Abstract

Abstrak Tujuan penelitian ini adalah menganalisa dan mendeskripsikan teknik-teknik yang digunakan, keakuratan serta kejelasan dalam menerjemahkan istilah minuman dari bahasa Indonesia ke bahasa Inggris dengan menggunakan 30 istilah minuman Indonesia sebagai instrumen. Responden dalam penelitian ini adalah 30 orang mahasiswa Jurusan Sastra Inggris bidang Linguistik yang masuk tahun akademik 2009/2010 yang dipilih dengan menggunakan cluster random sampling. Dari hasil analisis, ditemukan bahwa terdapat 16 teknik yang digunakan oleh mahasiswa dalam menerjemahkan istilah minuman dari bahasa Indonesia ke bahasa Inggris. Keenambelas teknik itu adalah established equivalent 48.67%, borrowing 17.56%, generalization 8.78%, literal translation 5.22%, calque 4.78%, Omission 4.33%, description 2.89%, adaptation 2.56%, amplification 2.56%, reduction 1%, particularization 0.89%, calque plus translation 0.11%, reduction plus established equivalent 0.22%, borrowing plus generalization 0.11%, borrowing plus adaptation 0.22 %, adaptation dan established equivalent 0.11%. Hasil penelitian menunjukan bahwa teknik menggunakan bentuk lazim dalam TL (established equivalent technique) merupakan teknik yang paling dominan dan paling cocok digunakan dalam menerjemahkan istilah minuman. Dapat disimpulkan juga bahwa penerjemahan istilah minuman dalam penelitian ini berada pada level akurat dan sangat jelas. Kata kunci: penerjemahan, teknik penerjemahan, ketepatan, kejelasan.

Abstract

This research aims to analyze students’ perception on the use of audio visual materials in learning English seen from four language skills, and analyzed from the attractiveness, effectiveness, relevance, and motivation. The questionnaire and interview were used as the instrumentation of this research. This research was conducted at the 11th grade of students in the science program of SMAN 3 Bukittinggi academic year 2022/2023. The researcher used cluster random sampling to choose the sample. Two classes in total 63 students were taken as the sample of this research. In this study, descriptive research with quantitative and qualitative methods was used to analyze the data. Based on the data from the questionnaire and interview, students have positive perceptions on the use audio visual material in learning English seen from four language skills; listening, speaking, reading, and writing. It is shown by the result of the interview and the total mean of the questionnaire.

Abstract

The focus of learning had changed from face-to-face learning to online learning because of the covid-19 pandemic that happened in the beginning of March 2020 in Indonesia. Geschool was one of the alternative ways which was used for online learning. This study aimed to find out students’ perception toward the use of Geschool in English learning which was relevant with the lesson delivery, accessibility, media, features and materials used, and personal factors. The design of the research was conducted by using the descriptive research with a quantitative and qualitative approach. The population of this reseach was eighth grade students of of SMPN 1 Gunung Talang academic year 2021/2022 consisted of 176 students. The sampling was 136 students consented to participate in this study and 2 participants were interviewed per each class. The result was the students had relatively negative perceptions toward the use Geschool in learning English. The students mostly got confused and did not understand the materials because teachers barely gave further explanations. They also cannot enjoy the learning. The students were easy to access the material and assignment given in Geschool. However, they cannot get more access to the references or reading materials. Unfamiliar with the Geschool was also one of the problems students face and it took time to master the application. The students were also less-motivated and felt lazy learning English toward Geschool.

Abstract

  The process of changing learning produces a variety of different views. This study aims to reveal students' perceptions of using the zoom meeting application for online microteaching classes through pedagogical, socio-cultural, and technical aspects. The population in this study were twenty (20) 3rd-year students of the English education study program who had attended microteaching classes and of course were able to provide their views and opinions. It can be concluded that students have a relatively positive perception of using the zoom meeting application for online microteaching class. The results of the study represent the positive result in carrying out microteaching lectures online. Even though the lectures are conducted online, they lecture still runs according to the standard. For interactive learning applications that are used, students seem happy to use the Zoom Meeting application as a learning medium because apart from being practical and simple, zoom meetings also rarely cause problems that are difficult to handle.

Abstract

This research aims to analyze the effect of using Youtube towards EFL students’ speaking skill for senior high school in Indonesia. The writer focuses on using meta-analysis method, in which to get a general conclusion from secondary data. By searching from Google Scholar and Sinta, fourteen data are found in the form of articles, journals and thesis. The data collected as samples are based on keywords indonesian high school students with tenth and eleventh grades as samples. The research uses JASP in order to analyze the data. Then, the findings from the analysis reveals that the effect size of using Youtube towards students’ speaking skill for grade tenth is high (RE model=1,49) and medium effect (RE model=0,64) for grade eleventh. Moreover, Youtube significantly and positively affects the students’s speaking skill for both grade tenth and eleventh.

Abstract

This paper is a one-shot case study which aims to reveal if the integration of anti-drug character education into foreign language writing classes by using short movie is effective to achieve both the learning and character education objectives. An online writing test and a four-Likert scale questionnaire with twenty close-ended questions were given to 32 English college students in West Sumatra. The data of students’ writing were analyzed quantitatively by using Wilcoxon Match Pair Test, while that of the questionnaire was analyzed by using Mann Whitney U Test. The analysis outputs show the success of the integration by the following results: (1) there is a significant improvement in word production number (Asymp. Sign (2-tailed)=0.000); (2) there is a significant improvement in writing score (Asymp. Sign (2-tailed)=0.000); and (3) the students’ understanding towards the moral values sent by the movie are excellent (M=3.92). The findings may have pedagogical implications in adding an effective media reference to improve students’ writing skill and to integrate character education into EFL learning.

Abstract

This research was aimed to know the functions of code-switching in the classroom practised by female and male lecturers and investigated gender differences between female and male lecturers in the use of code-switching in the classroom. The researcher observed the classroom using audio recorder. Then, the data was analysed using mixed method research to measure the frequency of code-switching used by female and male lecturers in the classroom. The research subjects in this study were English education lecturers at Universitas Negeri Padang. Two female lecturers and two male lecturers.
