Abstract

This study explores the role of productive zakat in fostering sustainable economic empowerment among coastal communities, using the Cak Kaji Program implemented by the National Board of Zakat (BAZNAS) in Gresik, Indonesia. The research examines how zakat, as a core instrument in Islamic economics, can transcend traditional charitable functions and contribute to long-term socioeconomic development. The result is the empowerment through several programs, namely rolling livestock, micro finance and rombong assistance for small seller. This study it can be concluded that the community empowerment program through the distribution of productive zakat carried out by Baznas Gresik is already good, where Baznas Gresik has provided alternative livelihoods, capital access, technology access, markets access, and the collective action development. But there is something that needs to be improved in alternative livelihoods and access to markets. Baznas Gresik needs to add types of empowerment programs so that there are more choices for mustahiq businesses and create a market for the results of mustahiq businesses so that they can be well absorbed by consumers. The study contributes to the broader discourse on the operationalization of Islamic economic principles in contemporary development frameworks, offering insights for policymakers, zakat institutions, and development practitioners worldwide.

Abstract

This quantitative study investigates the impact of QRIS financial literacy and e-wallet promotions on the cashless society phenomenon, while also exploring its social-religious implications through the lens of Maslahah. Using a mixed-method approach, the study collected data from East Java residents who had used QRIS or e-wallets at least once, through accidental sampling. Quantitative data were analyzed using SmartPLS 3.0, complemented by qualitative interviews. The results show that QRIS financial literacy has no significant effect on the growth of the cashless society. Although literacy levels are increasing, they are not consistently followed by QRIS usage due to the availability of diverse non-cash alternatives. In contrast, e-wallet promotions have a significant and positive influence on cashless behavior. Respondents are more likely to adopt e-wallets due to attractive promotions and the influence of their social environment. From a Maslahah perspective, the cashless society has the potential to deliver social and economic benefit but also poses risks—particularly if it fuels impulsive, non-beneficial consumption. Maslahah serves as a guiding framework, encouraging the cashless movement to align with values that promote communal well-being and ethical financial behavior. This study recommends that Bank Indonesia intensify financial education on QRIS to boost adoption. Meanwhile, e-wallet platforms should continue offering positive promotional strategies to enhance user engagement while aligning with Maslahah principles to ensure responsible usage.

Data analysis was carried out by deducing theoretical propositions regarding the implementation of Islamic entrepreneurship in the hijrah community and developing them inductively to describe new findings and propositions. Based on the research results, it was found that the hijrah community implemented Islamic entrepreneurship in various identities, namely salaf-preneurship in the KPMI community, ideo-preneurship in the Assalim community, and spiritual-preneurship in the PBI community. The implication of this research is the development of Islamic entrepreneurship theory, which can be implemented widely by society.

Abstract

The rapid growth of the halal fashion industry raises concerns about the environment, particularly regarding textile waste, which contradicts the principles of sustainability in Islam. This study aims to analyze the role of the circular economy in waste reduction within the halal fashion industry from the perspective of Maqashid Syariah. Employing the Systematic Literature Review (SLR) method, this research examines previous studies focused on the application of the circular economy in the halal fashion sector. The findings indicate that circular economy principles, such as reuse, recycling, and extending product life, significantly contribute to waste reduction and align with Maqashid Syariah, particularly in preserving wealth (hifz al-mal) and the environment (hifz al-biah). The study concludes that integrating the circular economy with the principles of Islamic economics promotes a more sustainable and competitive halal fashion industry. A key implication of this research is the necessity for collaboration among policymakers, industry stakeholders, and consumers to establish regulations and practices that foster a sustainable halal fashion business ecosystem.

Abstract

This research examines the role of the Socio-Physical and Spiritual Environments (SPaSE) Model in developing religious moderation. PLS-SEM (Partial Least Square- Structural Equational Models) was used for this study to create a Social, Physical, and Spiritual Environments (SPaSE) Model for developing attitudes toward religious moderation. SEM is used in statistical techniques that measure the strength of the hypothetical relationship between variables in a model as a structure with many dependent variables. This research found that the SPaSE model represents a holistic madrasa environment with mutual relationships. In a social space, a transfer of values instills attitudes to being a good citizen. A positive social environment can promote students' social and emotional learning development to prevent intolerant behavior. Prevention may involve the physical environment, namely learning facilities, which become information about attitudes, values, and ethics in Islam compatible with a pluralistic society and prevent extremism and radicalism. The spiritual environment, as mediation and legitimacy, influences the worldview of a large group of people. This research concludes that the social, physical, and spiritual environment is significantly related to religious moderation attitudes in madrasas. The SPaSE model illustrates that students can gain specific meanings and identities through social interaction assisted by the values of religious moderation. The values of religious moderation that originate from Islam are the doctrines or teachings of Islam as a spiritual environment that is accustomed through social interaction and learning facilities. The SPaSE model is very important in madrasahs because it can promote attitudes and perspectives of religious moderation in madrasahs.

Abstract

This study explores the concept of Dinar and Dirham, their use during the Prophet's era as mediums of exchange, evaluates their strengths and weaknesses, and analyzes their potential as international currencies to address currency crises and inflation. A qualitative method is employed in this study, involving the collection and analysis of data from various literary sources through a descriptive analysis approach. The research findings reveal that Dinar and Dirham, although adopted from Roman and Persian cultures, were chosen due to the robust stability provided by gold as the underlying value of Dinar. However, the use of Dinar and Dirham cannot directly serve as an alternative to address the economic problems caused by currencies. Limited gold supply and vulnerability to criminal misuse are key drawbacks of Dinar and Dirham. Moreover, economic issues and crises stem not only from currency problems but also from various other contributing factors. Nevertheless, the reintroduction of the concept of Dinar and Dirham as relevant currencies to address modern currency crises is still worth considering. With a clear understanding of their strengths and weaknesses, and careful management of related issues, Dinar and Dirham have the potential to help address today's global currency crises and inflation.

Abstract

One can interpret the hijra community's economic impact in Indonesia as both beneficial and detrimental. The purpose of this paper is to elucidate the typology of the Indonesian Islamic entrepreneurial movement and the hijrah community movement's compromise model for economic rules. Observations at community business locations, interviews with entrepreneurs in 10 communities, documentation in the form of brochures, photos of activities, and information on Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp groups were used in the research, which followed a case study methodology. Three of the 22 informants who were thoroughly questioned were expert informants. The regions of origin of the informants included Java, Sumatra, Bali, NTB, Sulawesi, and Kalimantan. To generate fresh hypotheses, data were examined using theoretical PPIM and Carter and Banker's hijra community typology propositions. The study's findings demonstrate the political conservatism of the hijra community's Islamic economic movement. Specifically, the dominant economic system, the Islamic economic movement, aims to replace conventional or ribawi economics, or is portrayed as such in the dual system notion.
