Abstract

There has been a discrepancy between visitors needs of guide service at a bird-watching site in Bali and the guides English competence. This article addresses the language learning needs of the guides and how they are analyzed to construct an English module for the bird-watching guides. The module can hopefully improve the guiding service, enhance the tourists’ experience and contribute to the conservation of culture via tourism activities. Beside knowledge about the heron population, the material also covers insight about Balinese’s traditional house, their prayer offerings, and their spiritual philosophy. Each chapter of the module encloses conversation and role-play, grammar focus, pronunciation drill, and reading section. The English material was then judged by the experts in language teaching and in Hinduism.

Abstract

Most of the six species of sea turtles in Indonesian waters have seen a decline, mainly due to human exploitation. One of the efforts to prevent the extinction of this pre-historic reptiles is the establishment of conservation centers. In Bali, one of the conservation centers actively involved in the efforts to conserve turtles is the Turtle Conservation and Education Center (TCEC). As more foreign tourists who are aware of turtle conservation come to this place, guides at TCEC are expected to able to provide sufficient explanation about turtles and their environment in English. They should provide a thorough insight of the turtle's anatomy, behavior, and reproductive cycle. This study aimed at developing English module for turtle conservation guides at TCEC. In developing the module, a framework of material development model was adopted. The framework consists of some stages namely, needs analysis, formulation of goals and objectives, development of English learning materials, and evaluation. The results of this study provide some implication and contributions for English language teaching.

Abstract

The study aimed at discovering the process through which three tourist guides of French, Spanish, and Japanese acquired different foreign languages. The data was taken through in-depth interviews to explore the motivation that drove their language learning, the language interference, the technique they used to self-teach themselves the language, and their immersion in the language’s native country. The recorded interviews were then transcribed and analyzed through data reduction, data display, and verification drawing. The results were then given to the subjects to ensure trustworthiness and to verify the researcher’s interpretation of the interview. The study found that 1) one of the most crucial factors of language learning success was strong motivation, which led to consistency and risk-taking attitude; 2) a significant growth of language mastery took place when the subjects spent extended time in the language’s native country; 3) both formal classroom instruction and informal independent learning were essential for their language improvement; 4) the subjects proactively consulted the native speakers to improve their vocabulary inventory, to correct inaccuracies or to gain new language expressions; and 5) due to the different nature of the languages they were learning, each subject had a diverse view on grammar and language interference. In pedagogical implication, teachers could foster students’ willingness to learn with either instrumental motivation, i.e. by raising awareness of the benefit of foreign language ability, or with integrative motivation, i.e. by raising students’ interest in the culture or people whose language was being studied. Besides, language learners, or language teachers, might reflect on this research to complement formal-classroom learning with a large degree of informal-independent learning.

Abstract

This study is conducted to discover the learning strategies used by more successful and less successful language learners at a tourism college in Bali. This mix-method research combined quantitative data from the questionnaire with qualitative narration obtained from a semi-structured interview. Thirty students were asked to fill in the Strategy Inventory of Language Learning (Oxford 1990). The next step was the interview, whose questions were based on their SILL results; it scrutinized the explanation of the low or high rate that they had given. The result showed that metacognitive strategies were the most prevalent among students in both groups. On the other side, the least used strategies for more successful learners were those of memory, whereas the less successful ones most rarely used compensation strategies. The interview revealed that the more successful participants improve their English by watching movies or reading books. The other strategies were taking notes and using new words in conversation, as well as making guesses on new words, and writing in a diary. Language learners could refer to those strategies to accelerate their learning progress. Teachers should also be aware of the diverse strategies and inform the students about the other alternative strategies that might suit their weaknesses, strengths, or learning style. It is also very helpful to provide an environment where students could explore different strategies, either by making access to native speakers available or by assigning diary writing and portfolio.

Abstract

Museum Pustaka Lontar in Karangasem, Bali, has preserved and promoted lontars, the manuscripts that carried the ancient texts of Balinese tradition. This research and development study constructed an English module for the local guides at the lontar museum. The needs analysis derived from the observation of the museum, and interviews with the guides, investigated the guides’ necessities, lacks, and wants in learning English. The result showed that the local guides needed modules where the materials correspond to the guiding sequences of the museum. The materials had to also accommodate the translation of museum lontar-specific terms into English. Conversation-based materials were the most requested, as it resembled their daily interaction with visitors. These findings served as the base for the material development of the English module. Guides, language learners, and teachers in the tourism field might source their learning from the module.

Abstract

Tourist villages are a forum for local communities to participate in regional tourism development. Through the existence of tourist villages, people can develop their potential and it is hoped that this can improve the welfare of local communities. Medewi Village is a tourist village known as an international surfing location. However, the results of these tourism activities have not had a massive impact on the community in Medewi Village. The formation of the Medewi Tourism Village is expected to have a wider impact, but this cannot yet be done optimally because efforts are needed to increase public awareness about tourism. To increase public awareness, training and assistance is needed so that people are more aware of tourism and have the ability to manage their tourism potential. Assistance activities carried out include English language training and tour guiding so that the community has competence in communicating and accompanying tourists while visiting the Medewi Tourism Village. This service is carried out through three stages, including needs analysis, data collection and implementation of training activities.
