Abstract

Abstract: Engaging in research can benefit students in several ways. However, higher learning institutions have been challenged to engage students in research experiences. The present study is conducted to discover what undergraduate students experience in the research process, and how they accomplish their tasks during the process. Narrative research is used for this study to understand present real-life experiences. The study revealed that students experience different conditions and apply various techniques in the research process. Besides, when they encountered the same or similar challenges, they were prone to accomplish their tasks with the same attempt.Key words: research experience, students’ task accomplishment, narrative inquiryAbstrak: Terlibat dalam penelitian dapat bermanfaat bagi mahasiswa dalam berbagai cara. Namun, lembaga pendidikan tinggi tertantang untuk melibatkan siswa dalam pengalaman penelitian. Penelitian ini dilakukan untuk menemukan apa yang dialami mahasiswa sarjana dalam proses penelitian, dan bagaimana mereka menyelesaikan tugas-tugas mereka selama proses tersebut. Penelitian naratif digunakan dalam penelitian ini untuk memahami pengalaman kehidupan nyata saat ini. Studi ini mengungkapkan bahwa mahasiswa mengalami kondisi yang berbeda dan menerapkan berbagai teknik dalam proses penelitian. Selain itu, ketika mereka menghadapi tantangan yang sama atau serupa, mereka cenderung menyelesaikan tugas-tugas mereka dengan usaha yang sama.Kata kunci: pengalaman meneliti, penyelesaian tugas mahasiswa, investigasi naratif

Abstract

Abstract: This Collaborative Classroom Action Research was aimed at improving the students’ writing ability in recount text at Junior High School (SMP) TTN Paculgowang Jombang, East Java, Indonesia in Academic Year of 2014/2015. The subjects of this study were students of class VIIIA. The instruments in collecting the data were observation checklists, questionnaire, field notes and the students’ writing test. The results of the study show that there were improvement of the students’ participation and  im-provement of the students’ writing ability. From the data collected through students’ questionnaire, the researcher found out that most of the students had positive response toward the implementation of Team Stand-N-Share strategy.Key Words: team stand-n-share, writing ability, recount textAbstrak: Penelitian tindakan kelas kolaborasi ini bertujuan untuk meningkatkan kemampuan menulis siswa dalam teks rekon di SMP TTN Paculgowang Jombang, Jawa Timur, Indonesia tahun akademik 2014/2015. Subjek penelitian adalah siswa kelas VIIIA. Instrumen dalam pengumpulan data adalah daftar periksa observasi, angket, catatan lapangan dan ujian menulis siswa. Hasil penelitian menunjuk-kan bahwa ada peningkatan partisipasi siswa dan peningkatan kemampuan menulis. Dari data yang dikumpulkan melalui kuesioner siswa, ditemukan bahwa sebagian besar siswa memiliki respon positif terhadap pelaksanaan strategi Team Stand-N-Share.Kata kunci: team stand-n-share, kemampuan menulis, teks rekon

Abstract

Abstract: This study was aimed at describing the errors in writing narrative texts made by the stu-dents of SMAN 2 Lamongan. The study employed descriptive cross-sectional quantitative research design. The subjects of this study were students from grade X, XI, and XII of SMAN 2 Lamongan. The main instruments of the study were the writing prompt and narrative guidelines. The students’ writings were scored based on the scoring scale adapted from Cohen and Coffin, et.al; Hyland. The findings showed that the students made errors in moral value, content, organization, grammar, and vocabulary. Grammar is a dominant error because it is found in each grade and each program. The most dominant error in grammar was simple past tense. Key Words: error, narrative writingAbstrak: Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menggambarkan kesalahan dalam menulis teks naratif yang dibuat oleh siswa SMAN 2 Lamongan. Penelitian ini menggunakan desain penelitian cross-sectional kuantitatif deskriptif. Subyek penelitian ini adalah siswa dari kelas X, XI, dan XII SMAN 2 Lamongan. Instrumen utama dari penelitian ini adalah writing prompt dan narrative guidelines. Tulisan-tulisan siswa dinilai berdasarkan skala penilaian yang diadaptasi dari Cohen dan Coffin, dkk.; Hyland. Te-muan menunjukkan bahwa siswa membuat kesalahan pada nilai moral, isi, organisasi, tata bahasa, dan kosa kata. Tata bahasa merupakan kesalahan yang paling dominan karena ditemukan di setiap kelas dan setiap program. Kesalahan yang paling dominan dalam tata bahasa adalah kesalahan ben-tuk simple past tense.Kata kunci: kesalahan, tulisan naratif

Abstract

Abstract: This study examined whether high proficient students who are trained with the treatment of the combination of peer and self-directed feedback (PSF) have better writing ability than the high proficient students who are not trained with this treatment. Employing a quasi-experimental research, this study involved two groups of 28 students given a writing test. The results pointed out that the students who were trained with the combination of PSF had better writing ability than the students who were not trained with the combination of PSF. Teachers are suggested to provide the combination of PSF to high proficient students. Further investigation involving moderate and low proficiency levels is suggested.Key Words: peer and self-directed feeedback, writing ability, English proficiencyAbstrak: Penelitian ini menguji apakah mahasiswa yang dilatih dengan perlakuan kombinasi umpan balik dari teman sebaya dan diri sendiri (PSF) memiliki kemampuan menulis yang lebih baik daripada mahasiswa yang tidak dilatih dengan perlakuan kombinasi umpan balik dari teman sebaya dan diri sendiri. Dengan desain kuasi eksperimental, penelitian ini melibatkan dua kelompok dengan 28 mahasiswa yang diberi tes menulis. Hasil menunjukkan bahwa mahasiswa yang dilatih dengan kombinasi PSF memiliki kemampuan yang lebih baik daripada mahasiswa yang tidak dilatih dengan kombinasi PSF. Guru disarankan memberikan perlakuan ini pada siswa yang mahir berbahasa Inggris. Penelitian lanjutan melibatkan kemahiran bahasa Inggris sedang dan tinggi pun disarankan.Kata kunci: umpan balik teman sebaya dan diri sendiri, kemampuan menulis, mahir berbahasa Inggris

Abstract

Abstract: Teaching English writing for the students of junior high school level needs high creativity, the students have to be encouraged to study hard to gain writing competence. Additionally, the students themselves face many problems: the lack of vocabulary and poor knowledge of grammar. The objective of the study is to improve the students’ writing ability using RAFT strategy employing classroom action research (CAR) design involving two cycles, three meetings each. The observation to see the result of the implementation used questionnaire, observation checklist, writing test and field notes. The expected criteria of success were that all the students achieve the minimum passing grade 55 and 75% of them involve actively in the implementation of the RAFT strategy. Thirty students of grade 8 of MTs Salafiyah Syafiiyah Babakan Ciwaringin Cirebon West Java participated in the study. The finding shows the implementation of RAFT strategy was successful to improve the students’ writing ability. All the students achieved the score at least 55 and 74.24% of them actively involved in the process of teaching and learning.  Key Words: RAFT strategy, improve, writing, ability.

Abstract

The purpose of the study was to determine the impact of mind mapping as a strategy in generating ideas before writing on the EFL students’ idea development in argumentative writing as perceived from their gender differences and learning styles. By conducting an experimental investigation at university level in Indonesia, two existing TOEFL classes at the State Islamic Studies (STAIN) in Kediri were selected by a lottery to group 1: using linear notes (N=41), and group 2: using mind mapping (N=41). For analyzing the data, Analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) were utilized by using students’ TOEFL score as the covariate variable. The result findings indicated that there is no significant difference on the students’ idea developments in writing between the control and the experimental groups. These result also revealed that there is no significant difference on the students’ idea development in writing between gender differences, and among the students’ learning styles. Furthermore, there is no significant interaction between treatment and gender differences, and there is no significant interaction between treatment and learning styles.
