Abstract

Indonesia has the third highest maternal mortality rate in ASEAN. The Maternal Perinatal Death Surveillance and Response (MPDSR) program was established to reduce the high maternal mortality rate. However, the effectiveness of maternal audit implementation still faces many obstacles. This study aims to describe the obstacles faced by the MPDSR team in assessing maternal mortality in Lombok Island. We used qualitative study with case study design through in-depth interviews with nine informants from two MPDSR program holders at the Health Offices and one Maternal Perinatal Death Notification (MPDN) coordinator at the West Nusa Tenggara Health Office in 2022. Data were analyzed using the thematic analysis approach. Triangulation were done by method triangulation, triangulation between researchers, triangulation of data sources, and theoretical triangulation. The results showed that the problems faced by the MPDSR team, including ineffective of MPDSR socialization, budget limitations of MPDSR activities, feature issues in the MPDN, the ratio between labor and workload was less than ideal, incomplete and delayed collection of maternal mortality data, lack of communication between MPDSR teams, health workers have not been trained in the data entry process, labor outside of medical supervision, no monitoring of maternal mortality cases in wards other than obgyn, health workers did not understand the ICD-10 code, the assessment was still conducted in a hybrid, not all maternal death cases were assessed, blaming culture, and suboptimal monitoring of the sustainability of MPDSR recommendation. Therefore, it was necessary to establish discussion to find strategies and solutions based on a priority scale.

Abstract

Various studies have been widely published regarding the efficacy and adverse effects of facial care products with research populations from adolescent to young adults. However, it is necessary to first identify the characteristics of this parameters in the local population. The purpose of this study is to obtain an overview of the characteristics of the biophysical parameters of facial skin in a population of teenagers and young adults who tend to be active indoors, especially UNRAM medical students. This was an analytical observational study with a cross-sectional approach. Participants filled out questionnaires and followed procedures for examining facial skin biophysical parameters. The results of this study showed that from 147 participants, the average TEWL level was 8,99 g/h/m2; mean degree of erythema was 262,5; the average melanin index was 192,1 and the average sebum level was 192,1. Statistical analysis found that there was an association between gender and all facial skin biophysical parameters, a relationship between age and sebum levels and a relationship between daily activities in an air-conditioned room and the degree of erythema. With the data presented in this study, research related to facial skin biophysical parameters in similar populations can be developed further.

Abstract

Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) is a global problem that causes increased morbidity, mortality, and healthcare costs. AMR arises from the irrational use of antibiotics in medicine and agriculture. This study aims to determine the profile of Gram-negative ESBL bacteria living in the cecum of broiler chickens. This study is a descriptive exploratory study using 5 chicken cecum samples taken from the Pagesangan market in Mataram city. The obtained bacteria were calculated by placing them on Macconkey agar media to count bacterial colonies. The results of this study showed that 20.1% of bacteria in the chicken cecum could grow on Macconkey media mixed with cefotaxime. Meanwhile, on Macconkey media without cefotaxime, 79.9% were obtained. Based on macroscopic, microscopic, and biochemical characteristics, it was found that the gram-negative bacteria obtained were Escherichia coli. In sensitivity tests, it was found that the bacteria were resistant to tetracycline (100%) and ampicillin (100%), and 25% were resistant to chloramphenicol. The conclusion is that gram-negative bacteria found in the cecum of broiler chickens, such as Escherichia coli, are resistant to several antibiotics. These bacteria are resistant to cefotaxime (20.1%), chloramphenicol (25%), tetracycline (100%), and ampicillin (100%).

Abstract

Pseudomonas aeruginosais a major antibiotic-resistant pathogen frequently associated with hospital-acquired infections posing significant treatment challenges. This study aimed to evaluate the antibacterial activity of the ethyl acetate fraction of green tea (Camellia sinensis L.) enriched with vitamin C against Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The ethyl acetate fraction obtained from 96% ethanol maceration was tested at concentrations of 12,5-200 mg/mL both with and without vitamin C using the disk diffusion method and compared to aztreonam as a positive control. Results showed that vitamin C enrichment increased the inhibition zone from 12,5 mm to 13,8 mm at 200 mg/mL, while aztreonam produced the largest inhibition zone at 20,17 mm. The vitamin C-enriched formulation also maintened antibacterical activity more effectively over a 5-15 day storage period. Vitamin C is believed to stabilize the primary antimicrobial compound epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) by preventing its oxidation. These findings support the potential of vitamin C-enriched green tea extract as an adjunctive therapy against Pseudomonas aeruginosa infections. Further development of topical or systemic formulations is recommended for managing resistant bacterial infections.

Abstract

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a common reproductive endocrine hormone disorder in women of childbearing age with a global incidence of 8-13%. The use of medical drugs in the long term can cause serious side effects so that the utilization of curcumin contained in Curcuma longa can be an alternative therapy consideration for PCOS. This paper will discuss the potential and benefits of curcumin content as an alternative therapy for PCOS. The method used, namely by reviewing the literature in national and international journals that are in accordance with the objectives of the review. The results of the literature review show that curcumin has effectiveness in treating PCOS through various mechanisms of action accompanied by minimal side effects. Alternative therapy of PCOS by taking curcumin needs to consider the dose, duration of use, and further research with larger subjects in assessing its effectiveness and side effects. However, it is suspected that nanocurcumin formulations have higher bioavailability and solubility than free curcumin, giving it even greater potential in the treatment of PCOS in the future. In conclusion, curcumin has the potential as an alternative therapy for PCOS that requires further research to achieve the optimization of PCOS treatment in the future.
