Abstract

Silent pandemic is a health issue related to antimicrobial resistance. Currently, deaths due to antimicrobial resistance in the world reach 700 thousand people per year and it is predicted that by 2050 it could reach 10 million people. So exploring new alternative sources is a must. One ingredient that is often used as an infection medicine and health supplement is honey propolis. Sumbawa white honey propolis is a biological product that has not yet been widely explored for its potential as an antibacterial. The research aims to determine the phytochemical content and antibacterial potential of Sumbawa white honey propolis against Staphylococcus epidermidis, Staphylococcus aureus and Escherchia coli. This research is a true experiment research with a post-test only control group design. Propolis is extracted by maceration with propylene glycol as a solvent. The concentrations of propolis extract used are 100%, 75% and 50%. Chloramphenicol positive control and 10% DMSO negative control. The antibacterial test was detected in five replications on Mueller Hinton Agar media using the disk diffusion method by measuring the diameter of the inhibition zone. Data were analyzed statistically using the OneWay Anova test. Sumbawa white honey propolis contains flavonoids, tannins and triterpenoids. The results showed that propolis was unable to inhibit gram-negative E. coli bacteria with an inhibition zone diameter of 0 mm. Different results in gram positives, Sumbawa white honey propolis was able to inhibit the growth of S. epidermidis and S. aureus. The results showed that propolis was unable to inhibit gram-negative E. coli bacteria with an inhibition zone diameter of 0 mm. Different results in gram positives, Sumbawa white honey propolis was able to inhibit the growth of S. epidermidis and S. aureus. However, Sumbawa white honey propolis against both gram-positive bacteria was in the weak category compared to the positive control. This is because all the Sumbawa white honey propolis concentration series have an inhibitory zone diameter of ≤ 5 mm.

Abstract

Odontological examination is a primary identification method that is especially crucial in cases involving severely damaged, decomposed, or burned bodies where other identification techniques such as fingerprints or DNA are not applicable. Therefore, the inclusion of complete and accurate dental examination findings in the Visum et Repertum is essential to ensure the validity of victim identification and to strengthen the evidentiary value in legal proceedings. This study aims to determine the extent of the implementation of national standards in forensic odontology examinations at the Bhayangkara Hospital, NTB during 2022. The method used is descriptive observational with a cross-sectional approach, using secondary data from Visum et Repertum (VeR) letters. The results showed that out of 13 cases, only five cases (38.5%) met the national standards completely, while the rest were incomplete or there was no recording at all. In conclusion, there is still a discrepancy between the implementation and recording of odontology examinations with applicable standards.

Abstract

Pseudomonas aeruginosais a major antibiotic-resistant pathogen frequently associated with hospital-acquired infections posing significant treatment challenges. This study aimed to evaluate the antibacterial activity of the ethyl acetate fraction of green tea (Camellia sinensis L.) enriched with vitamin C against Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The ethyl acetate fraction obtained from 96% ethanol maceration was tested at concentrations of 12,5-200 mg/mL both with and without vitamin C using the disk diffusion method and compared to aztreonam as a positive control. Results showed that vitamin C enrichment increased the inhibition zone from 12,5 mm to 13,8 mm at 200 mg/mL, while aztreonam produced the largest inhibition zone at 20,17 mm. The vitamin C-enriched formulation also maintened antibacterical activity more effectively over a 5-15 day storage period. Vitamin C is believed to stabilize the primary antimicrobial compound epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) by preventing its oxidation. These findings support the potential of vitamin C-enriched green tea extract as an adjunctive therapy against Pseudomonas aeruginosa infections. Further development of topical or systemic formulations is recommended for managing resistant bacterial infections.

Abstract

Due to their high mortality and morbidity rates, E. coli infections are a serious issue. Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) is a result of this indiscriminate antibiotic use. One approach to address this issue is to utilize natural antimicrobials such as Sumbawa white honey. Sumbawa white honey contains antibacterial components like glucose and fructose (80%), water (17%), polyphenols, and hydrogen peroxide. This study aimed to analyze the antibacterial activity of white honey from Sumbawa against E. coli ATCC 25922. The research method employed was a laboratory experiment using a post test only control group design. Antibacterial testing was conducted using disc diffusion at concentrations of 25%, 75%, and 100%, with chloramphenicol as positive control and DMSO as negative control, and honey processing involved dilution. Antibacterial tests were repeated five times  and antibacterial activity was observed based on the diameter of inhibition zones around the disc. The outcomes showed that there was a restraint zone at 100 percent grouping of honey, to be specific 0.90 mm, while at 25% and 75% fixations there were no hindrance zones. According to the findings of this study, white honey from Sumbawa has a low antibacterial activity (0.90 mm), but this activity is ineffective against E. coli ATCC 25922. Further identification of the chemical components in Sumbawa white honey that are primarily responsible its antibacterial effect.

Abstract

Anemia remains a chronic nutritional problem in Indonesia, with a relatively high prevalence. According to the 2013 Riskesdas survey, the prevalence of anemia among adolescents aged 15-24 years in Indonesia was 18.4%, which increased to 32% in subsequent years. This means that 3-4 out of 10 adolescents suffer from anemia. Research on the benefits of iron supplementation to reduce the incidence of anemia by increasing hemoglobin levels in adolescent girls has been conducted in several regions in Indonesia. However, similar studies are still rare in NTB, particularly in Mataram City. This study aims to assess the effectiveness of iron supplementation in increasing the hemoglobin levels of adolescent girls in Mataram City. This study is a quasi-experimental research with a one-group pretest and posttest design. The results showed that at the pretest, 58 samples (96.67%) had normal hemoglobin levels, while 2 people (3.33%) had mild anemia. At the posttest, 57 people (95%) had normal hemoglobin levels, 2 people (3.33%) had mild anemia, and 1 person (1.67%) had moderate anemia. The average hemoglobin level at the pretest was 14.47 mg/dl and increased to 14.75 mg/dl six weeks later (posttest). There was no significant difference in hemoglobin levels between the pretest and posttest, with a p-value of 0.210 (p > 0.05).

Abstract

Bacillus megaterium is a bacteria that causes human infections, causing keratitis, skin infections, brain abscesses and tissue infections. Treatment often uses chemical antibiotics. However, long-term antibiotics can cause new health problems such as resistance. Therefore, antibacterial ingredients are needed that can not only inhibit the growth of bacteria but also do not have a negative impact on health such as honey. Honey is thick, it can cure various diseases such as gastrointestinal, stomach, skin diseases, acute respiratory infections and coughs. This research aims to determine the ability of Sumbawa white honey as an antibacterial against B. megaterium. The method used in this research is paper disc diffusion. There were five treatments used in this study, between 100%, 75% and 25% honey concentrations, DMSO negative control and chloramphenicol positive control with five replications each. The results of the antibacterial activity test showed that the 100% concentration had an inhibitory zone diameter of 2.59 mm, then the 75% concentration was 1.46 while the 25% concentration was 0 mm. When compared with positive control, white honey was lower antibacterial. If it is in the white honey category, the inhibition zone category is included in the lower category.
