Abstract

Abstract Anopheles is an eminent mosquito vector responsible for Plasmodium infection in human. By far, 430 anophelines have been identified but only 30-40 species have the potential to transmit malaria. A survey was carried to describe the distribution of anophelines species in seven community health centre (CHC) working areas including Caile, Ujung Loe, Bonto Bahari, Bonto Tiro, Batang, Bonto Bangun and Tanete in Bulukumba District, South Sulawesi. Human Landing Collection, Net Trap, and Light Trap was applied to collect adult anophelines mosquitoes. The Anopheles malaria vectors were observed in all areas. Various anophelines malaria vectors exist in Bulukumba District, including An. subpictus, An. barbirostris, An. hyrcanus, An. vagus, An. indefinitus, An. parangensis and An. kochi. Of which, Anopheles subpictus was the most abundant species and the majority of Anopheles mosquitoes were found in Ujung Loe area. Our study indicates that community-based programs and routine entomological surveillance, especially in high-risk areas, should be implemented to effectively control malaria transmission in Bulukumba District. Hasil penelitian menggambarkan distribusi vektor Anopheles yang tersebar di tujuh wilayah kerja puskesmas yakni An. subpictus, An. barbirostris, An. hyrcanus, An. vagus, An. indefinitus, An. parangensis dan An. kochi.

Abstract

Abstract Dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF) and malaria are diseases that are spread through vector (Vector Borne Disease), which can be prevented by applying larvacides. One of plant showing function as a natural larvacide is fragrant pandan leaves (Pandanus amaryllifolius). The chemical contents in fragrant pandan leaves are polyphenols, flavonoids, saponins, tannin, and alkaloids. This study aimed to recognize the effectiveness of fragrant pandan extract (P. amaryllifolius) in killing the larvae of Aedes sp. and Anopheles. This was experimental research, posttest only with control group design. The study population was Aedes sp. and Anopheles larvae (Instar III-IV) taken from the original habitat, then the sample was determined by purposive sampling method. The results revealed that the most effective concentration of fragrant pandan extract (P. amaryllifolius) in killing the larvae of Aedes sp. and Anopheles was 15%. Probit test results of Lethal Concentration 50% and 90% fragrant pandan extract for 24 hours to Aedes sp. larvae showed 9.445% and 14.087%, while to Anopheles larvae depicted 14.874% and 31.468%. It is expected to be guided to community in applying fragrant pandan extract as an alternative larvacide in everyday life to control vector diseases, particularly dengue hemorrhagic fever and malaria. Abstract

School environmental health is a condition of the school environment that can support the optimal growth and development of students in healthy living behavior and avoid negative influences. Clean and healthy living behavior at school is a set of behaviors practiced by students, teachers, and the school community based on awareness as a result of learning so that they can independently prevent disease, improve their health, and play an active role in creating a healthy environment. Objective to describe an understanding of the health of the school environment and clean and healthy living behavior. This research is a descriptive survey with a population of 104 students from grades 4, 5, and 6 of SDN Kunciok. The sampling technique used the total sampling method, and the research instrument used a questionnaire distributed to each respondent. The characteristics of student respondents based on the variable understanding of environmental health were in the poor category as many as 56 people (53.8%). In comparison, in the good category, there were 48 people (46.2%). Based on the PHBS variable, there were 53 people in the poor category (51.0%), while in the good category there were 51 people (49.0%). The majority of students have a poor understanding of the health of the school environment and clean and healthy living behavior. It is recommended that students who behave well must be able to maintain it, by not throwing rubbish carelessly, eradicating mosquitoes, using healthy latrines, and exercising regularly and in a measured manner, and for students who behave badly, they must be able to improve further to prevent environmental pollution that potentially cause disease.

Abstract

COVID-19 has posed significant global health threats, with responses varying across populations due to differences in risk perception, behaviour, and biological vulnerability. In Indonesia, most research has focused on urban settings, with limited attention paid to rural or remote communities. This study assesses COVID-19- risks related—specifically behavioural and immunity-related-factors—in the remote area of both Bontoramba Subdistrict, Jeneponto Regency. A cross-sectional study was conducted using cluster random sampling across eight villages, with 183 participants selected from a total of 12,242 households. Data were collected between November to December 2020 using a validated structured questionnaire, administered both online and face-to-face interviews. The instrument assessed sociodemographic characteristics, in-home and out-of-home risk behaviours, and indicators of body resistance. Statistical analysis was performed using Chi-square tests to examine associations between demographic factors and risk-related behaviours. The majority of respondents were aged 30–39 years (62.3%) and employed in the private sector (62.8%). Key findings revealed high levels of moderate risk behaviour, particularly related to outdoor activity (80.9%) and public transport use (92.9%). Significant associations were found between gender, age, education, and occupation with various risk behaviours and body resistance indicators (p<0.05). Females generally practiced better in-home preventive behaviours, while males were more likely to engage in out-of-home risk behaviours. Younger individuals exhibited higher mobility and lower body resistance, while older respondents showed greater compliance with protective behaviours. Education and occupation also influenced risk patterns negatively. This study highlights the importance of considering sociodemographic contexts when designing public health interventions. Remote populations such as those in Bontoramba, face unique vulnerabilities due to behavioural exposure and limited physiological resilience. These findings underscore the need for targeted, context-specific health promotion strategies in similar rural settings.
