Abstract

Culture and language are habitual things that are always done by the generation in a region. This research focused on the study of ethno-linguistic that discovered the grammatical meaning, cultural meaning and symbolic meaning of ‘Nyekah’ ceremony in Sesetan village, Denpasar. This research is an ethno-linguistic study in which the researcher will examine the procession of Nyekah in the perspective of linguistic that is related with culture. The method of data collection used is participatory observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation. There were 22 lingual elements that those data were categorized as elliptical sentences. Those data were analyzed to find the grammatical and cultural meaning. Furthermore, in ‘Nyekah’ ceremony there were 6 symbolic data which were used in the ritual. Every symbol had deep meaning that were related with religion, human life and nature.

Abstract

Ekowisata atau ekoturisme telah menjadi wacana yang sangat mengemuka di kalangan pelaku wisata pada dekade ini. Sebagai sebuah bentuk wisata, ekowisata memiliki 2 aspek penting, yakni konservasi lingkungan alam dan masyarakat secara sosial dan ekonomi. Univeristas Warmadewa telah menunjukkan kepekaan terhadap isu tersebut dan menuangkannya ke dalam visinya. Visi tersebut tentu harus ditindaklanjuti oleh seluruh civitas akademika di Universitas Warmadewa, salah satunya dengan kemampuan menggunakan bahasa Inggris sebagai syarat untuk kompetitif secara global dan terlibat dalam perencanaan ekowisata. Abstract

Artikel yang bertemakan sikap positif para remaja di Desa Buduk, Kecamatan Mengwi, Kabupaten Badung terhadap bahasa Bali merupakan hasil sebuah penelitian. Penelitian tentang sikap bahasa ini tampak penting dilakukan untuk menelaah keberadaan bahasa Bali sebagai bahasa daerah di kalangan para remaja. Masalah yang dikaji dalam penelitian ini terdiri atas bentuk dan faktor sikap bahasa para remaja di Desa Buduk, Kecamatan Mengwi, Kabupaten Badung terhadap bahasa Bali. Teori yang diterapkan adalah Teori Sikap Bahasa yang dikemukakan oleh Ladegaard (2000). Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa para remaja di Desa Buduk, Kecamatan Mengwi, Kabupaten Badung memiliki sikap bahasa yang positif terhadap bahasa Bali. Faktor-faktor yang mendukung sikap bahasa mereka itu dalah demografi dan loyalitas bahasa.

Abstract

Taboo words are a proscription of behaviour which affects people’s social life. The words and expressions classified as taboo are commonly used to describe sex, our bodies and their functions, and also to insult other people. This article analyzes the kinds and the functions of taboo words found in Crank 2: High Voltage movie. The method used in this research is qualitative research. To analyze the problems of this research, it is applied the theory of taboo words by Jay and the functions of taboo by Wardaugh. From the analysis, it is found seven kinds of taboo word occurred in the movie. They are profanity, obscenity, vulgarity, slang, epithets, insult and slurs, and scatology. Furthermore, the function analysis found in this research includes: to draw attention to oneself, to show contempt, to be provocative, and to mock authority.

Abstract

This research has the background of the phenomena of local languages claimed to decrease in numbers these decades. It aims to explore the dynamics of language attitudes of the teenagers at Desa Buduk, Badung and the factors causing the dynamics supported by using theory of Language Attitudes of Ladegaard (2000). The methods applied in this research included survey and participative observation. The results of the research show that the language attitudes of the teenagers to Balinese language are dynamic. The quantitative analysis indicates that 80% of them strongly agreed to the statements of cognitive language attitudes about Balinese language and its speakers. Then, 80% of them also agreed to the statements of affective language attitudes language concerning with preference in using Balinese language, but they disagreed the statements of greetings using other language than Balinese language and news on TVs and radios using other language than Balinese language and news. They also had positive for the statement in conative language attitudes concerning with the transfer of Balinese language to their children, but in that component of language attitude they were negative for statements about responses of using Balinese language only, admonishing people using other language, and switching off TV or radio using languages other than Balinese. The qualitative analysis of this research shows that most teenagers at Desa Buduk, Badung had positive language attitudes to Balinese language indicated by their behaviors using Balinese language. But, some high class teenagers showed the use of Indonesian language. The dynamics of the language attitudes of the teenagers at Desa Buduk, Badung to Balinese language by language loyalty, language value, and residential density.

Abstract

Penelitian ini dilatarbelakangi oleh situasi masyarakat multietnis yang memiliki bahasa berbeda-beda. Masalah peneltian meliputi pilihan bahasa, penggunaan bahasa, sikap bahasa, dan faktor pilihan bahasa warga pendatang nonetnis Bali di Desa Buduk, Badung. Teori yang digunakan adalah Teori Pilihan Bahasa, Teori Etnografi Komunikasi, Teori Sikap Bahasa, dan Teori Faktor Pilihan Bahasa dengan metode penelitian survei dan observasi. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan : 1) warga pendatang nonetnis Bali di Desa Buduk, Badung melakukan pilihan terhadap bahasa Bali (BB); 2) warga pendatang nonetnis Bali di Desa Buduk, Badung menggunakan BB dengan lancar dengan ragam biasa dan sebagian mampu menggunakannya dengan ragam halus; 3) warga pendatang nonetnis Bali di Desa Buduk, Badung memliki sikap bahasa sangat positif terhadap BB; dan faktor pilihan bahasa warga pendatang nonetnis Bali di Desa Buduk, Badung adalah kedwibahasaan, sikap bahasa, lingkungan hunian, dan interaksi sosial. Pilihan dan penggunaan bahasa tersebut menunjukkan wujud toleransi warga pendatang nonetnis Bali di Desa Buduk, Badung terhadap warga etnis Bali di Desa Buduk, Badung.

Abstract

This research aims to analyze the conversational structures used by waiters in videos uploaded to YouTube channels. This research focuses on using English in restaurant service and its relationship with the tourism industry using digital technology. The research data was obtained from videos uploaded by YouTubers showing waiters' activities, particularly their communication with customers. The phenomenological method, a qualitative approach, was used in this study. The data collected was analyzed through transcription to find the conversational structures used. The results show that waitresses use English terms for various purposes, such as greeting, requesting information, and informing others. These phrases usually use a formal style that shows the service's professionalism. In addition, the conversations found show organized and effective communication techniques. This can be a learning reference for tourism industry players and people who want to improve their English skills. This study found that the effective use of English in the tourism industry is very important, especially in improving the quality of communication and service. This study also helps develop sociopragmatic research in digital communication and suggests further research to investigate interaction patterns on other social media platforms.

Abstract

This study aims to discuss the code mixings used in social media, especially the types and the reasons of using them.  This research used qualitative method, in which the data were analyzed by the theory of code mixing by Muysken (2000) to describe the types of code mixing, and the theory of Nababan (1984) to describe the reasons for using code mixing. The data were collected from Warren Hue in Volix Media Youtube Channel. This research was done by applying three steps, 1) collecting the data by watching the video, 2) transcribing the video conversation to find the utterance where the code mixing occurs, 3) sorting the data and analyzing them based on the theories applied. The results shows that there were three types of code mixing found, which were insertion, alternation, and congruent lexicalization. It was also found that there were three reasons for using code mixing, which were 1) for fun or informal situation, 2) the absences for inappropriate expressions, and 3) for showing language skills.

Abstract

The problem faced by members of South Denpasar Police Sector as community service partners is their very limited ability to communicate in English, such as asking questions and giving explanations when providing services to foreigners. This study aims to determine the role of communicative English in improving services for members of South Denpasar Sector Police. The method used in this study is a lecture, pair work, and conversation methods. This study was conducted at South Denpasar Sector Police Office. The office is located in the tourist area of ​​Sanur, so automatically the area of ​​duty includes Sanur area itself, which is one of the main tourist destinations for domestic and foreign tourists. The results of this study indicated that communicative English training can have an impact on vocabulary mastery, communication skills, and grammar mastery by the trainees.

Abstract

Learning English is still quite difficult, especially among junior high school students. Learning difficulties due to the lack of motivation to learn, infrastructure, learning materials and environment. The difficulty often faced by students is about pronunciation or speaking ability. The atmosphere of the Covid-19 pandemic is a major problem in the implementation of teaching because learning is carried out online and this is a new challenge for students and educators, therefore to increase learning interest for students, learning is still designed as well as possible so that students are able to participate in learning. Based on the phenomenon, the Master of linguistics at Warmadewa University takes part through community service activities by holding training programs in the form of online learning about how to speak English so that students have high motivation even in a pandemic situation. This is done with the aim of assisting students in improving their English language skills of Swastika students located in Badung District which is not far from the Warmadewa University. The four language skills that help students learn a language are writing, reading, listening and speaking. This study was designed using qualitative research with the FGD method. This study aims to explain the difficulty of English among junior high school level students.
