Abstract

Nearly one in five pupils in OECD nations do not possess the fundamental knowledge and abilities necessary to get by in today's communities (OECD, 2019), which is a sign of exclusion. There is an unfairness in that students from low socioeconomic origins are twice as likely to be low performers, suggesting that social or personal factors prevent them from fulfilling their educational potential. This study intends to investigate the achievement of the 21st Century Biology Skills Test (21CBST) and to compare it to students’ level of socio-economic status. The result (TIMSS) (2015) revealed that Indonesian students failed to achieve minimum standards in Science and Mathematics, with 33.3% achievement in science and 35% in mathematics for content domain and 33,3% in the cognitive domain. Comprising 37 multiple choice items, the 21st Century Biology Skills Test (21C-BST) includes representatives from five domains which are; i) Digital Age Literacy, ii) Inventive Thinking, iii) Effective Communication, iv) High Productivity, and v) Religion, Health and Civic. The respondents comprised 210 form students who took biology subject in school. The study revealed that students from high socio-economic status scored higher than their counterparts from low socioeconomic status. This paper concludes with some practical suggestions for improving students’ 21st-century skills, particularly within the context of biology teaching and learning.

Abstract

SMP Negeri 3 Kolaka sebagai mitra dalam PKM ini merupakan salah satu Satuan Pendidikan yang ada di Kabupaten Kolaka, Sulawesi Tenggara yang rencana akan menerapkan kurikulum “Merdeka Belajar” pada tahun 2024, namun harus dimulai dari kesiapan guru-gurunya terlebih dahulu, karena guru sebagai bagian integral dalam impelementasi kurikulum ini. Secara umum mitra memiliki kompetensi yang rendah dalam menguasai dan menerapkan model pembelajaran sesuai dengan kurikulum merdeka belajar, mitra kurang mempelajari dan memahami model pembelajaran yang bersifat student centered berbasis blended learning, serta belum adanya mitra yang mengikuti program pelatihan sekolah penggerak yang akan mendukung implementasi kurikulum merdeka belajar. Untuk itu, tujuan PKM dilaksanakan adalah memberikan pelatihan dan pendampingan kepada mitra untuk meningkatkan pengetahuan dan keterampilan mitra dalam menerapkan model pembelajaran berbasis blended learning, sebagai upaya mendukung percepatan implementasi kurikulum merdeka belajar. Kegiatan diawali dengan koordinasi dan sosialisasi, selanjutnya melatih dan mendampingi mitra dalam menerapkan model pembelajaran berbasis blended learning di antaranya model pembelajaran inkuiri, PBL, PjBL, kooperatif, dan flipped classroom. Berdasarkan analisis deskriptif kuantitatif terhadap hasil PkM yang telah dilaksanakan diperoleh: kemampuan guru dalam menerapkan model pembelajaran berbasis blended learning berada pada kategori baik (skor rata-rata 3,1). Sedangkan mitra yang memberikan respon positif sebesar 86,67%, sehingga dapat disimpulkan jika kegiatan PkM yang dilaksanakan berhasil sesuai tujuan.

Abstract

Background: Communication skills are one of the 21st-century learning skills that need to be mastered by students of the Biology Education Study Program of the University of nineteen November Kolaka as prospective teachers to face increasingly complex challenges. The research aims to analyze students' communication skills by applying a free inquiry approach based on blended learning. Method: Quasi Research Experiment with Non-equivalent Control Group Design design. Control groups, lectures by applying conventional models (online group discussions) while experimental groups apply free inquiry approach based on blended learning. Student communication skills data is obtained through observation sheets and analyzed using inferential statistical analysis (t-test) with the help of IBM SPSS Statistic 20 with the formula Analyze-Compare Means-Independent T-Test and descriptive statistics by calculating the average score of each indicator of student communication skills. Results: Obtained a level of significance (p < 0.05) or (4,335 > 2,056) then Ha was accepted and H0 was rejected, meaning there was an effect on the application of free inquiry approach based on blended learning to student communication skills, and the results of the description analysis showed an average score of student communication skills in the experimental class of 74.24 with good categories and in control classes of 60.39 with sufficient categories. Conclusion: Learning by applying a free inquiry approach based on blended learning positively influences students' communication skills.
