Abstract

This study examines how Indonesian audiences respond to LGBTQ+ narratives in Netflix series such as Feel Good (2020), Heartstopper (2022), and Glamorous (2023) through Stuart Hall's Audience Reception Theory. Employing a qualitative approach with 29 participants, it explores how these series influence viewers' knowledge, and awareness, particularly in relation to cultural and societal norms. The findings indicate that these narratives contribute to audience understanding across five key areas: LGBTQ+ identity and experiences, cultural and societal insights, moral lessons, challenges faced by LGBTQ+ individuals, and critical perspectives on representation. Additionally, the study identifies four distinct awareness categories: recognizing LGBTQ+ individuals as human beings, understanding their experiences, acknowledging diverse gender identities, and recognizing the media’s role in shaping perceptions. These results suggest that exposure to LGBTQ+ content in streaming media can promote empathy, broaden perspectives, and challenge existing biases. By highlighting the informative and awareness-raising potential of these series, the study underscores the role of media in shaping public discourse and social attitudes toward gender and sexuality, ultimately contributing to a growing recognition of diverse identities within Indonesian society.

Abstract

The aim of this research is to find out the self-compassion depicted in Paperweight novel to overcome Stevie's bulimia nervosa. Paperweight by Meg Haston is a novel containing psychological issue related to eating disorder, bulimia nervosa, in Stevie as the main character. Stevie, who initially had suicidal thoughts because she felt neglected by her family and friends, eventually realized to recover from bulimia nervosa. Stevie’s realization to recover from bulimia is related with self-compassion because it is a component that reduces negative thoughts in someone with mental illness including bulimia nervosa. Then, in order to solve the problem, self-compassion theory by Neff (self-kindness, common humanity, mindfulness) is employed in this research. This research is qualitative research which was done subsequently by reading and rereading the novel, eliminating, identifying, and grouping, interpreting, describing, and analysing the data. In this research, the researchers found that Stevie possessed self-kindness to do treatment and she started doing fun things. Then, common humanity is found when Stevie realizes in this world every individual has his/her own problems. It is indicated that Stevie possessed mindfulness when she chose to leave an unpleasant memory and remember the pleasant one. As a result, self-compassion helps Stevie to recover from bulimia nervosa.

Abstract

Gender issues are not unfamiliar around Indonesian people. However, it does not mean that everyone in Indonesia understands the issues. For this problem, an understanding about gender issues is needed and the target of this community service program is students of SMAN 5 Purwokerto.  The SMAN 5 Purwokerto students are the target for this activity as the method that is used for this community service is photovoice, a literacy method that uses photo and caption which are suitable for their age. This community service aims at raising understanding and awareness about gender issues to the young generation to prevent gender discrepancy. By giving materials about gender issues, writing captions, photography training, and mentoring, the result of this program is the SMAN 5 Purwokerto students' understanding  regarding gender issues. This result is proven by their answers on pretest and post-test which were given before and after the program. The pretest results showed that there were some students who did not understand the terms and descriptions related to gender issues (20%), while the post-test results showed that all students could provide and explain photovoice with gender issues (100%). This shows that the photovoice activity was successful in improving students' understanding of gender issues.

Abstract

The young protagonist Shorts in Ray Bradbury's The Night is the subject of this study, which explores the concept of thanatophobia, or the fear of death. The research analyzes Shorts' experiences with death, including the death of his sister and grandfather, as well as the metaphorical contact with mortality in the ravine, using a qualitative descriptive approach. The data suggest that Shorts interprets death differently at each level, reflecting his developmental understanding and emotional responses. The study emphasizes how environmental triggers, developmental cognitive stages, and familial bonds influence his fear and coping mechanisms. These revelations highlight how crucial open communication and supportive caregiving are in assisting kids in grieving and building resilience. This study provides a greater knowledge of mortality dread in fictional and real-life circumstances by bridging the gap between literary analysis and psychological viewpoints.

Abstract

The implications of the pandemic have drastically decreased tourism occupancy in Indonesia, prompting the president to develop super priority destinations, such as Mandalika and Likupang, to restore tourism occupancy. Focusing on Mandalika and Likupang, located in special economic zones, this research aims to critically analyze the social media narratives to uncover the power relations and socio-political constructs embedded in the social media accounts of both destinations. We applied descriptive qualitative research, elaborating the textual elements, discursive, and sociocultural practices of promotional media. The result of the textual elements analysis shows that social media posts mostly use simple sentences, and a deeper lexical analysis reveals that various types of pronouns, adjectives, and collocations are embedded in the posts. Social media leverages persuasive descriptive discourse with friendly, descriptive, and emotional words, improving reader accessibility. Political and cultural narratives also play a significant role in shaping the tourism discourse. Branded as the “New Bali,” Mandalika and Likupang can displace and exclude local culture through social media posts, showing the power of social media in creating tourism discourse. Conclusively, critical discourse analysis helps in understanding the relation between the discourse and the social aspect by analyzing language within a social context.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the meaning of happiness in the short movie “Happiness” by Steve Cutts. In interpreting the happiness, this study uses Saussure’s Semiotics theory. This study employed a qualitative method. The discussion of this study is divided into billboards, food and beverages billboards/brochures, fashion billboards and brochures, and medicines billboards. The results of this study indicated that happiness because of alcohol, food, beverages, fashion, and drugs are temporary. The effect of happiness that is obtained is instant, where happiness is easy to get but also easy to lose, it will not last long. From the results of this study, it can be understood that the meaning of happiness in real life and even in the short movie “Happiness” cannot be taken lightly since being happiness is something that we feel rather than what we think.
