Abstract

This study analyzes the 1995 film Clueless through Judith Butler's theory of gender performativity, which views gender as a construct shaped by societal expectations and repetitive actions. Using qualitative analysis, the research highlights how the film critiques traditional gender norms through its characters. Cher’s hyperfemininity both adheres to and challenges societal expectations, Tai’s fashion-driven transformation reflects identity fluidity, and Christian’s ambiguous masculinity subverts conventional norms. Additionally, humor in the film critiques class and gender constructs. The study situates Clueless within feminist and demonstrating how it portrays gender as dynamic and open to reinterpretation.

Abstract

In sociolinguistic studies, politeness is understood as a linguistic strategy used to maintain social harmony, minimize conflict, and respect face needs in communicative interaction. This research examines soft rejection as a form of digital politeness strategy employed by Generation Z in WhatsApp communication. Grounded in Brown and Levinson’s (1987) Politeness Theory, this study analyzes how Gen Z applies both positive and negative politeness strategies to deliver indirect refusals politely while maintaining solidarity and personal autonomy. Using a descriptive qualitative method, the data were collected from screenshots of WhatsApp conversations containing examples of soft rejection among Gen Z users. The findings reveal that Gen Z frequently uses humor, emojis, and laughter markers such as “hehe” or “wkwk” as expressions of positive politeness, while phrases such as “sorry” or “maybe later” reflect negative politeness. These strategies indicate that digital politeness among Gen Z has evolved into a unique form of linguistic adaptation, where respect and familiarity are maintained through creative language use in digital communication.

Abstract

This article explores the field of feminist stylistics, a multidisciplinary approach to analyzing a poem titled “Being a Woman” through a feminist lens. By examining the stylistic choices and linguistic strategies in poetry, the article investigates how language can either reinforce or challenge prevailing gender norms and stereotypes. Focusing on three topics, feminism in stylistics, female sentences, and metaphor, we can construct a conclusion regarding the contents within the poem. We found that the theme of oppression and fighting against inequality is heavily prevalent within the poem. The author uses veiled words to hide their hidden antagonism against the male gender. In conclusion, this article emphasizes the critical role of feminist stylistics in redefining how we understand and interact with language in the context of gender. It offers valuable insights into the ways in which language can be both a tool of oppression and a vehicle for feminist empowerment.

Abstract

This study investigates the use of figurative language and its influence on joke structure in the stand-up comedy of Christian Giacobbe, an Italian performer active in the Indonesian comedy scene. Despite growing research on humor and figurative language, few studies have examined how figurative language systematically functions within the setup–punchline structure in cross-cultural stand-up comedy. Adopting a qualitative descriptive approach, the research analyzes 41 jokes across 14 performances selected from YouTube, focusing on how figurative language contributes to comedic rhythm, cultural framing, and audience engagement. The analysis applies Kennedy’s (1995) typology of figurative language and Attardo’s (1994) general verbal theory of humor (GVTH) to examine how various figurative language are strategically placed within the setup–punchline structure. Findings reveal that contradictive figurative language dominates the punchlines, delivering surprise and critique, while comparative forms appear in setups to build contextual contrast. Symbolic references further enrich the cultural depth and communicative resonance of the humor. The study concludes that figurative language not only enhances joke construction but also serves as a powerful tool for cross-cultural connection and commentary, particularly in multilingual and multicultural settings like Indonesia. This study contributes by demonstrating that figurative language as a structural mechanism in humor construction, rather than merely as a stylistic feature, particularly through its alignment with GVTH components.
