Abstract

One of the influential factors that could affect students' writing skill is verbal creativity (VC). As an attempt to promote VC in EFL writing, two learning models i.e. cooperative learning and problem-based learning are incorporated and modified. This study was aimed at: (1) describing the structure of the framework of Co-PBL in order to promote VC in EFL writing; and (2) evaluating the feasibility of the framework of Co-PBL in EFL writing class. To achieve the goals of this study, a descriptive explanatory research was applied. It involves the EFL writing teachers and the first and second-grade students of English Education Department of a private university in East Java, Indonesia. The data were gathered through Focus Group Discussion (FGD), observation, semi-structured interview, and questionnaire. Incorporating cooperative learning (CL) and problem-based learning (PBL) results in the Co-PBL framework to guide the students through PBL cycles based on CL principles. The Co-PBL framework was also modified by inserting learning activities which could promote VC in EFL writing in each phase or cycle of PBL. Further, it was also confirmed that the Co-PBL framework is feasible to be implemented in EFL writing class. These findings, then, might have significant implications for EFL writing teachers and students.

Abstract

This research aimed at investigating the use of Grammarly software and in what terms it was more effective in reducing students’ errors in EFL writing compared to teacher corrective feedback (indirect corrective feedback). This research used the quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental design. There were 40 university students from English Education Study Program of a private university in Indonesia who were selected and randomized clustered into two; experimental and control groups. The students were tested at the beginning and the end of the research. The quantitative data were analyzed by using t-test formula. The results of the research confirm that the students whose work is evaluated by using Grammarly have a significant reduction in their errors compared to those whose work is evaluated by the teacher (indirect corrective feedback). The software is shown to be more effective to reduce the errors in terms of vocabulary usages (diction), language use (grammar), and mechanics of writing (spelling and punctuation). However, it is less effective to improve the content and organization of students’ EFL writing. This research can suggest EFL/ESL teachers with an alternative assessment for students’ writing that supports an autonomous learning environment.

Abstract

Pre-service English teachers (here: PETs) play a critical role in the development of students’ academic knowledge, technical skills, social values, and individual personalities, as well as their ability to digest teaching materials properly. Considering what is known as the pedagogical competence of pre-service English teachers is an important part of this process. This study aimed at evaluating the pre-service English teachers’ pedagogical competence in the classroom while instructing pupils in the English language. This study employed a qualitative research approach, especially a case study method with five Indonesian pre-service English teachers who participated in a teaching internship program (TIP) to collect information. The researchers used a range of approaches to acquire information from the perspectives of the student-teachers. These methods included questionnaires, observations, and observation notes. During the data analysis phase, the researchers used data reduction, data visualization, conclusion writing, and verification to help them make sense of their findings. In addition, the triangulation procedure was used to examine and validate the information gathered from the participants throughout the research phase of the investigation. According to the results of this research, pre-service English teachers' pedagogical competence was good, with an average score of 3.33 out of 5 on the pedagogical competence score (67 percent). Pre-service English teachers will benefit from reflection-based instruction and extended teaching practice under the supervision of experienced instructors in English Language Teaching (ELT) practices.

Abstract

There are strong shreds of evidence that the choice of instructional materials has large effects on students’ achievement. This study was to assess the efficacy of using ELT research papers as authentic materials in teaching research-based article writing. This study was aimed at revealing whether or not there is a significant difference in students’ writing skill in terms of ELT research paper writing between the students who were taught by using ELT research papers as authentic materials and those who were taught by using textbook materials provided by the faculty. This study belongs to a quasi-experimental study with an experimental and control group pretest-posttest design. The population of this study was 75 students from the fourth semester of English Education Study Program of IKIP PGRI Bojonegoro, East Java, Indonesia. The sample was selected through cluster random sampling and consisted of 50 students that were divided into two groups. The instrument used to collect the data was a writing test. Consequently, normality and homogeneity of the data were tested. A t-test was used to compare the mean of the two groups. The hypothesis was designed and tested at 0.05 level of significance. The results revealed that there is a significant difference in students’ academic writing skill between the students who were taught by using the ELT research papers as authentic materials and those who were taught by using textbook materials. The t-test revealed that t-value is higher than t-table (6.07>2.01). Therefore it is concluded that the authentic instructional materials could significantly improve students’ academic writing skill.

Abstract

The Partner of this activity was SDN Pilang Kanor District Bojonegoro District. The majority of Pilang villagers work as farmers. From the agricultural production, they produce abundant organic waste. In addition, the organic waste is also produced from household kitchens and schools. Remnants of the processed food from the kitchen and food scraps from schools also contribute to the increasing amount of organic waste. Organic waste that accumulates will certainly have a negative impact on public health. Stacking of the organic waste can be avoided by reprocessing it; for example, organic waste can be reused into compost. The purpose of this activity was to provide training to the partners (SDN Pilang students) to make takakura basket (Takakura Home Method) as a medium to process organic waste into compost. This training was conducted for 1 (one) day with three main steps, i.e. preparation, implementation, and evaluation. However, the results and sustainability of the activities were monitored for approximately 2 (two) weeks. The group of students was given guidance by the university students related to the sustainability of composting through the takakura basket. The result of the activity shows that the partners of this activity are able to make takakura baskets and apply them to process of organic waste around the school environment. In addition, students' awareness of the utilization of organic waste in the surrounding environment is increasing. Keywords: compost, organic waste, Takakura baskets ABSTRAK Mitra dari kegiatan ini adalah SDN Pilang Kecamatan Kanor Kabupaten Bojonegoro. Mayoritas masyarakat desa Pilang bekerja sebagai petani. Dari hasil pertanian, mereka menghasilkan sampah organik yang melimpah.
