Abstract

This present study exposes how the patriarchal ideology still survives in the international English movie depicting Chinese women, Mulan (1998) and Mulan (2020). This present study uses critical discourse analysis to analyse the movies, focusing on the the dialogue, characteristics and events in the movies. This study contributes by critically comparing how English movies which are directed and scripted by English native speakers depict the role of women in the patriarchal China. The results showed that despite the 22-year gap between movies, the portrayal of women becomes worse, presented differently due to a change in genre, and is only seemingly improved at the tail end of the latest movie. While there are differences in how both Mulans are faced with problems and how they face said problems, her resistance as female neither reflects nor felt by Chinese women.

Abstract

Nowadays, internet use can be accessed easily by various groups, especially among high school/vocational school students. Apart from the positive impacts obtained by users, the negative impacts of exposure to students via the internet are also very large. Students are often exposed to fake news on various social media platforms because of their unwise use. Therefore, the service team carries out community service activities. This activity aims to improve students' ability to read, receive and criticize all types of news so that they can prevent the spread of false information through digital literacy knowledge. Participants in the activity were 27 class X students at SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Pekanbaru. The approach method used is learning and understanding by providing material regarding digital literacy, exercises in the form of questions and answers including pre-test, post-test and discussions. The pre-test results show that around 80% of students are aware of the importance of digital literacy in everyday life. After providing material and discussion, a significant increase in students' understanding and awareness was obtained through the post-test, namely 96%. By carrying out this activity, it is hoped that students will be able to sort out positive information, ignore news that is provocative and spreads hatred.

Abstract

This study explores women's roles in Aboriginal and Talang Mamak societies within their respective social and domestic contexts. It involves a comparative analysis of two literary texts, 'Alinta, The Flame' by Hyllus Maris and Sonia Borg, and 'Behuma' by Gunawan, representing the Aboriginal and Talang Mamak cultures, respectively. The primary focus of this research is to compare and analyze women's roles in these indigenous cultures while considering the social, cultural, and economic factors that influence their positions in both the public and domestic spheres. Additionally, it assesses the contributions of these literary works to our comprehension of the roles of women from Aboriginal and Talang Mamak cultures, particularly within the framework of their distinctions between public and domestic roles. This study adopts a descriptive-analytical approach, intending to provide a comprehensive account of the existing phenomena. In this context, it delineates the comparative roles of Aboriginal and Talang Mamak women as portrayed in 'Alinta, The Flame' and 'Behuma.' The findings suggest that Aboriginal society exhibits a greater degree of patriarchy than Talang Mamak society, as evidenced by the lower participation of Aboriginal women in the public sphere.

Abstract

This study examines the nuanced application of binary oppositions in Tenas Effendy's "Pantun Kelakar," a collection of Malay jesting couplets. Through rigorous qualitative analysis of selected pantuns, we explore how binary opposition functions as a sophisticated literary device to encapsulate complex cultural wisdom and philosophical concepts inherent in the Malay worldview. Our research reveals that Effendy's pantuns ingeniously employ contrasting perspectives to illuminate multifaceted aspects of Malay life, mainly focusing on marital dynamics and societal attitudes towards physical differences and disabilities. The study demonstrates how these pantuns serve not merely as entertainment but as powerful vehicles for cultural expression, moral instruction, and subtle social commentary. By juxtaposing opposing viewpoints on issues such as having a cleft-lipped wife, multiple spouses, a beautiful wife, a mute wife, or a disabled husband, the pantuns encourage critical reflection on societal norms and values. This research contributes to a deeper understanding of Malay literature and culture, showcasing how traditional poetic forms can be analyzed using modern literary theory to yield profound insights into cultural values and philosophical outlooks. Our findings highlight the pantun's vital role in preserving and transmitting cultural wisdom across generations while revealing the sophisticated literary techniques employed in Malay oral traditions.

Abstract

This study discusses the use of anthropomorphism in two episodes of Upin and Ipin entitled Aku Sebatang Pensel and Aku Sebuah Jam. Through observation and note-taking techniques, data were obtained to analyze how the two episodes humanize pencils and clocks. The results of the analysis show the presence of anthropomorphic elements in both episodes, including human characters, emotions, and human behavior given to pencils and clocks. The pencils in the episode Aku Sebatang Pensel behave like humans with the ability to speak, interact, and show emotions such as worry, anger, pride, sadness, and joy. Meanwhile, the clock characters in the episode Aku Sebuah Jam also show human behavior with the ability to speak, share experiences, show concern, and dance. Sad emotions are also displayed by the clock characters. The characteristics of pencil and clock characters include helpful, encouraging, caring, argumentative, passionate, optimistic, cheerful, curious, obedient, and expressive. This study uncovers the use of anthropomorphism in Upin and Ipin animations, shedding light on its contribution to children's imagination, understanding of complex issues, and story appeal. Through this technique, young audiences can connect with the characters and develop empathy. The findings are relevant for the development of children's films and learning media, as an effective strategy to convey moral values. The study also encourages animation and creative producers to produce creative and diverse content, in line with the demands of complex audiences.

Abstract

Abstract

This research analyzes the element of anthropomorphism in the classical Malay literary work entitled "The Tale of Bayan Budiman". Anthropomorphism is the attribution of human characteristics and behaviors to non-human entities, such as animals and natural phenomena. In this tale, the main character, a Bayan bird, is depicted as having the ability to speak, give advice, tell stories, and lead like a human. This research employs qualitative textual analysis methods to explore the representations of anthropomorphism in the narrative, dialogues, and descriptions of the text. The findings reveal that anthropomorphism is used to convey moral messages, stimulate the reader's imagination, and reflect the Malay worldview on the relationship between humans and nature. However, anthropomorphism can also obscure the essence and nature of different living beings, especially for child readers. This research contributes to the preservation of Malay literary heritage and provides a deeper understanding of the use of anthropomorphism in classical works
