Abstract

There is no target language can fully represent the source language. This study focuses on the problem of differences, uniqueness and limitations of Sundanese as the target language in accommodating Arabic Quran, using the linguistic approach to translation. I use eleven translations of the Quranic Sundanese asthe mainobject. This study shows that there is a similar structure of Sundanese language in the midst of variations of the translation of the Quran. I confirm that the translation of the Quran in Sundanese has limitations and barriers, such as thechange of lexical, word types and unit of semantic and structure of sentences. The most complicated is translation in the form of Sundanese metrical verse or dangding. The translationsof the Quran in Sundanese, unlike the Bible translationsin Christianity, tend to be fettered by the structure of source language. The Sundanese translators generally difficultto use the structure of target language, because it is bounded by their loyaltiesto the source language. Therefore, there are various compromises were taken by translators to bridge the complexity between both target and source language structures. It is an attempt to show inability of Sundaneselanguage to accommodate Arabiclanguage in the midst of rich and complexity of the language

Abstract

This article focuses on the local tradition of Ahmadiyya in West Java in the form of Sundanese oral literature entitled Pupujian Imam Mahdi, the song of praise of the Mahdi. It is not only related to strengthening the so-called “Sundanese Ahmadiyya” identity through cultural acculturation, but also an important channel in their acceptances in regions with the largest adherents in Indonesia. Through literary and cultural identity analysis, I argue that the literary and cultural channels contributed to the acceptance of minority groups in Indonesia. Through pupujian Imam Mahdi, for instance, Ahmadiyya teachings on the messianistic figure were acculturated into the Sundanese literary tradition. It becomes a frame of movement towards the formation of the Sundanese Ahmadiyah identity. The pupujian is used to support their existences through the same cultural representation as other Sundanese people. It is a cultural strategy carried out by the most controversial minority group among the rejection of the most groups. This study is also important in revealing Ahmadiyya's contribution to the Sundanese local culture which may not be recognized by others. It actually becomes a peculiarity of Ahmadiyya identity in the Indonesian archipelago which is different from other cultural representation of Ahmadiyya in various regions in the world.

Abstract

This study discusses the translator’s experience in the project of Sundanese translation of the Qur’?n being published by the Agency of Research, Development, Education and Training of Ministry of Religious Affairs of Republic of Indonesia in 2018-2019. The project was organized by Sundanese scholars of the State Islamic University of “Sunan Gunung Djati” and Padjadjaran University, Bandung. As one of the translator team members, the writer tried to phenomenologically explain the language negotiations, the ideology of the majority in Qur’anic translation and the limit of academic behind the project. The result of the study shows that the project of Qur’anic translation which is funded by Indonesian government involved not only academic problems, but also non-academic ones. It is not only related to the discussion of the substance of the Qur’anic translation which became the medium of negotiations between the expert of the Qur’?n and the Sundanese language, but also involved the administration and government control to the ideology of Islamic majority. This study also shows that the academic has to be neutral and objective in order to able to transcend the ethnic and ideological boundaries. This article is part of the writer’s argument based on the writer’s choice, although as part of the translator team, he has been overshadowed by the ideology of Islamic majority.

Abstract

Abstract

This study focuses on the tradition of Sundanese literary among the reformist Muslims. My object of study is a Sundanese book of poetic translation of the Qur’ān in the form of metrical verse or dangding entitle Hariring Wangsiting Gusti Nu Maha Suci (A Hymn of God Revelation the Most Holy) using translation approach and critical discourse analysis. The book is written by Muh. Syarief Sukandi (1931-1997). He was known as a member of Indonesian army, ‘ulamā’ and activist of reformist Islamic organization, Islamic Union (Persatuan Islam or Persis). Sukandi’s Hariring was published by Bina Insan Asy-Syarief Foundation in 2010. It contains 23 translations of the Qur’anic short surahs amount to 63 stanzas. He uses many types of metrum (pupuh). The study confirms that Sukandi’s Hariring tends to be a translation of exegesis (al-tarjamah al-tafsīriyyah) that was limited by the metrum rules. However, Sukandi’s Hariring is not only shows the influence of Sundanese nature, but also his effort to strengthen Islamic ideology which closer to pre-Islamic culture. It can be seen in the use of some Sundanese words of pre-Islamic period. It is an ambivalence that may be contrary to the purification ideology of Persis, because considered to contaminate the purity of Islamic teachings. It is a work of another side of reformist Muslim which do not keep the distance from local culture.

Abstract

Abstract: This article focuses on the construction of Islam-Sunda identity in West Java which is reflected in the rubric of the qur’ānic commentary or tafsīr in the Sundanese print media. My object matter is six Sundanese Islamic magazines published between 1930-2015, i.e. Tjahja Islam, Al-Imtisal, Al-Mawa'idz, Almoechtar, Iber and Bina Da’wah using the analysis of identity construction. Although Sundanese Muslims devided into traditionalist and modernist, I confirm that all Sundanese Islamic magazines show the local Islamic identity which is called as Islam-Sunda. The identity of Islam-Sunda in the magazine rubric of qur’ānic commentary can be seen at following aspects: the interpretation of surahs which have an important role in Sundanese daily life, the interpretation of Islamic stories, the use of Sundanese phrases that touch their hearts, the formation of a pious Sundanese personality and the involvement of Islamic scholars or ajengan as an exegete of the Qur’ān. This study asserts that the magazine rubric of qur’ān commentary is not only have a lot of Islamic messages, but also to be an expression of Islamic identity in Sundanese print media.

Abstract

One of characters of modernist Islam organization in Indonesia is the opposition to traditionalist Islam practices. Initially, the modernist Islam activist also learned in the traditional Islam culture before they turned around. This study focuses on the roots of the traditional Islam among the modernist Islam organization activists, Islamic Union (Persatuan Islam/PERSIS). The study object is the historical life of the PERSIS chairman, Aceng Zakaria and his magnum opus works, al-Muyassar fî ‘Ilm al-Naḥw and al-Hidâyah fî Masâ’il Fiqh Muta‘âriḍah. Through a socio-intellectual historical approach, the study shows that the Islamic intellectual tradition of the modernist activists is inseparable from the learning of traditional pesantren. Aceng Zakaria, as a PERSIS ulama, originally learned at the traditional pesantren in the mid-twentieth century. The roots of traditional Islamic science influences his intellectual career which was reflected in his works. Both books, Arabic grammar al-Muyassar and fiqh discourse al-Hidâyah demonstrate his connectivity to the intellectual of traditional pesantren. However, Aceng Zakaria, as a modernist and reformist ulama, also modified his explanation systematically and practically. This shows that the genealogy of intellectual tradition of pesantren has an important position in supporting the development of reformist Islamic ideas in Indonesia.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the friendship between the colonizer with the colony in the Dutch East Indies. The study focuses on a number of works and letters of Haji Hasan Mustapa to C. Snouck Hurgronje. Mustapa was the Hoofd penghulu (Chief-penghulu) of Aceh and Bandung. He is a close friend of Snouck since his first met in Mecca in 1885. Through the social-intellectual history approach, the study tries to explain their closeness which are no longer merely a relationship between employer and employee, but has penetrated deeply into the true brother- hood and kinship ties. Snouck who representated as a colonial master looked Mustapa as a figure who has unique talent and character which achieve high knowledge about Islamic law and Sundanese customs. Instead, Mustapa looked Snouck as his close friends who have a commitment to defend each other. Mustapa shed his impression and expectation to meet him again someday in his letters. Mustapa often shed tears when remembering the time of togetherness that will not be forgotten throughout his life. It is an interplay friendship that have never imagined in shaping the face of colonialism in Indonesia, which its influence cannot be ignored until now.

Abstract

This article examines the peculiarities of one of Sundanese tafsirs or Qur’anic commentaries in West Java, Moh. E. Hasim’s Ayat Suci Lenyepaneun. Using discourse analysis approach, this study illustrates how the author arranges his interpretation in line with Sundanese culture and socio-religious background in modern Indonesia. There are some characteristics of Hasim’s Lenyepaneun: nuances of Sundanese literature and nature, Sundanese daily stories and his response to social-religious discourse. All these characteristics are significant in shaping the horizon of interpretation that feels more nyunda (Sundanese) as well as current response in his period. This study proves that the Sundanese tafsirs is not only related to deliver messages of God, but also associated with the functionalization of Sundanese as language of sense (rasa) to be more pervasive into hearts and minds. Lenyepaneun represents an effort of Sundanese domestication and bridging a gap between Arabic and Sundanese. This study also reinforces an illustration of how the text of Qur’anic commentary could serve as a social commentary. It could be one example of how local Qur’anic commentary in Indonesia could be a guardian of local Islam without leaving its relevance to the modernity.

Abstract

This article studies the ideological motive of modernist Islam in the indegenous tafsir using local Sundanese language: Nurul-Bajan of Muhammad Romli and Ayat Suci Lenyepaneun of Moh. E. Hasim. Using critical discourse analysis approach, the author shows how the modernist ideology of Islam took place and influenced the interpretation of religious texts (tafsi@r), such as the Sundanese tafsir. This ideological tendency can be understood not only as the life background of the author as a local activist modernist Muslim, but also influenced by the historical situation in the 1970s and 1990s, when the strengthening of ideological rivalry between modernist and traditional Islam. Being Sundanese Muslim living in Sundanese region, they use local language media in the interpretation of the Qur’a>n as an effective tool to diseminate modernist Islam.
