Abstract

Background: Stunting remains a public health problem with long-term consequences for child growth and development. Integrated Health Posts (Posyandu) play a strategic role as community-based health services in stunting prevention; however, their utilization is influenced by mothers’ perceptions of the role and function of Posyandu. Objective: This study aimed to gain an in-depth understanding of mothers’ perceptions of the role of Posyandu in stunting prevention in the working area of Martapura 1 Primary Health Center. Methods: This study employed a qualitative design with a descriptive phenomenological approach. The study was conducted in June 2025 in the working area of Martapura 1 Primary Health Center. Participants were recruited using purposive sampling, with inclusion criteria of mothers who had stunted children under five years of age. A total of 13 participants were involved until data saturation was achieved. Data were collected through in-depth interviews using semi-structured interview guidelines and analyzed through transcription, coding, categorization, and thematic analysis with the assistance of NVivo 12 software. Results: The findings identified four themes related to mothers’ perceptions of the role of Posyandu in stunting prevention in the working area of Martapura 1 Primary Health Center: (1) visit patterns; (2) Posyandu services; (3) perceived benefits of Posyandu; and (4) mothers’ expectations. Conclusion: Mothers primarily perceived Posyandu as a place for routine child growth monitoring, while its role in stunting prevention was not fully understood. These findings indicate a gap between the ideal role of Posyandu in stunting prevention and mothers’ perceptions at the community level.

Abstract

Stunting remains a public health problem with long-term impacts on the quality of human resources; therefore, contextual and socially acceptable prevention efforts are needed. This topic was selected due to the limited understanding of mothers of toddlers regarding stunting prevention and the suboptimal use of local cultural values as a medium for health education. This community service activity aimed to improve mothers’ knowledge about stunting prevention through the integration of Banjar local cultural values. The community service method applied participatory community education conducted at Posyandu ILP Subur, Jawa Laut Village, utilizing stunting prevention posters in the Banjar language and baimbai bapandir group discussions. The results showed an increase in participants’ knowledge, from 60% in the good category at the pre-test to 100% in the good category at the post-test. It can be concluded that Banjar culture-based stunting prevention education is effective in improving mothers’ knowledge and has the potential to be replicated in other areas.

Abstract

Abstract

Acute Respiratory Infection (ARI) is an infectious disease that is the main cause of mortality and morbidity in children under five years of age (toddlers). Mothers play an important role in determining the decisions and actions needed in caring for toddlers with ARI at home. Even though the ARI treatment given to toddlers from health service facilities is successful, if it is not treated further at home, the toddler will be at risk of experiencing ARI again, so mothers play an important role in caring for toddlers with ARI. This research is qualitative research with a phenomenological design. The participants who participated in this research were 5 mothers who had toddlers with a history of ARI. The sampling technique used was snowball sampling. Data collection used the in-depth interview method to explore mothers' experiences in caring for toddlers with ARI. The data analysis used is Colaizzi data analysis. The results of this study identified 4 themes, namely actions taken by mothers to overcome the symptoms of ISPA, difficulties faced by mothers in caring for toddlers with ARI, children's responses when receiving treatment at home, and actions taken by mothers to prevent ARI. The conclusion obtained from this research is that 4 themes were obtained from mothers' experiences in caring for toddlers with ARI
