The method used is qualitative descriptive with sample data from 188 families. The results showed that 90% of poor villagers are categorized as working-age and 100% of people are working in the informal sector. Survival strategies they use include: make loans to some traders, including coconut, nutmeg, cloves and cocoa traders, sell sopi and become laborers in the city. When it rains, they shift from rice farming activity to planting cassava and taro and this effort helps them survive.

Abstract

With a qualitative approach, this study intends to describe in depth the socio-cultural background and challenges of agriculture in Southwest Sumba Regency (SBD) which cause the problem of high levels of poverty in the area despite having a wealth of great agricultural potential. This research found that the world of SBD agriculture faces challenges in the form of a high level of agricultural vulnerability and not optimal management of agricultural potential. These two challenges are difficult to overcome due to the lack of farming capital caused by debt bondage due to high-cost customary practices and the characteristics of subsistence farmers. On the other hand, the trade-oriented model of commercial farming of SBD while not leaving cultural values and local knowledge has been proven to be able to overcome the challenges of agricultural vulnerability and not optimal management of SBD agricultural potential.

Abstract

ABSTRACT This study aims to analyze the economic opportunities and challenges faced by families living along the Indonesia–Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste (RDTL) border, particularly at points of cross-border smuggling and black-market trade. The research employs a qualitative case study approach, with data collected through in-depth interviews involving informants familiar with the economic and social dynamics of the border region. The findings reveal that the persistence of illegal trade reflects the government’s inability to ensure adequate welfare and economic access for border communities. Restrictive regulations have limited local economic activity, prompting many families to engage in clandestine trade as a survival strategy. This study contributes theoretically by interpreting informal border economies as both adaptive mechanisms and acts of resistance against unfavorable state policies. The findings offer valuable insights for developing more inclusive and context-sensitive economic policies in border areas.

Abstract

Background: The prevalence of stunting in Indonesia is still higher than the WHO maximum standard of 20 percent. East Nusa Tenggara is one of the Provinces in Indonesia that is still struggling with a high prevalence of stunting. The purpose of this study was to examine the incidence of stunting caused by socio-cultural factors related to pregnancy outside legal marriage in rural Timor, East Nusa Tenggara. Design and research method: A descriptive qualitative method along with a health anthropological approach were used to answer research questions. The cases being studied were the family of stunted toddlers under five years of age and their families with poor nutritional status. The initial survey was conducted on 108 stunted malnourished toddlers using a purposive sampling technique, 16 families with stunted children were selected for observation. Family activities were observed to learn about lifestyle, care of pregnant women, diet, and parenting patterns, as well as traditions carried out. In-depth interviews were conducted with the parents and grandparents of stunted children, the village head, village health workers, public figures, religious leaders, and traditional birth attendants in the study area. Results: Study results indicate that pregnancy outside of marriage occurs with couples without physical, mental, and financial readiness. It is also more common in people living in remote areas with traditional lifestyles who have low education and little knowledge and experience about health, pregnancy, and childcare. They are economically disadvantaged, including prospective fathers without a job and steady income. Conclusion and recommendation: Pregnancy outside legal marriage is one of the root causes that strongly influence social problems with an impact on the high incidence of stunting as well as malnutrition in rural Timor. To prevent and solve stunting problems, efforts are needed to overcome socio-cultural related stunting problems in rural Timor.
