Abstract

Hypothesis is very often inevitable in research activities. Hypothesis is of at least three kinds, each of which should not be confused. A study trying to measure the relationship between variables can predict the finding based on theory or logical common sense. This prediction is called theoretical hypothesis. In testing hypothesis quantitatively, the theoretical hypothesis should be transformed into statistical hypothesis, which takes the form of Null hypothesis and its alternatives. It is the Null hypothesis that is to be tested to justify its rejection or otherwise its acceptance. In qualitative study, the result of first data analysis is called temporal empirical hypothesis that should be validated with more data. This cycle of rechecking the result with more data is done again and again until the hypothesis becomes the final conclusion.

Abstract

The needs survey shows that English communication skill of the students in nursing school speaking classes is not well developed. Consequently, the speaking instructional materials used in the classes need to be advanced. Yalden’s (1987) Language Program Development covering Needs Analysis, Syllabus and Materials Development, Expert Validation, and Try-out is used to produce a speaking syllabus and textbook for nursing students preparing to work at hospitals abroad with the following characteristics: (1) the topics are based on the activities of nurses in hospitals; (2) the vocabulary exercises are based on the nurses’ needs in under- standing the nursing context; (3) the speaking activities are based on the needs to communicate in nursing settings using the principles of CTL; (4) the language functions are explained to support the nursing students to form their own sentences in their speaking practice. The product is found acceptable for nursing students.

Abstract

The present study aimed to investigate the correlation between learner autonomy psychologically defined in the study as a composite of behavioral intentions to do autonomous learning and self-efficacy in relation to autonomous learning, and English proficiency. The sample comprised 120 first semester English-majored students of a state university in Bali, Indonesia. The data were collected from documents and by administering two questionnaires. Multiple linear regression analysis conducted revealed that learner autonomy and English proficiency as defined in the study had a significant, strong, positive relationship. Some suggestions related to the results of the study, especially in the EFL context, are discussed.

Abstract

Based on the needs analysis stage, it is found that the existing speaking materials do not employ character building aspects as demanded by the curriculum. Therefore, new speaking materials that incorporate character building aspects need to be developed. Research and Development (R&D) by Borg and Gall (1983)was used in this research involving the needs analysis, material development, expert validation, try-out, and final product.Five units with various tasks and activities which include both individual and group activities were developed containing the topics ofFriendship, Speak Up, Making Telephone Call,Share Your Story, and Indonesian Folktales. The researchers adopted the task-based and project-based learning principles. Particular aspects of character building were chosen based on the activities to be done by the students so that the students will be aware that they learnmoral values during the lesson. To help the English teachersthis materials provides teacher’s guide so that the teacher knows what s/he should do to teach character building aspects. After being validated by two education experts and tried out, the product is considered appropriate and acceptable to be taught to eight graders at SMPN 3 Batu.

Abstract

The purpose of the study was to determine the impact of mind mapping as a strategy in generating ideas before writing on the EFL students’ idea development in argumentative writing as perceived from their gender differences and learning styles. By conducting an experimental investigation at university level in Indonesia, two existing TOEFL classes at the State Islamic Studies (STAIN) in Kediri were selected by a lottery to group 1: using linear notes (N=41), and group 2: using mind mapping (N=41). For analyzing the data, Analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) were utilized by using students’ TOEFL score as the covariate variable. The result findings indicated that there is no significant difference on the students’ idea developments in writing between the control and the experimental groups. These result also revealed that there is no significant difference on the students’ idea development in writing between gender differences, and among the students’ learning styles. Besides, they have positive attitudes toward reading, various kinds of English reading texts and topics to read, various reading purposes, and positive beliefs toward English reading habits. However, it is found that some respondents have difficulties to give fast responses in answering the questions through the questionnaire platform used. Therefore, some suggestions are also given as the recommendations for future researchers related to this field of study.
