Abstract

The  rapid development  of technology influence people’s  life  in  many aspects including  the process of teaching and learning  in university, school  etc. Some social medias are popular in society, one of them is Facebook. This social  networking can be used for any purposes Such as  interacting, marketing, publishing, learning etc.  The study aims to prove whether Facebook’s group discussion can be effectively used to improve reading strategies which are normally developed through classroom interaction. It is an action research design involving one group consisting of 37 students randomly sampled out from a population of 198 students. A plan-act-observe-reflect design of the study will be carried out in two cycles. Each cycle involves pretest, treatment and post test. Cycle 1 is undertaken to see if there is a significant difference between the pretest and post test upon treatment. The indicator of success of the treatment is that the post test outscores the pretest. If it does, then  Cycle 2 will be conducted to convince the results. If the two cycles show an increase in the mean scores, it can be claimed that the method is effective. In other words, Facebook’s group discussion can be effectively used to improve reading strategies. Key words:  Facebook group discussion, reading skill

This online quiz has received favorable responses from the students. The majority of them agreed that the online quiz is good to use as for practice. One of the reasons is that online quiz can be done elsewhere if the students happen to be able to do at the time of being assigned. Question Writer (QW) is a paid software application. Abstract

The current study explored the use of deictic expressions by the first semester students of English Letters, FBIB UNISBANK in their oral presentations of Performative Spoken English. Included in the deictic expressions are those of  personal pronouns, time, place and discourse. Note taking was used to collect the data from the total population during oral presentation in PSE (performative Spoken English) classes. The data were purely analyzed qualitatively without any numeric calculation.  Errors made by the students  were then analyzed employing Richards’ Error Classification Criteria (https://www.professorjackrichards.com/ ). The findings indicate that all types of deictic expressions were used except that at discourse level.  At first it was assumed that the students failed to observe gthe rules of deictic expressions. But, after Focus Group Discussion (FGD), it also turned out that some students actually only made errors in the use of deictic expressions. The students  managed to identify the errors and to correct them It is therefore recommended that more practice be done on the part of the students.Key words: deictic expressions, oral presentation, error analysis, focus group discussion

Abstract

The current study aimed at justifying that updating or upgrading the mastery on discourse markers (DMs) could improve the students’ reading skills. It is arguably true that DMs do facilitate readers to comprehend texts in terms of the logical and grammatical relation. Therefore, an action research involving 21 students randomly selected as the subjects of the study were conducted in Reading Classes. Pre-test, Post-test 1 and Post-test 2 were administered to generate the data consisting of the progress of their reading skills. Theoretical insights on DMs (function and uses) were also highlighted including the teaching procedures to support the findings of the classroom action research. It turns out that despite the fact that there are 4 types of DMs, only three of them were mostly used in the reading texts, namely contrastive, elaborative and inferential markers. Updating or upgrading DMs proves effective to improve the students’ reading skills as there were increases in scores to indicate improvements. The behavior that is reflected by the character after believing in superstition is the character trying to solve the case using a religious point of view. Meanwhile the effect that arises after believing in superstition is that they succeed in knowing and realizing that the mastermind behind the case is devil.

Theoretical  framework  for  the  use  of Code- Switching was highlighted as the basis of data analysis. Findings reveal  that most members of WAG employ intrasentential code-switching.  Regarding the rationales of code-switching, most members used code- switching to talk about particular topics and to show emphaty. The study concludes that code switching is a social reality in a multilingual and multicultural society of diverse educational background. It is highly recommended that similar studies be conducted in some wider and more diverse strata of people in the use of CS to support a newly coined term ‘Permanent Code Switching’ (PCS).
