Abstract

Abstract

As humans age, there is a decline in the function and physiological mechanisms of the body, which can affect quality of life. Chronic inflammation is one of the characteristics found in the aging process, marked by an increase in proinflammatory cytokines in circulation. IL-6 is one of the cytokines that play a role in chronic inflammation. This study aimed to determine serum IL-6 levels using D-galactose induction in Sprague-Dawley rats. The study used a pure experiment with a post-test only control group design, in which 36 male Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into two groups: control and treatment. The research sample was serum, and the control group received a placebo of 0.9% NaCl at a dose of 400 mg/day/kg intraperitoneally. The treatment group, which underwent aging induction, was given D-galactose at the same dose and route. The treatment was administered for 6 weeks, and serum was collected from blood taken in the 6th week. The results indicated that the administration of D-galactose did not have a significant effect on increasing IL-6 levels.

Abstract

Acne is a chronic skin disease involving inflammation of the pilosebaceous units with the main bacteria Staphylococcus epidermidis and Propionibacterium acnes has prompted the creation of cosmetic masks containing antibacterial agents. This study aims to evaluate the antibacterial activity of Lemongrass and Clove essential oils and to determine the synergistic effects of combining these essential oils in a peel-off gel mask formulation. The study was conducted using the liquid dilution method to determine the minimum inhibitory concentration and the disk diffusion method to test the inhibition zone diameter. Additionally, tests are conducted to determine the antibacterial activity against Propionibacterium acnes and Staphylococcus epidermidis, as well as to analyse the stability of the product both chemically and physically during storage. The results of the study showed that (1) the formulation containing a combination of 25% lemongrass and 18% cloves showed high inhibitory power and good stability, but caused moderate irritation; (2) lemongrass and clove essential oils were effective against Propionibacterium acnes and Staphylococcus epidermidis, but it was recommended to reduce the active ingredients to prevent potential irritation.

Abstract

Background: Aging is accompanied by a functional decline leading to the loss of independence in conducting activities of daily living. The dependence of the elderly can cause burden that affects the quality of life of caregivers. This study aimed to assess the correlation between the burden and quality of life of caregivers looking after moderately to totally dependent elderly. Methods: This research is a cross-sectional study that used Zarit Burden Interview to assess caregiver burden and World Health Organization Quality of Life to measure the quality of life of people caring for elderly with moderate to total dependence based on the scores in Activities of Daily Living and Instrumental Activities of Daily Living questionnaires. The data were analyzed using Spearman’s rank correlation test. Results: A total of 30 caregivers participated in this study. Significant negative correlations were observed between the burden and quality of life of caregivers of elderly with moderate to total dependence in all four domains: physical (p = 0.001), psychological (p < 0.001), social relationships (p = 0.028), and environmental (p < 0.001). Conclusions: The findings imply that the burden of caring for the elderly with moderate to total dependence may affect the caregivers’ burden and quality of life in all domains.
