Abstract

This article explores the concepts of power and democracy within the context of transnationalism, with a specific focus on Indonesia. It traces the foundational ideas of power from classical political thought to contemporary notions, bridging an understanding that reflects the complexity and multiplicity of power in a transnational world. The author emphasizes the importance of recognizing power multiplicity as a new way to perceive power, given the current historical structure that has produced various actors, transformed institutions, and deconstructed political arenas from traditional models to contemporary ones. The transnational historical structure not only creates new arenas for power but also shapes new methods of power production. These innovations have profound implications for political life and the current face of democracy in Indonesia, reflecting a transition from old paradigms to modern interpretations. The research offers a critical perspective on how transnational influences interact with domestic structure to redefine democracy and power dynamic in a rapidly globalizing world.

Abstract

Amid the threat of a triple planetary crisis (climate change, pollution, and biodiversity loss), the Waste Charity Movement (Gerakan Sedekah Sampah or GSS), initiated by Muhammadiyah, can be considered the praxis of liberation ecotheology under banner green Islam. Developed collectively, it responds to this crisis while promoting social-religious responsibility and economic solidarity. This article demonstrates how Muhammadiyah’s GSS as preliminary initiative actively advances waste management in Indonesia. Drawing on discourse analysis of Muhammadiyah affiliated media, this study illuminates the involvement of Islamic organizations in waste charity initiatives. It offers two key implications: theoretically, it highlights Muhammadiyah’s contribution to addressing planetary crises through education and empowerment within waste charity; practically, it proposes a novel pedagogical approach to mitigating these crises.

Abstract

Scientific climate as the unity of ideas and the activator of an organization is suspected to be a form of civil society leadership. It moves from the personification of actors to the debate of ideas. Civil society as a political movement is a study that still being debated because of its position when faced with the state and policy. This article provides a different review, by carrying out the phenomenon of research-based policy in Indonesia. Through qualitative data tracking, it was shown that some civil society did not put themselves in these two positions, namely as the opponent or the partner for the government. Furthermore, the reality showed that both of them, in this case civil society and the state were more concerned with the realization of their ideas, the openness, and the professionalism of publications to support policy making. More specifically, the existence of openness and implementation of science and information as a collaborative arena appeared from the interaction of the National Development Planning Agency and Knowledge Sector Initiative which had been running since 2011 in building the ecosystem of Research- Based Policy. Then, it was followed by the presence of Open Science community in 2017 and the establishment of National Research and Innovation Agency in 2019. Therefore, both collaborations encouraged the creation of a data openness climate in policy making. This was a general norm, but it did not work fully. Moreover, this article provides a space that the opportunities to strengthen the ecosystem of research-based policy can be optimized by setting out the idea approach and makes the civil society goes beyond the institutional barrier
gb777
