Abstract

This research was conducted to find out the effect of rice straw and ratio of Urea, TSP, KCL on the growth and production of soybean. This research has been conducted in the experimental farm, Faculty of Agriculture University of Riau, from January to April 2016. This study used randomized block design (RAK), arrange in a factorial with 2 factors, factors of rice straw mulch with 3 levels doses of 0 kg/Ha, 5 kg/Ha, 10 kg/Ha and factor ratio of Urea, TSP, KCL with 4 levels doses of 0 kg/Ha, 25, 50, 50 kg/Ha, 50, 100, 100 kg/Ha, 75, 150, 150 kg/Ha, two factors combined to obtain 12 combined treatment, for each treatment consisted of three replications, in order to get 36 experimental units. The data were analyzed by analysis of variance and significantly different continued with Duncan New Multiple Range Test (DNMRT) at 5% level. Each experimental unit consisted of 52 plants, only seven plants become sample. The parameters measured were the number of the effectiveness root nodules per plant, the growth rate of plants, weeds, number of pods per plant, pods percentage pithy, dry seed weight/m2, and the weight of 100 seeds. Research data show that rice straw dose of 10 ton/Ha and ratio of Urea, TSP, KCl doses of 50, 100, 100 kg/Ha produces a dry seed weight of 2,69 tons/Ha, higher than without treatments is 1,3 tons/Ha.  Keywords: soybeans, organic mulch, rice straw.

Abstract

CO2 flux from peat soil planted with oil palm is temporally and spatially dynamic, which is related to various environmental factors. This flux can be partitioned into fluxes from oil palm root respiration, litter decomposition, and peat material decomposition. The aim of this study was to determine the temporal and spatial dynamics of CO2 fluxes, the contribution of oil palm roots respiration, the contribution of litter decomposition, and the relation between flux and environmental factors in oil palm plantations on peatland. Measurements of CO2 flux using an infrared gas analyzer (IRGA) were carried out in harvesting path and inter raw of oil palm plantation, and nearby bushland. Flux measurements were repeated every three to four days for almost five months. Results showed the dynamics of the CO2 fluxes temporally and spatially. Temporally, CO2 flux in oil palm plantation and bushland ranged from 2.9 – 11.1 and 0.5 – 6.4 g C-CO2 m2/day, respectively. Spatially, the flux in oil palm plantation and bushland ranged from 4.8 – 8.8 and 2.7 – 3.4 g C-CO2 m2/day, respectively. The contribution of oil palm roots respiration and litter decomposition were 48.4 and 5.8%, respectively. These results confirm that plant roots respiration plays an important role in the release of carbon from the soil surface.

Abstract

This study aimed to determine the effect of pyrolysis methods on the biochar yield from oil palm empty fruit bunches (EFB) using variations in material form and combustion systems. The research was conducted from March to May 2025 in Sorek Satu, Pelalawan Regency, Riau Province, and in the Soil Science Laboratory, Faculty of Agriculture, Riau University. The study consisted of several treatments: (1) whole EFB – external semi-vacuum combustion, (2) shredded EFB – external semi-vacuum combustion, (3) whole EFB – total internal vacuum combustion, and (4) shredded EFB – total internal vacuum combustion. Collected data from the study were analyzed using descriptive statistics. The results showed that external semivacuum pyrolysis produced a higher biochar yield compared to total internal vacuum pyrolysis, with the highest yield from whole EFB at 45.6% and shredded EFB at 32.8%. The total internal vacuum system failed to produce biochar and only resulted in dry material without undergoing carbonization. The chemical characteristics from the external semi-vacuum combustion system indicated that biochar from whole EFB had higher contents of carbon, potassium, magnesium, boron, and pH, while biochar from shredded EFB tended to have higher contents of nitrogen, calcium, and iron.

Abstract

The Edu-Eco-School Program was implemented as a community service activity at SMPS Khazanah Boarding School, Pujud District, with the aim of optimizing school land through the cultivation of food crops and vegetables supported by a water-efficient irrigation system. This program is significant as it aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Zero Hunger and Climate Action, which emphasize food security and water resource conservation in education. The implementation stages included land condition surveys, the design and construction of a bore well and PVC pipe network as an irrigation system for plant watering, agricultural training, and mentoring up to the harvesting stage. The program successfully transformed underutilized land into a productive garden with various commodities, such as chili, tomato, corn, and vegetables. The harvest not only met the school’s basic needs but also served as a contextual learning medium for students to practice sustainable agriculture. Overall, this program enhanced school community engagement, improved water-use efficiency, and created a productive green area that supports local food security while strengthening environmental education.
