Abstract

Old age is a natural process that cannot be avoided. It runs continuously and continuously—the elderly experience physiological, biological, psychological, and social setbacks and sleeps pattern disturbances. Insomnia prevalence in Indonesia 2016 in the elderly is relatively high, 67%. Management methods that aim to improve the sleep quality of the elderly in general are by using pharmacology. However, excessive use of drugs will impact the health of the elderly. Thus, an effective and safe non-pharmacological therapy is needed to improve the quality of sleep in the elderly, one of which is the Benson Relaxation Technique. This therapy is a relaxation therapy that involves religious therapy, was at this time, the elderly tend to be closer to God. This relaxation technique was chosen to increase the patient's spiritual activity in dealing with discomfort problems, including sleep disturbances. The method chosen for this community service activity was the method of lectures, counselling, demonstrations, training, and discussions with the elderly as patients and their nurses for repetition in the following days. Evaluation of activities was carried out two months later by asking the nurse to record the sleep quality of the elderly. The training was able to increase the knowledge of patients and their caregivers about the Benson Relaxation Technique to treat sleep disorders in the elderly at the Nursing Home of Wisma Cinta Kasih.

Abstract

Adolescents are exposed to a variety of stressors during the challenging adolescent transition phase. Nowadays, adolescents are more susceptible to mental health issues, which are reportedly becoming more prevalent globally. Involve schools in initiatives to address adolescent mental health to raise teenage understanding and awareness. Adolescents' mental health status can be assessed by mental health screening and education, and mental health education can help them know more about their mental health. This activity aims to expand students' awareness of mental health issues at public junior high schools in Padang. The IDASS-Y adolescent health self-reporting instrument was used to implement the intervention. The dissemination of information about adolescents' mental health issues and strategies for preventing them served as the basis for educational initiatives. According to the activity's findings, 25 students in Junior High School had mild depression (92.6%), one who had moderate depression (3.7%), and one who had severe depression (3.7%). The prevalence of anxiety among SMPN 23 students was 25 mildly anxious individuals (92.6%) and two moderately anxious individuals (7.4%). Twenty participants (74.1%) reported light stress, six (22.2%) reported moderate stress, and one (3.7%) reported severe stress. The knowledge score has improved before and during mental health education—the importance of involving schools in mental health management, including education and screening.

Abstract

Adolescents face various risk factors that increase vulnerability to their mental health. The purpose of this activity is to train and empower adolescent mental health cadres at SMPN 23 Padang to recognize and resolve mental health problems independently. The methods used include socialization, counseling, and workshops on the implementation of the School Mental Health Unit program with a focus on preventing mental health problems and deviant behavior. The partners of this activity were teachers and the UKS team of SMPN 23 Padang, who were selected as mental health cadres. The results showed a significant increase in skills; whereas before the training, only 41.7% of cadres were skilled in conducting mental health screening, while after the training, it reached 100%. This activity proves that involving adolescents in solving mental health problems can significantly improve their skills.
