Abstract

The different cultures, power distance could be the obstacle in intercultural communication. The aim of this research to identify the types of Cross-Cultural Communication Style Choice between British and American in the Leap Year movie. The researchers attempt to reveal kinds of Cross-Cultural Communication Style Choice between Declan as British and Anna as American for three days. This Qualitative research method analyses data of utterances and are classified into four types of Cross-Cultural Communication Style Choice. The result shows that there are 356 utterances of Anna and Declan. for three days. Anna has 204 utterances with 44,3 % direct style and indirect 5,8 %.. Declan uses 155 utterance with 37 % and 12 % indirect style. British tend to use more indirect styles in expressing their intention to save the interlocutor’s face.Meanwhile, American use direct styles to reveal their intentions as they belong to the high culture communication.Key words: across culture communication,direct style, indirectstyle

Abstract

This study aims to find out about the challenges of English teachers in teaching online English by using the EduLearning application, where the study examines what kind of challenges that the English teachers face during the online course using EduLearning application and also how do they deal with the challenges itself, There are two objectives in this study, they are 1) To know what are the challenges that English teachers face in online teaching using EduLearning application. 2) To know how do English Teachers deal with the challenges in online teaching using EduLearning at SMP Muhammadiyah 4. The researcher used data collection techniques, namely interviews and questionnaires. The interview is an online interview that was asked to three English teachers with the same questions of each, and the questionnaire was given through Google form. The first question shows that there are five challenges that were encountered by the English Teachers by using the EduLearning application, namely internet connection, media, lack of interaction between students and teachers, limited ability, and technical problems. And for the second question shows that there are four solutions, namely, school-provided computer laboratory to be used by students, the variation in teaching online, the shifting application, and the need for training.Keywords: Online teaching, EduLearning application, Challenges.

Abstract

This research aimed at analyzing translation accuray of student translation between the source language (SL) in Bahasa and target language (TL) in English and finding out the translation process used by student at Muhammadiyah University of Tangerang. The object of this research is 6th Grade Student at Muhammadiyah University of Tangerang. The researcher focuses on the accuracy of student translation results in range accurate, less accurate and inaccurate based on Accurate Translation Rate proposed by Nababan (2012). The researcher also analyzes the translation process based on Nida and Taber’s theory (1969). In conclusion, researcher found that the accuracy of translation is rated by a lecturer of English Education Study Program of Teachers Training and Education Faculty of Muhammadiyah Tangerang with the results  83,1% translations are accurate, 15,3% translations are less accurate and 1,6.% translation are inaccurate. While, the researcher found that most of translation process used by students is non sequentially process (71%), and the sequentially process is 29%.

Abstract

Teaching and learning process is a process that contains a series of actions of teachers and students based on reciprocal relationships that take place in educational situations to achieve certain goals. Nature School is one of the alternative educations that use nature as the main media for student learning. This research aimed to find out the teaching and learning process in English class at Sekolah Alam Mekar Bakti Tangerang. The research questions were: how was the teaching process in English class?; how was the learning process in English class?; what are the advantages and disadvantages of teaching and learning process in Nature School setting. Data collection techniques used by researchers are observation, documentation, and interviews. The researchers used a triangulation method. The results showed that: the teachers applied three stages (pre-instructional stage, instructional stage, and follow-up phase); students experienced three stages in their learning process (receiving information, Information storage, and recalling information); there are some advantages and disadvantages found during the teaching and learning process in Nature School setting.

Abstract

This study aims to determine whether using the Lost In Translation film media can improve student understanding in  culture and language in the sociolinguistic class and how a film with the title Lost In Translation can affect student understanding. This study uses a qualitative approach in a descriptive analytical model. The instruments or tools used by researchers in collecting data were questionnaires and documents. a questionnaire (list of statements) containing 20 statements with a Likert scale which  results will be described descriptively, in taking the assessment the researcher calculates the results of the questionnaire which is a seventh semester student of sociolinguistics class content and documents in the form of photos of several film scenes showing the existence of several cultures and languages this movie. The results of the study have shown the final score of 2158 with an average grade  of 120 which indicates that students agree that the Lost In Translation film media can affect students' understanding  and knowing the language culture in the seventh semester sociolinguistics class of the Faculty of Education and Education at Muhammadiyah University of Tangerang.

Abstract

English has become the second language after Indonesian. This situation is used by education practitioners by incorporating English into their curriculum programs, for parents, English can affect children's competitiveness. Teaching and introducing English to autistic individuals is not easy. Talking photo is a learning media that is essay to apply because it can designed by the parents themselves and the contents can be adjusted to the needs. This research was conducted with qualitative methods describing the application of talking photo in introducing English. Respondents in this study were 3 autistic individuals of pre-school age, not yet exposed to English at all and did not enter the world of education or school. English in this study is vocabulary about parts of body and activities. The results obtained after two months of intensive exposure, respondent one could pronounce and respond to 7 parts of body vocabulary words and 4 activities vocabulary; second is able to pronounce and respond to 5 parts of body vocabulary words and 5 activities vocabulary and third is able to pronounce and respond to 3 parts of body and 3 activities vocabulary. Progress of autistic individuals occurs because of the integration of stimulus and family support.Keywords: Autistic Individual, English, Talking Photo

Abstract

This study aims to determine the knowledge of parents about early childhood English learning methods. The approach in this study uses qualitative using interview methods. the results of the study showed that of the 40 parents interviewed, 38 parents could mention the method used in learning English in early childhood while 2 parents could not mention an appropriate method for learning English in early childhood. methods that fit the characteristics and development of early childhood are conversation, playing, telling stories, singing, using pictures and playing roles.Keywords: early childhood English learning, learning methods, characteristics of early childhood
