Abstract

Shi‘r jāhilī, which mainstream commentators use as a reference for Qur’anic interpretation, has drawn criticism. One of the criticisms was made by Ṭāhā Ḥusayn, who considered it irrelevant for the source of interpretation as it was created by the later Muslim community, not the pre-Islamic poets, during the caliphate period with various interests. He used Descartes’ method of philosophical skepticism to propose his critique. However at the practical level, Ḥusayn seems inconsistent in applying the method. This paper attempts to reveal the inconsistencies of Ḥusayn’s application on philosophical skepticism and to describe some of the criticisms of Muslim scholars toward his idea. Using content analysis, this paper argues that Ḥusayn does not apply philosophical analysis as like Descartes, who uses intuition and deduction in detailed manner. Unlike Descartes, who uses doubt as a method of finding the truth, Ḥusayn makes doubt as the objective. Meanwhile, the Muslim scholars reproach Ḥusayn’s lack of objectivity in his study that leads to numerous deficient argument.

Abstract

This study will discuss the ambiguity of the Majelis Tafsir al-Qur'an (MTA) as a missionary organization trying to explore the sacred heirlooms in the form of Islamic law or trying to purify Islamic law, by making MTA interpretations as a reference for their da'wah, in the introduction to their interpretation they will not using the hadith daif, the history of Israel as a reference. However, in reality, they are precisely inconsistent with the principles of the teachings of making the Old Testament as the source of their interpretation. This research is a library research that seeks to explore and explore the interpretations carried out by MTA. Through al-Dhakhil's approach as a study of the theory of criticism of puritan ideological interpretation, it was found that the interpretation of MTA which became the reference of his da'wah, was inconsistent between statements and practice and made the old treaty as a reference in his interpretation and equated with Torah, even though the two were different.

Abstract

ABSTACTPenelitian ini membahas mengenai sighnifikansi ayat tentang konsep demokrasi di Indonesia dalam QS. Al-Imra>n ayat 159 dengan melalui pendekatan pembacaan kontekstual Nas}r Hamid Abu Zayd. Cara kerja pendekatan tersebut yaitu lebih menekankan pada asba>b al-nuzul dengan melihat permasalahan dari sudut pandang yang lebih luas, yaitu dengan leseluruhan konteks sosial-historis (mujmal al-siya>q al-tarikh al-ijtima’i) turunnya wahyu. Di sisi lain juga membuat perbedaan antara makna historis (al-dala>la>t al-tarikhiyyat) yang diperoleh dari suatu konteks pada satu sisi serta sighnifikansi (al-maghza) yang di indikasikan oleh makna dalam konteks sosio-historis penafsiran pada sisi yang lain. Karenanya, dengan menggunakan pendekatan ini peneliti mengharapkan dapat mengetahui sighnifikansi mengenai konsep demokrasi dalam ayat tersebut, sebab mengingat bahwa inti daripada ayatnya hanya berbicara mengenai syura, sementara kata demokrasi sendiri tidak disebut secara ekplisit. Pada kesimpulannya, konsep syura yang terdapat dalam ayat tersebut memiki relasi dengan konsep demokrasi, meskipun secara historis ayat tersebut kaitannya erat dengan peristiwa perang badar, tetapi implikasinya terhadap pemerintahan memiliki posisi daan peran yang utama dan terpenting seperti perihal strategi dalam sebuah pemerintahan untuk kemaslahatan umat (musyawarah).Kata Kunci: Sighnifikansi, Konsep Demokrasi, Pembacaan Kontekstual, Nas}r Hamid Abu Zayd.

Abstract

Tafsir lughawi menjelaskan kitab suci alqur’an melalui interpretasi semiotic dan semantic yang meliputi etimologis, morfologis, leksikal, gramatikal dan retorikal. Tafsir lughawi ini merupakan salah satu corak yang dilakukan oleh mufassir untuk menjelaskan ayat-ayat alqur’an.Karena alqur’an mempunyai gaya bahasa yang sangat tinggi, maka yang akan menafsirkan dengan corak ini harus memiliki kapasitas tertentu. Tafsir lughawi ini sudah mulai muncul pada abad kedua dan ketiga hijriyah. Munculnya cara menafsirkan alqur’an dengan bahasan corak kebahasaan ini disebabkan karena terjadi integrasi antara bangsa Arab dan non Arab. Kerangka operasional untuk menjelaskan tafsir lughawi ini adalah dengan mengemukakan maksud di bidang ilmu nahwu, sharaf, balaghah dengan macam-macam dan bagian masing-masing. Kajian tafsir terus berkembang seiring dengan perkembangan zaman. Untuk menghasilkan pemahaman yang lebih utuh dan komprehensif tentunya diperlukan suatu metode atau cara tertentu dalam menafsirkan al-Quran. Sedangkan metode yang digunakan untuk menafsirkan al-Quran itu terbagi empat metode tahlili, ijmali, muqaran, dan metode maudhu’i. Sedangkan dilihat dari sumber pangambilan tafsirnya terbagi menjadi dua tafsir secara bi al-matsur dan tafsir secara bi al-ra’yi. Begitu pula warna corak tafsir secar garis besar dibagi menjadi llima corak ilmi, fiqhi, sufi, Falsafi, dan adabi wa ijtimai.

Abstract

Contention of discourse does dominate the feature of our modern public space. But contention of value, while it is subtle and may not be discernable, is more essential. What appears at the surface is actually the result of what happens within. This paper discusses the problem of value contention in the public space, particularly by giving attention to the way that Sufism’s value may be involved in it. It brings forward multiple premises. On the one hand, it argues against the Western proposition that public space, especially in its rational and critical form, can only emerge in the Western setting. On the other, it problematizes the so-called Islamic public space that, while it is rational and critical, becomes a battlefield like a sphere to which religious values fall victim. In this whole situation -the paper argues- Sufi strategy to stay away from public space while at the same time making an internal consolidation to preserve its ontological security, is the proper way. Sufism itself became a victim of the free public space when it is involved directly in it, especially where secularism and liberalism prevail. Various new forms of Sufism, such as neo-sufism, hybrid-sufism, urban-sufism, and the like, are not expression of its ability to adapt to new situation but a manifestation of its failure to preserve its essence.

Abstract

Reconstructing the Meaning of Polygamy in the Context of Gender Relations Study of Surah an-Nisā’ [4]: 3 Using the  Ma‘nā-Cum-Maghzā Approach. This article aims to reconstruct the meaning of polygamy in Surah an-Nisā’ verse 3 within the context of gender relations. To achieve this goal, this research employs a deconstructive paradigm using a hermeneutical approach, ma‘na-cum-maghzā method by Sahiron Syamsuddin, and feminist theory as analytical tools. The study yields two main findings: (1.) Universally, the primary message (maghzā) contained in Surah an-Nisā’ verse 3 emphasizes the importance of gender justice for women. Thus, in a broader context, the maghzā of this verse rejects any actions that subordinate and negate women’s rights, Thus, from here, this research aligns with the opinion of Muhammad Irsad.; (2.) When the universal moral value of Surah an-Nisā’ verse 3, stating the importance of gender justice, is recontextualized into the specific context of polygamy, this research aligns with the view that the primary directive in this verse is monogamy accompanied by efforts to build a harmonious and quality Islamic family. Polygamy, on the other hand, can only be practiced under highly specific and urgent conditions. Additionally, this study rejects actions that use this verse as a legitimization for patriarchal views that tend to relegate women to a secondary class in society.

Abstract

Surah Al-Maidah is the fifth surah in the Qur'an, consisting of 120 verses, and is mostly classified as a Madaniyah surah, though some verses were revealed in Makkah. This surah is known as Al-Maidah because it contains verses discussing the feast requested by the followers of Prophet Isa (verses 112-115). Additionally, it is known by other names such as Al-Uqud (the covenants), Al-Akhyar (the good people), and Al-Munqidzah (the savior). The Asbabun Nuzul (occasions of revelation) of verse 38 of Surah Al-Maidah involves two main stories: the story of a Makhzumiyah woman who stole and the story of Tu’mah bin Ubairiq who stole a coat of armor belonging to Qatadah Ibn Nu’man. This verse was revealed to establish the law of hand amputation for thieves. The contextualization of this punishment in modern times indicates that it has specific criteria, such as the value of the stolen goods and the place from which they were taken. In Indonesia, this punishment has not been implemented despite the majority of the population being Muslim. Discussions about the implementation of hand amputation in Indonesia consider various social and cultural aspects to maintain national unity and cohesion. Asbabun Nuzul dari ayat 38 Surah Al-Maidah melibatkan dua cerita utama: kisah seorang wanita Makhzumiyah yang mencuri dan kisah Tu’mah bin Ubairiq yang mencuri baju perang milik Qatadah Ibn Nu’man. Ayat ini diturunkan untuk menetapkan hukum potong tangan bagi pencuri. Kontekstualisasi hukum potong tangan dalam zaman modern menunjukkan bahwa hukuman ini memiliki kriteria tertentu, seperti kadar barang yang dicuri dan tempat barang tersebut diambil. Di Indonesia, penerapan hukum ini belum dilakukan meskipun mayoritas penduduknya beragama Islam. Diskusi tentang penerapan hukum potong tangan di Indonesia mempertimbangkan berbagai aspek sosial dan budaya untuk menjaga persatuan dan kesatuan bangsa.

Abstract

This article aims to provide an overview to all interested parties regarding how mufassir understand and interpret the verses of the Koran regarding the hijab or covering of the private parts for women. Apart from that, this article also displays the views of the mufassir in understanding this problem. The verses of the Qur'an were revealed to be practiced with all their fadhilah and goodness, including the obligation to cover their private parts for women, which is intended to provide security and comfort for them and the people around them. All the responsibilities that Allah gives to His servants are for the benefit of humans. Therefore, it is hoped that this article will provide a more comprehensive understanding of the obligations of the hijab for women, thereby encouraging a moderate attitude in understanding and practicing it, without blaming other opinions or feeling self-righteous. By expressing the mufassir's understanding of the hijab for women, women are expected to be able to choose the right option according to their needs in the Sharia corridor. In addition, this paper aims to increase public understanding of the hijab issue and reduce unnecessary debate.

Abstract

Contextual studies to understand the verses of the Qur'an are increasingly in demand by ulumul qur'an researchers today. One approach that is often applied in a Qur'anic study is Fazlur Rahman's double movement hermeneutic. This approach strongly emphasizes the socio-historical context of the revelation of the verse and also the conditions of the present oriented to the discovery of moral ideals. Thus, the purpose of the revelation will still be conveyed at any time. During this decade, the double movement hermeneutic approach has focused more on ethico-legal verses, namely verses that contain certain ethical, moral, social, and legal values. Furthermore, new interpretations are found in the form of legal products that adjust the content of the verse to the situation and conditions that are currently developing in society. In this article, several verses related to the concept of jihad will be analyzed, namely Surah al-Nisa' verse 95 and Surah al-Taubah verses 20 and 24. Of course, these verses are dissected using asba>b al-nuzu>l studies and historical studies that intersect precisely with the practice of jihad in the early days of Islam. So that a concrete moral ideal is found from these verses that war may be carried out in an emergency. When jihad cannot be diverted from the meaning of war, meaning that Muslims are forced to fight against injustice in order to defend religion, they must fulfill the codes of ethics in war. Meanwhile, from the transcendental side, the moral ideal of the verse is to get closer to Allah by maintaining continuous worship until the end of life. In addition, another moral ideal is that jihad can be achieved by spending money in the way of Allah and endeavoring and trusting solely in Him.
