Abstract

This study discusses two faces of Islam regarding its relationship with the state, namely cultural Islam and political Islam. Cultual Islam believes that to spread Islamic values does not have to take power, but can also pay attention to the grassroots, by preaching to the community, establishing educational, health and economic institutions. Whereas cultural Islam is more power-oriented, they believe that with that power it can be easy to apply Islamic teachings, and some even want to change the shape of the country into an Islamic state. Some political Islamists participate in parties, and some are non-parties. Usually, those who are non-party are more likely to be radical. Both have advantages and disadvantages, what is clear is that cultural Islam is more humane and has an impression on society.

Abstract

Abstract

This study is motivated by the decline of moral and spiritual authority in  modern Islamic da’wah, which tends to be pragmatic and rhetorical. The research  aims to analyze the sanad-based da’wah method practiced by K.H. Muhammad  Arwani Amin Sa’id at Yanbu‘ul Qur’an Islamic Boarding School in Kudus as a  model emphasizing the continuity between knowledge (‘ilm), ethics (adab), and  practice (‘amal). Using a qualitative approach through library research, this study  examines Arwani’s works, biography, and teaching tradition. The findings reveal  that sanad in Arwani’s da’wah functions as a system of value transmission  integrating intellectual, moral, and spiritual dimensions through talaqqi (direct  learning), mushafahah (face-to-face transmission), and exemplary conduct (uswah  hasanah). This approach unites sanad al-‘ilm, sanad al-adab, and sanad al-amal,  resulting in an authentic and transformative da’wah bil hal (preaching through  action). This study concludes that sanad da'wah is a relevant paradigm for  contemporary Islamic da'wah which is rooted in tradition but oriented towards  character formation. Its implication suggests that this model can be  recontextualized in education and digital da’wah to strengthen scholarly authority,  ethical integrity, and moderate Islamic leadership in the modern era.

Abstract

This article explores the revitalization of Islamic educational institutions in the context of transitioning from tradition to transformation in the global era. The main focus is on the urgency of institutional reform, the strategic role of Islamic education, and adaptive strategies that integrate Islamic values with modern demands. Using a qualitative approach based on literature review, the study examines fundamental concepts of Islamic education institutions, their types and roles, as well as current challenges, including resistance to innovation, managerial limitations, and human resource capacity. The findings reveal that revitalization is not merely a structural necessity but also a value-based imperative, requiring Islamic institutions to act as agents of spiritual-based social transformation. The article proposes several key strategies, including institutional management reform, enhancement of educators’ competencies, and cross-sectoral collaboration. In conclusion, successful revitalization must be holistic and participatory to ensure that Islamic educational institutions remain relevant and competitive in shaping a future-oriented generation in the global landscape.

Abstract

Religiously-informed social leadership plays a crucial role in strengthening community solidarity, particularly amid identity crises, conflicts, or structural development challenges. This research analyzes the architecture of solidarity built by Sheikh Ahmad Yassin (1937-2004), the founder of Hamas, in Palestine, and adapts his conceptual strategies into the framework of Indonesian nationhood (Konsep Keindonesiaan). Although studies on Yassin often focus on the political and military dimensions of resistance, this analysis posits that his success lies in a unique and multidimensional strategy: the institutionalization of solidarity, which strategically filled humanitarian and social vacuums through the establishment of educational, welfare, and health institutions. Using a functional comparative and hermeneutic approach, key findings indicate that the pillars of Yassin’s movement, namely (1) moral leadership derived from physical weakness, (2) the institutionalization of social services as a political pre-condition, and (3) a multidimensional struggle ideology integrating spiritual and material aspects, hold significant functional relevance for the role of Islamic social organizations (Ormas Islam) in Indonesia. This conceptual adaptation transforms Yassin’s concept of Jihad of Resistance (against occupation and maintaining land as waqaf) into Jihad of Development within the Indonesian Context. Jihad of Development is understood as a collective, structured, and continuous effort by Ormas Islam to overcome the nation’s structural weaknesses (such as stunting and poverty), thereby strengthening social resilience and consolidating Indonesian religious nationalism based on the universal principle of kemaslahatan (public benefit).

Abstract

The digital era has significantly transformed the landscape of da’wah institutions, particularly in patterns of religious communication, institutional structures, and the construction of religious authority. These changes demand not only technical adaptation but also a philosophical and conceptual reconstruction of da’wah institutions within contemporary society. Employing a qualitative library research approach, this study analyzes relevant literature through content analysis and a critical-reflective perspective. The findings reveal a transition of da’wah institutions from normative and conventional models toward transformative, adaptive, and digitally integrated ecosystems. Ontologically, da’wah institutions function as agents of social transformation; epistemologically, they operate as integrative systems of knowledge; and axiologically, they serve as guardians of ethical and moral values in the digital sphere. The integration of Islamic values with digital innovation emerges as an essential foundation for sustaining institutional relevance, legitimacy, and credibility. Consequently, the reconstruction of the conceptual framework of da’wah institutions constitutes a strategic response to the challenges and opportunities presented by digital transformation.
