Abstract

Reading habit must be instilled and developed in children from an early age. Motivating children to read has its own challenges in the midst of such rapid developments. Especially in cultivating the spirit of reading English texts. Educators are expected to have creativity in managing a more creative learning process so that it attracts students to be more motivated to learn. Reading is an important skill that must be possessed by students, so it is considered important to provide assistance to strengthen English reading literacy for students at the elementary school level, so that students get used to reading from an early age. Therefore, the purpose of this community service is to foster a spirit of English literacy in elementary school students. One way to achieve this goal is to use cooperative learning methods, namely studying with groups of four to five people, each adapted to a different level of ability, gender, ethnicity or race. This activity combines smart, easy, fast, and fun learning features. The group learning method is part of the activity implementation methodology. This activity involved YPK Elim Malanu elementary school students, Sorong, Southwest Papua who were in grades two and three. The implementation of this activity takes place from August to December 2021. From the results of this activity it can be concluded that group learning can foster students' interest and enthusiasm in English literacy.

Abstract

Perlunya mempersiapkan generasi muda dalam mengembangkan pariwisata di Misool Raja Ampat melalui penguasaan Bahasa Inggris menjadi urgensi pelaksanaan pemberdayaan masyarakat ini. Selain itu, dengan penguasaan Bahasa Inggris tentunya generasi muda akan mampu menunjukkan kualitas dan kekhasan daerahnya lebih baik dari sebelumnya. Mengingat, masih kurangnya keterampilan Bahasa Inggris siswa SMP Negeri 18 Raja Ampat yang berlokasi di Misool dan belum adanya metode yang tepat yang dinyatakan oleh kepala sekolah yang bisa membuat mereka lebih mampu mempersiapkan generaasi muda yang natabenenya sering mendampingi turis yang berkunjung ke daerah mereka. Maka pelatihan Bahasa Inggris Dasar melalui English Camp perlu dilakukan. Berdasar pada penglaman pengabdi dalam melaksanakan English Camp, kegiatan ini berhasil meningkatkan kemampuan percakapan Bahasa Inggris dasar 100 % peserta kegiatan stingkat lebih baik dari sebelum dilaksanakan kegiatan. Selain itu, PKM ini juga menghasilkan satu modul untuk diserahkan kepada sekolah yang menjadikan sekolah mampu mengadopsi kegiatan yang dilakukan secara mandiri sebagai bagian dari keberlanjutan program.

Abstract

This research compares the preference for Grammar Learning Strategies (GLS) between male and female EFL students of Universitas Muhammadiyah Sorong. The research aims to identify the preferred strategies for learning grammar among males and females students and determine if a statistically significant disparity exists in preference for grammar learning strategies among males and females students. A total of 70 students, comprising 35 males and 35 females, took part in the research. They were obtained from 48% of the entire population. A Simple Random Technique was employed to randomly select 35 males and 35 female students from all the classes. The data were gathered using Pawlak's Grammar Learning Strategy Inventory (GLSI) questionnaire. The acquired data were analyzed using the Independent sample t-test procedure using SPSS version 29. The results indicate that male students preferred social grammar learning strategies (GLS). The preference for cognitive grammar learning strategies (GLS) was found among female students, particularly for dealing with Corrective Feedback (CF). Male and female English as a Foreign Language (EFL) Students at Universitas Muhammadiyah Sorong did not differ significantly with regard to their preferred strategies for learning grammar. Based on the analysis of the data, the researchers found that there was no statistically significant distinction between males and females regarding the strategies they preferred to learn grammar. Both males and females are utilizing a Grammar Learning Strategy at a medium level.
