Abstract

ABSTRACTScavengers are groups of people who seek and collect solid waste that still has economic value. The scavengers usually take out the waste in the trash while or in landfill. Supervisory of the landfill was originally not allow scavengers to collect waste in the landfill because they can be exposed to sharp objects and disease. Over time, the scavengers eventually left to work at the landfill. Number of scavengers in TPA Terjun today is 500 people. The role of scavengers at the landfill is still unknown whether it can help reduce landfill waste in the landfill. This research is a descriptive research with quantitative analysis. The goal is to find out what the role of a scavenger in the management of waste in the landfill. The sample size observed was 30 people. The research result shows that the volume of waste that goes into TPA Terjun every day was 3.868,57 m3 while the amount of waste that can be managed by scavengers every day is 89,02 m3. Thus, the volume of landfill waste left in TPA Terjun every day was 3.779,55 m3.The conclusion from this study is that the scavenger role in waste management and solid waste generation did not show a reduction in the volume of landfill waste in TPA Terjun. Ability scavengers in reducing the volume of waste in TPA Terjun only by 2,3%. Thus, the percentage of residual landfill waste in TPA Terjun every day is 97,7%.The government should develop a technology that not only destroy the waste but also making use of waste as alternative energy sources as well as supporting the role of scavengers in reducing waste in TPA Terjun, Medan. Keywords : Scavengers, Waste Management, Volume of Waste

Abstract

The enrichment of multi-nutrient biscuits, especially by using local ingredients that are proven to have good nutritional values may address the root causes of stunting, such as low socio-economy status and poor knowledge among the people. Moreover, it is a practical solution to reduce the prevalence of stunting. This research employed a quasi-experimental methodology to observe the acceptance of the addition of red sweet potato, temulawak, banana flower, and goat milk in multi-nutrient biscuit. The research population was all children aged between 6 and 7 months old in Langkat. Data analysis carried out was univariate and organoleptic analysis. There were more female toddlers (66.7%) than male. The majority (86.7%) of the research subjects were healthy during data collection and with no history of any diseases in the past one year (73.3%). They had normal birthweight (86.7%) and complete immunization status (53.3%), and were exclusively breastfed (70%) and not stunted (73.3%). There were two types of biscuit, A1 and A2, with different ratio of goat milk prepared in this study. Biscuit A1 with a reduced proportion of goat milk (15 gr) received the highest acceptability test score for color, aroma, texture, and taste.

Abstract

Health issues are a concern of the current government. Health issues are in line with the economic development that the government is aggressively prioritizing. This economic improvement certainly requires a variety of supporting infrastructure. One of them is road infrastructure. Adequate road infrastructure will certainly increase traffic activity. Traffic activity is one of the sources of heavy metal pollution in soil. The contents of motor vehicle emission gases is lead. Lead (Pb) is one of the metal elements that can cause poisoning in humans. This research is important to determine the concentration of soil which is an area of agricultural land that is overgrown with rice. This research was conducted to investigate lead concentration in roadside farmland soils according to roadside distance in the street of Lubuk Pakam – Medan km 32.  A total of 13 topsoils samples were collected with a distance of 0 m, 5 m, 20 m, 40 m, 50 m, 60 m, 80 m, 100 m, 120 m, 150 m, 200 m, 250 m, and 300 m from the roadside. The study found that the consentration  of lead in the soil was in the range of 2.33-11.40. There is no correlation of lead concentration  in soil with distance from highway  with r =0.093 and  p=0,762. The land farm lead-contaminated if used to grow crops that will be consumed is at risk of lead-contaminated Keyword: Lead concentration, Traffic activity, Pollution

Abstract

Diseases can be spread directly or indirectly via unprocessed garbage. Garbage management is crucial if we want to reduce the negative effects that waste has on our health. The community of Pantai Gemi lacks waste-processing infrastructure. The Sanitation Service's inaccessible trash transportation system, which forces people to process waste on their own, is the root of this issue. One significant effort that can be made is to educate the community. This study sought to ascertain how public perception has changed as well as how much less inorganic and organic trash was being produced as a result of the extension intervention. A pre-test-post-test design with one group is used in this kind of research. All of the 2,179 family heads who make up the study's population make up its sample of 30 families. Seven respondents, according to data on changes in respondents' knowledge, report changes in their knowledge of waste management. The results of the normality test demonstrate the homogeneity of the waste generation statistics. The Dependent Sample T-Test method was used to examine waste generation. The analysis of the volume of inorganic waste yielded t = 0.00<0.05, indicating that intervention has an effect on decreasing the volume of inorganic waste in Pantai Gemi Village. The analysis of the weight loss of organic waste yielded t = 0.00<0.05, indicating that intervention has an effect on weight loss of organic waste in Pantai Gemi Village. Residents of Pantai Gemi Village should be given advice by the Department of Cleanliness and the Environment. For the Gemi Beach Village Apparatus to be able to connect the neighborhood's trash management efforts with relevant organizations. For Pantai Gemi Village inhabitants to become accustomed to and learn more about handling waste on their own.

Abstract

Air pollution and respiratory symptoms among operational staff at container terminal of PT. PELINDO Belawan might be caused by emission of PM₁₀ and CO from operational container trucks. This research aims to assess PM₁₀ and CO levels, also to investigate respiratory symptoms among operational staff at container terminal of PT. PELINDO Belawan. This is an observational research with cross-sectional design study. From a population of 699 individuals, 88 samples were obtained using purposive sampling technique. Air quality data was collected through direct measurements at three different locations, while respiratory symptoms data was gathered through staff interviews. PM₁₀ level at the container terminal had exceeded the standard limit, with the highest concentration recorded at the entrance gate, reaching 193 µg/Nm³. Whereas, CO level remained within the acceptable range. Trucks flow observation over a week revealed that the highest flow occurred on Tuesday, with 3,037 trucks, while the lowest flow was on Sunday, with a total of 223 trucks. Among the 88 respondents, 40 individuals (45.5%) experienced respiratory symptoms, with the most common complaint, reported by 25 individuals (65%), being runny or congested nose. Most respiratory symptoms occurred at unpredictable times, as reported by 35 individuals (39.8%). Container terminal of PT. PELINDO Belawan is recommended to enforce mask usage while working and respiratory health check-ups regularly for the operational staff to monitor respiratory health of the operational staff, as well as planting trees to mitigate pollutant levels in the air.

Abstract

Drinking water is vital for daily consumption and having physical qualities that meet health standards is critical. A study (Mason et al.) in 2018 at the University of New York showed that 93% of bottled drinking water contains microplastics. The study used 259 drinking water bottle samples, including those sold in Indonesia from 11 different brands and the size of microplastics found were between 6.5-100 micrometers. Furthermore, microplastics are also found in refillable gallon drinking water that could create microplastics fragments. This study was done to analyze the physical qualities and presence of microplastics in bottled and refillable gallon drinking water in Medan Selayang in 2023. This was a descriptive study with observational and interview methods. There were 12 water samples obtained from simple random sampling. Our study showed that the drinking water physical qualities has met the health standards (100%) as per the regulation of Ministry of Health (Permenkes No.2, 2023). However, the equipment condition in all drinking water depots did not meet the health standards (100%). The processing and cleaning in the drinking water depots have all met the health standards (100%). All samples from drinking water depots contained microplastics in the form of fibers and fragments per liter. It is recommended for water depots in Medan Selayang to pay more attention to the quality of drinking water through physical, chemical, and biological parameters, and to do periodical examination of the water through the public health office.
