted in the vulnerability of wives who challenge of ensuring fair treatment. These three positions emerge from the structure of the hadith discourse where the textual affirmation of polygamy serves as the basis for its resolution. The incorporation of settlement in an interpretive and counterintuitive perspective in the development of fiqh signifies a full acceptance of the law while also considering the goals of responsible individuals (maqāṣid al-mukallafīn).

This study aims to discern the arrangement patterns of ornaments that give illumination a distinctive character in the Qur’anic manuscript in Madura. Employing a qualitative method and utilizing a history of the idea analysis process, this research reveals a significant correlation between the ornamental features in the Qur’anic manuscripts and the carving art patterns that flourished in Madura during the 19th century. The per-samper structure as an edge decoration, onggelan in the creation of floral motifs, and the incorporation of chakra motifs on the koseko (corner) attest to the representation of a unique carving culture inherent in Madurese art, as manifested in the illuminated Qur’anic manuscript. The illustrator forms simple patterns and image structures by omitting detailed ornaments. The simple shapes and patterns are identified as the impact of the abstraction model of art products through imitation. Nevertheless, the dominant aspect that shows a distinctive artistic tendency in the Madurese tradition is represented in the use of colors that are characteristic of Madurese color selection in their art products.

The function of the ḥāshiyah (gloss), traditionally serving as an explanatory tool for words requiring further exploration, underwent a transformation in its application by kiai (local religious leader) in the pesantren (Islamic boarding school) of Madura. This shift arose from the need to actualize meanings and reinforce worship practices rooted in the Shāfi‘ī school of jurisprudence (madhhab). The emphasis on the Shāfi‘ī school was driven by the religious dynamics of 19th-century Madurese society, which leaned heavily toward mystical practices and tarekat (spiritual path) traditions. This study aims to identify the scribal process and glosses in the fiqh (Islamic jurisprudence) literature of Madurese pesantren and their connection to efforts to shape a new religious practice among Madurese people. A qualitative method, informed by social construction theory, was employed to guide the analysis of the data. This study found that the preferences and choices of specific Shāfi‘ī jurisprudence literature closely align with the literature commonly used in pesantren throughout Indonesia. This shared selection reflects the recognition of Madurese kiai and become an objective reality widely accepted as standard educational material in pesantren. In response to this objective reality, Madurese kiai incorporated additional explanations that not only elucidate meanings but also address questions about the religious practices of the Madurese people, which often gravitated towards tarekat connections and mystical traditions. These commentaries extend beyond simple linguistic clarification, challenging Islamic behaviors that deviate from fiqh logic. They serve as a transformative force within the Islamic tradition, facilitating the emergence of new religious practices and reinforcing the evolving function of commentary as a means of shaping and influencing religious behavior. [Peralihan fungsi ḥāshiyah, sebagai komponen penjelas kata-kata yang membutuhkan eksplanasi, mengalami pergeseran dalam proses produksinya oleh para kiai pesantren di Madura. Peralihan ini didasarkan pada kebutuhan aktualisasi makna untuk menguatkan praktik ibadah yang berdasarkan fikih mazhab Shāfi‘ī. Kebutuhan penekanan atas mazhab Shāfi‘ī didasarkan pada dinamika keagamaan masyarakat Madura abad ke-19 Masehi yang cenderung bertendensi pada praktik mistis dan pengamalan tarekat. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menemukan proses dialektis antara kiai yang berdialektika dengan literatur fikih yang menjadi teks sumber dengan realitas sosial-keagamaan dalam proses pembentukan struktur dan tindakan hukum masyarakat Madura. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode kualitatif dengan alat analisis teori konstruksi sosial untuk menangkap proses penyalinan dan komentar yang berlangsung di dua pesantren tua di Madura. Penelitian ini menemukan bahwa teks-teks sumber yang disalin memiliki keidentikan dengan teks-teks yang dipelajari oleh pesantren-pesantren di wilayah Indonesia pada umumnya dengan tendensi kecenderungan penuh terhadap mazhab Shāfi‘ī. Struktur identik dalam pemilihan literatur menunjukkan literatur mazhab Shāfi‘ī sebagai realitas objektif yang diterima oleh seluruh pesantren sebagai bahan pengajaran. Meskipun literatur tersebut merupakan kesepakatan umum, para kiai memberikan respons makna yang bersifat subjektif dengan membawa seperangkat pengetahuan kognitif melalui penjelasan atas kosa-kata tertentu dengan mengambil teks-teks lain yang tidak ditemukan salinan materialnya. Penjelasan atas konsep kata tidak hanya berorientasi pada pemahaman makna, akan tetapi memuat refleksi kegelisahan terhadap realitas keagamaan masyarakat Madura yang cenderung berafiliasi dengan tarekat dan praktik-praktik mistik lainnya. Kritik atas tindakan keagamaan yang tidak sesuai dengan nalar fikih menunjukkan perluasan fungsi dari komentar dalam tradisi Islam sebagai komponen pembentukan tindakan keagamaan baru.]
