Abstract

The dynamics of intercultural communication and language acquisition are very important in Islamic schools, where English language learning intersects with the formation of students' Islamic identity. This study aims to analyze the intercultural dynamics in English language learning in Islamic schools and its impact on the construction of students' Islamic identity in a pluralistic cultural context. This study uses a qualitative approach with a case study method. The subjects of this study were students in grades X, XI, and XII in four selected schools, as well as English teachers who teach in these classes. Then, for in-depth interviews, subjects were selected purposively. The data for this study were collected through in-depth interviews and questionnaires. The research data were analyzed using thematic analysis. The results of the thematic analysis of the data indicate that students face significant intercultural challenges, including linguistic barriers, cultural misunderstandings, and limited exposure to English outside the classroom. These challenges often create tensions as students try to balance the pressure to adopt a global identity and maintain their local cultural and religious values. The findings of this study indicate that although most students considered the impact of English language learning on their Islamic identity to be neutral (having neither positive nor negative effects), a number of students experienced positive reinforcement or potential conflict in their identity construction.

Abstract

The Teaching Internship Program is designed to prepare prospective teachers for the world of work, but participants still face many challenges. This study aims to analyze the challenges and opportunities pre-service English language education student teachers face during the Teaching Internship Program in secondary schools in Indonesia. The study used a qualitative approach with a case study method, and data was collected through semi-structured interviews and reflective journals. The analysis was carried out through an inductive process in three phases: open coding (identifying and categorizing themes), axial coding (exploring relationships between themes), and selective coding (highlighting relevant themes for further discussion). The findings showed that participants faced several challenges during the PPL, especially in classroom management, effective delivery of subject matter, and handling non-teaching tasks. The experiences of pre-service English language education teachers in the Teaching Internship Program (TIP) varied greatly, influenced by individual factors, institutions, and the school environment where they were interned. The implications of this study indicate the need to improve the quality of the Teaching Internship Program (TIP) to maximize participants' learning experience. The research results underline the importance of the role of mentors in providing practical guidance, so educational institutions and partner schools need to develop training programs for mentors to ensure they have adequate mentoring skills.

Abstract

The research observed the gap in understanding how English Language Teaching (ELT) materials in Indonesian primary schools promoted religious moderation and fostered values such as tolerance and respect for diversity. Utilizing a narrative case study approach, it examined the role of ELT materials in advancing religious moderation. Through an analysis of ELT textbooks and supplementary resources, the research evaluated the representation of religious moderation themes and explored teachers’ perceptions and use of these materials in their classrooms. The research contributed to the broader discourse on education’s role in fostering peace and tolerance, providing insights for policymakers, educators, and curriculum developers. Applying a qualitative narrative case study design, the research captured the experiences of English language teachers from three primary schools in diverse settings in Pekalongan, Central Java, Indonesia. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, document analysis, and classroom observations, with validation techniques such as triangulation and member checking ensuring credibility. Thematic analysis was used to systematically analyze the data. Findings reveal both the potential and limitations of ELT materials in promoting religious moderation. While textbooks feature characters from diverse cultural and religious backgrounds, they often lack explicit integration of religious moderation values, focusing more on language skills. Teachers address these gaps with supplementary strategies, including additional stories, activities, and discussions that emphasize religious diversity and interfaith tolerance. The research highlights the need for curriculum developers to prioritize religious moderation in educational materials and for policymakers to support professional development initiatives for teachers. Implementing these recommendations can better equip students with values essential for fostering a harmonious and inclusive society.

Abstract

Arabic textbooks function as language learning tools and vehicles for instilling nationalist values. This study uses content analysis to examine three Arabic textbooks the Ministry of Religious Affairs endorsed, focusing on representations of nationalism, symbols, and directives within Arabic and local cultural contexts. The findings reveal that the textbooks emphasize fundamental values of nationalism, including patriotism, tolerance, fraternity, and environmental care. Verbal representations highlight a love for Indonesia and religious understanding, while visual representations, such as historical structures and natural scenery, reinforce patriotism, unity, cultural appreciation, and environmental stewardship. Through Arabic language education, students are encouraged to embrace their national identity, foster cross-cultural understanding, and contribute positively to Indonesian society. This study underscores the role of Arabic textbooks in promoting nationalist values and shaping responsible citizens committed to Indonesia's progress and well-being.

Abstract

This study is the initial part for developing cooperative problem-based learning (hereafter Co-PBL) to promote verbal creativity in EFL writing. The study is aimed at: (1) investigating the previous teaching and learning model implemented in EFL writing class; and (2) measuring and analyzing the extent to which the teachers and students need Co-PBL to promote verbal creativity (hereafter VC) in EFL writing. This study employed a case study method with the respondents of the research were 2 EFL writing teachers and the students who take EFL writing course in English Education Department of a private university in East Java, Indonesia. The data was yielded from questionnaire, in-depth interview, observation, and document analysis. After analyzing the data descriptively, the results show that teachers have used to implement cooperative learning and problem-based learning in EFL writing class; however, they never try to integrate the two models as a new one. It was also revealed that they did not notice verbal creativity as an affecting factor in EFL writing due to their insufficient knowledge to develop learning model that can promote verbal creativity. This study also reveals that teachers and students are eager to develop and implement Co-PBL in order to promote students’ verbal creativity in EFL writing. The findings of this study might have implication for EFL writing teachers and learners.

Abstract

The study concentrated on the opinions and experiences of second-year students enrolled in a writing course that emphasizes media literacy. A case study design is appropriate for this research as it allows for an in-depth exploration of the effects of media literacy-based activities on EFL writing skills within a specific context. Questionnaires on media attitudes and how it affects their writing skills were used to collect data. According to the findings, most students thought that the media literacy exercises improved their ability to think critically, comprehend media messages, and communicate effectively in English. The present study thus underscores the need to embed media literacy into the EFL curriculum to enhance critical thinking among learners and to improve their writing competence. Further research is welcome to help refine these pedagogical strategies and resolve contextual challenges for the best learning outcomes.

Abstract

This study aims to develop interactive learning media based on PowerPoint in Indonesian language learning at MI Salafiyah 1 Kauman. The background of this study is the lack of interactive and interesting learning media in elementary schools, especially in Indonesian language subjects. This study uses the Research and Development (R&D) method with the development of the ADDIE (Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, Evaluation) model. The media developed contains learning materials, animations, practice questions, and automatic feedback to increase student participation and understanding. The results of the validation test by media experts and material experts show that this media is very suitable for use in learning. Limited trials conducted on students showed an increase in interest, active involvement, and student learning outcomes after using the media. In addition, students feel more motivated and find it easier to understand the material because of the attractive and interactive visual display. Thus, this interactive learning media based on PowerPoint can be an alternative to support a more interesting, enjoyable, and effective learning process in the classroom, especially for elementary school level.
