Language attitude is considered as the key factor that influence students’ motivation to learn and determine the results of studying a language. Therefore, the objective of this study is to find out the fourth semester students’ language attitude toward their speaking skill implemented in the classroom and the factors affecting their attitudes. The research methodology utilized a qualitative case study design. The participants of this study were six students of the fourth semester of English Education Department at Mulawarman University which were selected by using purposive sampling. The data of this research were collected through interview and were analyzed by using Thematic Analysis adopted from Braun and Clarke (2006). The findings discovered that three students have positive attitudes and the others have negative attitudes. Ideally, student with positive attitude will have good score in speaking. However, the researcher found that P4 has negative attitude even though she has middle score in speaking. This case is caused by internal and external factors that make P4 has negative attitude. Moreover, findings also showed that students’ positive attitude were mainly influenced by parents’ roles, teacher’s attitudes, inter-ethnic contact and some psychological factors such as self-confidence and high motivation. In addition, students’ negative attitudes were influenced by lack of desire to speak English and teacher high expectation. Further research may be recommended to find out different factors that might affect student’s attitude with different methodology such as conduct some observations in the classroom to see the implementation of students speaking skill which can reflect their attitude and enrich the data findings. Language attitude knowledge could help the students to motivate them in maintaining their positive attitude. Besides, parents and English teacher could support and encourage the students to increase their positive attitude in learning a language

Even if all of the communication styles were reflected to the characters, the difference of frequency figures in using communication style was not too excessive for each style. Also, with using of communication style, both of main and supporting character can control the outcome of interaction. It can be related to students’ communication and material of teaching and learning English Thus, it is important for the students and lecturers to understand communication style in their interaction with foreign language speakers, especially Americans to avoid the misunderstanding of communication and control the outcome of interaction

It belongs to a qualitative content analysis approach. The data source comes from the movie script of Freedom Writers in the form of conversation and utterances of the characters that are appropriate with the focused analysis. It uses the Grice’s theory of flouting maxims as well as implicature and Searle’s theory of illocutionary acts to support the data analysis. It reveals that the characters flouted the maxim of quantity, maxim of quality, maxim of relevance, and maxim of manner that create the presence of implicature. They used generalized conversational implicature and particularized conversational implicature to calculate the implied meanings. It found that the implied meanings are intended to give information, to deny truthful information, to do action, to express feeling, and to show politeness and respect

Abstract

The purposes of the study were: (1) To find out seventh semester English Department students’ reading habit. (2) To find out seventh semester English Department students’ vocabulary size. (3) To find out the relationship between students’ reading habit and vocabulary size. The design of this study was correlational research design using quantitative approach. The population of this study was the seventh semester English Department students of Mulawarman University in the Academic Year 2018/2019 with the total sample of 50 students. The instruments used for the study were Reading Habit Questionnaire and Vocabulary Size Test. The time for collecting the data was different for each instrument in order to avoid errors or undesired results. Then, the researcher correlated the data using Pearson Product Moment Correlation formula in SPSS. This study showed three findings. First, it was found that the mean score of the reading habit questionnaire was 49.7, meaning that the students’ reading habit was classified as moderate. Second, it was found that the mean score of the vocabulary size test was 7968, meaning that the students’ vocabulary size fell in the category of Mid-Frequency level. Third, after analyzing the data using Pearson Product Moment formula, the researcher found that reading habit and vocabulary size had a positive, yet “very low” correlation (with rcomputed = 0.188). Having positive “very low” correlation means that both the variables had the tendency of getting similar results, but then the tendency was weak. In other words, this means that students who got high score in their reading habit did not automatically get high score in the vocabulary size test, and vice versa. However, there might be some factors affecting the findings of the study. Therefore, further investigation on which other factors might affect reading habit and its relation with vocabulary size should be done in the future.

Abstract

This study aims to determine (1) the design of comic-based teaching materials; (2) the feasibility of comic-based teaching materials; and (3) the effectiveness of comic-based teaching materials. The scope of this development is limited only to planning, materials, and evaluation in the learning process. The method used in this development research is the R&D (Research and Development) research and development method, which is a type of method used to produce certain products and test the effectiveness of these products. This R&D method uses the Brog and Gall development research design adapted by Sugiyono. The data collection technique used a questionnaire in the form of a questionnaire and a test of the ability to paraphrase the hikayat text into a short story. After the final trial, students' learning completeness in learning to paraphrase the text of a hikayat into a short story was 88.23%. The developed teaching materials were declared very feasible through material expert tests (91.66%), media/design experts stated that they were very feasible (88.88%), and educational practitioners stated that they were very feasible (87.5%). Therefore, comic teaching material in learning to paraphrase hikayat text into short stories can be used as a supporting source in the learning process.

Abstract

This research discusses the great turmoil that occurred in October 2022 in the education environment of Samarinda City regarding the issue of removing teacher incentives. Thousands of teachers carried out demonstrations using written language contained in slogans. Slogans were used to protest against the circular letter from the Mayor of Samarinda concerning the alignment of incentives for teachers and education personnel. Critical discourse analysis was conducted to understand the meaning of the written language in the demonstration's slogan. Observation techniques, unstructured interviews, and photo documentation were also used as supporting methods in data collection. The research uses Norman Fairclough's three-dimensional analysis, which uses three main dimensions: the text, discourse, and social practice. This three-dimensional analysis can provide a more comprehensive and critical understanding of slogan language in a broader social, political, and cultural context. It can help reveal the power, meaning, and social implications of slogans and understand how slogans influence action and change in society.
