Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to describe EFL learners’ experiences while using infographics  in a reading class. The pedagogical intervention, based on the use of infographic application (Canva) as an alternative tool to help them summarize reading passages, was implemented to enhance their reading comprehension. The data were gathered from teacher’s journal, questionnaires and the results of students’ reading comprehension tests. The findings revealed that the students viewed the use of infographics could motivate and enabled them to summarize the assigned reading topics much easier. In addition, the assignments incorporating the use of infographic application encouraged them to participate actively in English reading activities in a collaborative atmosphere, allow them to develop their creativity and raise positive attitudes toward the role of technological tools in educational settings.Keywords: English reading, infographics, reading comprehension

Abstract

Abstract

The aim of the research was to investigate whether Ginger Software can be used to improve the writing skill of the tenth grade students at SMK Ki Hajar Dewantoro. The participants of this research were 64 students, which were classified into the controlled class and the experimental class. The design used was quasi-experimental study and the instruments of this research consisted of pre-test and post-test. The result showed that using Ginger Software was effective and appropriate to improve students’ writing skill. It could be seen from the average of post-test result in experimental class was 75.90, and the average of pre-test was 65.06. Meanwhile, the average of post-test result in controlled class was 66, and the average of pre-test was 59.21. The result of the t-test of post-test also showed that there was a significant difference between experimental and controlled class, t-count of ɑ = 5% df = 62 was 3.48 and for t-table was 2.00. The calculation proved that t-value was higher than t-table. It means that H1 is accepted and H0 is rejected. It can be concluded that Ginger Software gave significant effect on improving students’ writing skill.  Key words: Ginger Software, Writing Skill

Abstract

The objective of this research was to know types of students’ errors and the most common or least type of students’ error in using degrees of comparison of adjective at eight grade students of SMP Islam Ayatra. Degrees of comparison is an important element of grammar that rules how to change the form adjective to show a comparison. The research used qualitative method. The participants of this research consisted of thirty students. The source of the data in this research was collected from students’ written test in using degrees of comparison of adjective. The result of this research stated that there were four types of errors, they are omission, addition, substitution, and permutation. The total of them is 485 errors. The highest percentage type of error was substitution with 54,64% (total frequency of errors was 265). And the lowest percentage type of error was addition with 2,06% (total frequency of errors is 10).

Abstract

Teaching and learning process is a process that contains a series of actions of teachers and students based on reciprocal relationships that take place in educational situations to achieve certain goals. Nature School is one of the alternative educations that use nature as the main media for student learning. This research aimed to find out the teaching and learning process in English class at Sekolah Alam Mekar Bakti Tangerang. The research questions were: how was the teaching process in English class?; how was the learning process in English class?; what are the advantages and disadvantages of teaching and learning process in Nature School setting. Data collection techniques used by researchers are observation, documentation, and interviews. The researchers used a triangulation method. The results showed that: the teachers applied three stages (pre-instructional stage, instructional stage, and follow-up phase); students experienced three stages in their learning process (receiving information, Information storage, and recalling information); there are some advantages and disadvantages found during the teaching and learning process in Nature School setting.

Abstract

Pubic speaking is a fundamental skill in global era, since all sectors of businesses require the marketing to promote the business. This research is aimed to explain the sight words work for students public speaking skill. This qualitative approach with classroom action research design is used in this research, and the population is 3rd semester students of English department Universitas Muhammadiyah Tangerang with the total sample is 33 students. the data collection based on the 2 cycles of EFL classroom activity, and the instruments are observation, interview, and public speaking test. this result of this research shows; firstly, the sight words are effective to advocate students public speaking practice, due to the sight words are used as a media for teaching public speaking, and it enjoyable and organizable. Secondly, student’s public speaking need mode drilling with a new strategy from the instruction, and this sigh words are recommended to use. Thirdly, although sight words mostly used to teach younger students for vocabulary knowledge, but when it used for university students for speaking skill is powerful because students become enthusiastic and active during the classroom activity individually, while the instructor only need to give a clue of the sight words. Abstract

During the transition period following the Covid-19 pandemic, many education institutions around the world have implemented the integration of ICT (information and communication technology), including for English grammar online class. This research was conducted to find out students’ perceptions of the utilization of ICT for learning grammar in online settings. The subjects of this research were second semester students at Muhammadiyah University of Tangerang. The participants experienced online grammar learning by using LMS (Learning Management System); video conferencing platform; video sharing website; social media and game-based application. Researcher used questionnaires and interviews to collect data on how they perceive technology integration in grammar teaching-learning process. The findings showed that students responded positively towards the utilization of technology to facilitate English grammar teaching-learning process in online settings. Abstract

This study aimed to determine whether there is a correlation between students’ public speaking and muhadhoroh training with the title “The Correlation of Muhadhoroh Training and the Eighth Grade Students’ Public Speaking at Al-Manshuriyah Islamic Boarding School Tangerang”. The research subjects in this study were 28 eighth grade students. The research was quantitative survey method. The data instruments were tests and questionnaires. The test was used to collect data on students’ public speaking using speech test. Researchers used SPSS 25 and Ms. Excel to analyzed data. The result showed that there was significant relationship between muhadhoroh training and students’ public speaking. This could be seen from the results of a significant correlation in public speaking and muhadhoroh training  _xy = 0,897>  _t = 0,374, N = 28 with a significant value 0,05 so there is a correlation. Keywords: correlation study, public speaking, muhadhoroh training.

Abstract

In this era of the 5.0 industrial revolution, the importance of communication skills in English is becoming more pronounced, including in the field of nursing. Speaking is one of the four core skills for effective communication in the English language. The purpose of this paper is to describe nursing students’ experiences of using TikTok Application, a short-video sharing platform, as an alternative tool to help them practicing their speaking skills. The subjects of this study were 31 second-semester students of Nursing Study Program at a private University in Tangerang. The method used in this research was quasi-experimental approach with one group pretest-posttest design. The findings revealed that using the TikTok application can help students to improve their speaking skills significantly. In addition, they also gave positive responses toward using TikTok in learning English language as it could make them more relaxed and enjoyed while practicing their speaking skills.

Abstract

This paper investigated the metacognition of final semester students in completing their mini-thesis. The obstacles faced by English study program students in writing mini-thesis were assumed resulted from their lack of metacognition implementation. Metacognition is often described as knowledge and control over one’s cognitive processes. This research used mixed-method design. The instruments used were observation, interviews, and questionnaire. The subjects of this research consisted of 18 students of 8th, 9th as well as graduated students and 10 lecturers of English Study program of Universitas Muhammadiyah Tangerang. This study showed: firstly, students are quite hard to complete mini-thesis due to their strategy following the schedule is need to be pushed by their advisors. Secondly, most respondents have good metacognitive awareness, while few of eighth and ninth semester students need to improve planning, information management strategy and monitoring. Thirdly, metacognition can be the effective solution to encourage students in achieving their target.
