Abstract

Primary teeth play a role in mastication, speech function, appearance, and as a provider of space for children's permanent teeth. Mothers need to know the functions of their children's primary teeth so they are willing to take care of their children's teeth. This study aims to see the relationship of a mother’s knowledge regarding the functions of children’s primary teeth to the number of children and the level of education in Salapian District, Langkat. This study is an analytical study with a cross-sectional design. The research subjects were 100 people; 30 prospective mothers, 30 mothers with one child, and 40 mothers with more than one child. Data were collected using the interview technique and the analytical test used was the Kruskal Wallis test with a significance value of p<0.05. The results showed that 15 respondents (15%) had a good level of mother’s knowledge regarding the functions of children’s primary teeth, 36 respondents (36%) were in an insufficient category, and 49 respondents (49%) were in less category. Statistical analysis showed a significant relationship between the mother’s knowledge regarding children’s primary teeth functions the number of children and education level (p=0.001 and p=0.001). This study concluded that mothers who have many children have a better knowledge about functions of primary teeth than mothers with few children. Mothers with higher education levels have a better level of knowledge than mothers with primarysecondary education. Abstract

Covid-19 is an infectious disease that is growing rapidly throughout the world. Dental care carries a risk of infection, as the procedure involves face-to-face communication with the patient, exposure to saliva, blood, other body fluids and the use of sharp instruments. Parents are afraid to take their children to visit the dentist because it will affect the child's oral and dental health. The aim of this study was to examine the relationship between parents' knowledge, attitudes and practices regarding children's dental care visits during the Covid-19 pandemic and parents' age and education level. Descriptive research with a cross-sectional design. The research subjects were 106 parents of children aged 6-12 years. Sampling was taken using the interview method with 11 questions. Analysis using Chi square. Research results: 26.4% of parents from the 30-39 year age group stated that dental care could cause children to be infected with the Covid-19 virus (p<0.05), based on the level of knowledge, parents with a postgraduate level of knowledge answered that dental care could cause 19.8% of children were infected with the Covid virus (p<0.05). There were no differences in parental attitudes based on age and parental education level in taking their children to the dentist (p>0.05). It was concluded that there was no relationship between age and parents' level of knowledge regarding children's dental care visits during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Abstract

Pertumbuhan gigi merupakan proses erupsinya gigi sulung dan permanen di rongga mulut. Pengetahuan mengenai pertumbuhan gigi penting dimiliki ibu agar dapat menjaga kondisi rongga mulut anak tetap baik. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk melihat hubungan antara tingkat pengetahuan ibu dengan jumlah anak dan tingkat pendidikan mengenai pertumbuhan gigi anak di Kecamatan Salapian, Langkat. Penelitian ini menggunakan rancangan cross-sectional dengan metode analitik. Subjek penelitian sebanyak 100 orang yaitu 30 orang calon ibu, 30 orang ibu yang memiliki satu orang anak, dan 40 orang ibu yang memiliki lebih dari satu orang anak. Pengambilan data dilakukan dengan teknik wawancara dan menggunakan uji Chi Square dengan nilai kemaknaan p0,05. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan tingkat pengetahuan ibu pada kategori baik sebanyak 18 responden (18%), kategori cukup 34 responden (34%), dan kategori kurang 48 responden (48%). Analisis statistik menunjukkan adanya hubungan yang bermakna antara tingkat pengetahuan ibu dengan jumlah anak dan tingkat pendidikan mengenai pertumbuhan gigi anak (p= 0.001 dan p=0.002). Disimpulkan bahwa ibu yang mempunyai banyak anak memiliki tingkat pengetahuan lebih baik dibandingkan dengan calon ibu maupun ibu dengan satu orang anak, serta ibu yang berpendidikan tinggi memiliki pengetahuan lebih baik dibandingkan ibu yang berpendidikan dasar maupun menengah.

Abstract

Oral mucositis is a side effect of chemotherapy, characterized by deep ulceration that causes white spots in the mouth. This research aimed to determine the optimal dose of 5-Fluorouracil in causing oral mucositis in rats by injecting a single dose intraperitoneally (IP) with and without chemical stimulus. The research design was a post-test control group with 24 male Wistar rats divided into eight groups. Six groups were injected with 5-Fluorouracil without chemical stimulus at a dose of 200 mg/kg, 175 mg/kg, 150 mg/kg, 125 mg/kg, 75 mg/kg, and 70 mg/kg. Meanwhile, two groups were given chemical stimulus with a dose of 5-fluorouracil 100 mg/kg (D0: 60 mg/kg, D2: 40 mg/kg), and 60 mg/kg. Observation was carried out for 21 days by paying attention to the appearance of oral mucositis and how long the rats survived. The results showed that rats injected with 5-Fluorouracil at a dose of 175 mg/kg, 150 mg/kg, 125 mg/kg, 75 mg/kg, and 70 mg/kg died before 21 days without the appearance of oral mucositis. Furthermore, rats injected with a dose of 100 mg/kg survived until an average of 13.34 days and oral mucositis appeared on day 7. Rats injected with a dose of 60 mg/kg survived more than 21 days with oral mucositis appearing on day 5. In conclusion, the optimal dose to cause oral mucositis in rats was 60 mg/kg and added a chemical stimulus in the form of 50% acetic acid.

Abstract

Children with Special Needs is a person who has behavioral, physical and intellectual barriers that make doctor have to change approach with various ways to do the treatment. Children with special needs is a high-risk group for health problems, especially dental caries and periodontal disease, but in fact they are often too late to get dental treatment or never get the treatment. The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence and experience of caries and dental care needs in children with special needs atSLB Taman Pendidikan Islam in Medan. The research was conducted by descriptive survey. The sample was 96 children with special needs with aged between 5-29 years old. Clinical caries examination using def-t / DMF-T (WHO) index and modified Treatment Need Index (TNI). The study is represent that the prevalence of children's caries is 92,71%. Experience of dental caries is 2,28+3,25; while the permanent dental caries experience was 3,02+2,98. Based on Treatment Need Index (TNI), the level of dental care needs was 656 teeth or average dental treatment of each child requires was 6.83 teeth, with the three most needed treatment is a surface restoration was 2.49 teeth, followed by tooth extraction was1.43 teeth and pulp treatment was 0.70 teeth. From the study it can be concluded that the level of dental hygiene in the chidren with special needs was still quite low, as well as the utilization of dental facilities.

Abstract

The new corona virus epidemic (COVID-19) was declared a global pandemic on March 11, 2020 by the World Health Organization (WHO). The Covid-19 mortality rate in Indonesia of 8.9% is the highest number in Southeast Asia. Knowledge of the prevention of the Covid-19 pandemic is very important to prevent the transmission of Covid-19. The purpose of this study was to determine the level of knowledge of parents, teachers, and students of Taman Harapan Islam Medan Elementary School about the prevention of the Covid-19 pandemic. This study used a pretest questionnaire for initial data collection, then counseling was carried out on the prevention of Covid-19 and for the final data collection, a postest questionnaire was used. The results of the Mann Whitney test showed that there were differences in the level of knowledge of parents and children about Covid-19 before counseling (p: 0.022) and there were differences in the level of knowledge of parents and children about Covid-19 after counseling (p: 0.002). So it can be concluded that there is an influence on the level of knowledge of parents and children about the spread of Covid-19 infection. Education about preventing the spread of Covid-19 to parents of students, teachers and students of the Taman Harapan Islam Medan Elementary School can provide an understanding of the importance of preventing the spread of Covid-19 and can be passed on to their families and the surrounding environment.

Abstract

Based on SEARO (South-East Asia Region) data in 2013, shows that around 70-95% of dental caries occurs in school-age children. This shows the importance of knowledge of dental and oral health to make efforts to prevent dental and oral diseases. The knowledge of parents and teachers has an important role in influencing children's attitudes and behavior in maintaining oral and dental hygiene. The purpose of this study was to determine the level of knowledge of parents, teachers, and students of SD Tunas Harapan Islam Medan about oral health. This study used a pretest questionnaire for initial data collection, then counseling on dental and oral health to parents and teachers and for final data collection a postest questionnaire was used. The results of the dependent T test showed that there was a difference in the average results of the questionnaire before and after counseling for parents and teachers (p = 0.0001) and students (p = 0.0001). So it can be concluded that there is an effect of doing counseling on the level of knowledge of parents, teachers and students about oral health. Counseling on oral health at SD Tunas Harapan Islam Medan can provide an understanding of the importance of maintaining oral health and of course it can be passed on to families and the surrounding environment so that the environment of SD Tunas Harapan Islam Medan can be free from dental and oral diseases.
