Abstract

This paper aims to describe the position of mainstream audio-visual media which has been replaced by a digital platform, Youtube. YouTube has produced some famous people who have been 'untouched' by the mainstream media. The author obtained data and information from YouTube channels, literature and online news. In analyzing this phenomenon, the author uses three concepts: power, the democratization of information, and social media. The author concludes that this platform provides space for anyone to express and get advantages from democratizing information and entertainment. The control of information and entertainment is no longer in the hands of big media corporations but belongs to people like Andovi Da Lopez, Nessie Judge, Hansol, Budi “Epenkah Cupentoh” or even Jeromee who had never appeared on TV screens before.

Abstract

Social media content has taken up a lot of our attention, a lot of time and energy is spent either creating content or just exploring it. This of course does not only have a positive impact on us, on the other side of the pendulum there are 'mines' ready to blow up anyone who is not aware of the negative effects. This paper attempts to provide an overview of the hidden agendas of social media that are consciously or unconsciously realized by its users, where the hedonic treadmill concept is used as the main analysis knife. This article is qualitative by using impressions on YouTube as the object of writing. Shows that are used as the object of analysis include: 1) Why Social Media Is Toxic for Teen Mental Health | Fault Lines Documentary; 2) Teens, Social Media, and Technology (Full Documentary; 3) The Instagram Effect 2022 Documentary. The author finds that social media has great potential to encourage a continuous search for happiness as evidenced by the acquisition of as many like-view-shares as possible. In addition, the next finding is that social media makes a major contribution to the formation of a negative image of the body and mental disorders that lead to suicide. The ultimate terminal is the utilization of algorithms to generate more profit for social media.

Abstract

General Background: Local elections in Indonesia frequently trigger polarization, damaged social relations, and prolonged distrust within communities. Specific Background: In Tallung Ura Village, Enrekang Regency, the 2024 election created social fragmentation, emotional tension, and disrupted daily interactions among residents. Knowledge Gap: Limited research addresses reconciliation models that apply communication strategies integrating religious values and local cultural wisdom in rural settings. Aims: This study analyzes the roles of communicators, communication mechanisms, and strategies that support post-election reconciliation. Using a qualitative case study, data were obtained through observation, interviews, and documentation with religious leaders, village authorities, and community actors. Results: Reveal that local communicators acted as mediators delivering persuasive, empathetic messages; open dialogue and personal mediation reduced tensions; and strategies grounded in Islamic teachings and cultural values such as sipakatau, sipakalebbi, and sipakainge rebuilt trust and social cohesion. Novelty: Lies in presenting a reconciliatory communication model based on spiritual guidance, cultural identity, and participatory mechanisms unique to Tallung Ura and rarely examined in political reconciliation literature. Implications: Indicate that strengthening mediator capacity and establishing communication forums may provide a transferable framework for restoring grassroots harmony and preventing recurring conflict in similar post-election contexts. Highlights • Mediators used persuasive and empathetic communication to reduce tensions.• Religious principles and cultural values supported sustainable reconciliation.• Structured dialogue forums restored trust and rebuilt social cohesion. Abstract

Since the mid-2010s, Indonesia has implemented a strict prohibition on the importation of second-hand clothing with the stated objectives of protecting domestic industries, safeguarding public health, and ensuring trade compliance. The aim of this study is to investigate the persistence of urban thrift markets in Makassar despite this prohibition and to examine the dynamics that shape the policy practice gap. Adopting a qualitative research design, the study draws on semi structured interviews, direct observations, and documentary analysis involving municipal officials, traders, and consumers. The findings reveal that enforcement at the local level is undermined by limited institutional capacity, corruption, and socioeconomic pressures. Despite repeated enforcement actions, informal thrift markets demonstrate structural adaptability, strong community networks, and rational strategies that sustain operations. Consumers are driven by affordability, cultural identity, and sustainability values, while traders rely on rational cost benefit calculations and social legitimacy to mitigate risks. These insights highlight that prohibition alone cannot dismantle practices deeply rooted in economic necessity and cultural consumption. The study contributes to urban political economy scholarship by integrating policy implementation theory with rational choice analysis to explain why regulatory outcomes diverge from intentions. The findings imply that effective governance of informal markets requires adaptive strategies that combine regulation, empowerment, and social protection, rather than coercive prohibition.
