Abstract

The Covid-19 pandemic impacts the learning process, which was initially carried out face to face turning to online learning (in the network). The pandemic was descending, causing learning to be diverted again into offline learning (outside the network). Thus, this study aims to analyze the difference between online and offline learning in student achievement at Mahardika Elementary School Denpasar. The method used is a qualitative method. Data collection using observation methods, interviews, literature studies and documentation studies. The data that has been collected is analyzed by data collection methods, data reduction, data presentation, conclusion and verification. The results showed that the learning process provided two sides of a coin: online and offline. The teacher used Whatsapp Group Class and Zoom in online activity to deliver the learning material. Whereas in offline learning, learning steps are carried out by preparing learning material by the teacher, discussing material directly in the classroom and conducting a discussion session with students. The teacher can better observe students' development because the exercises given directly will be done independently so that the teacher knows the students' understanding precisely. Difficulties in online and offline learning are both derived from two factors: internal factors and external factors. Difficulties derived from internal factors in online and offline learning are intelligence or intellectual, laziness and health factors. Difficulties derived from external factors in online learning: facilities, internet networks and family environments. In comparison, the difficulties derived from external factors in offline learning are the school environment, school facilities and the ability of teachers to deliver materials to students.

Abstract

Tutug Kambuhan is a sacred ritual to celebrate a 42-day-old baby. As one of the cycles in Manusa Yadnya, Tutug Kambuhan has many traditional terms in its procedures. However, some of the younger generation rarely know about it and it has the potential to be eroded along with the times (language death). So far there has been no research that discusses the lexicon in the Tutug Kambuhan ritual, especially in Menyali Village. This research aims to identify the lexicons contained in the procedure of Tutug Kambuhan Ritual in Menyali Village and analyze its cultural meaning. This research focuses on two things, namely the lexicons contained in the Tutug Kambuhan ritual procedure and the cultural meaning of the lexicons. This research uses a qualitative method and an ethnolinguistic approach. This research uses 4 instruments, namely the researcher, interview guidelines, notes, and recording devices. Data collection was done by observation and in-depth interviews with a snowballing technique. Data analysis used includes 4 stages as suggested by Miles and Huberman (1994) including data collection, data reduction, data display, and conclusion. In the results of this study, a total of 38 lexicons were identified in the Tutug Kambuhan procedure in Menyali Village. The findings include: ngulemin, jro mangku, penguleman, sesari, sanggah kemulan, ngalih dauh, nyapatin/ngaluang, sutri, megarapan, banten, srati, mabanyuawangan, pelinggih, mapiuning, penglingsir, natab, dedinan, ngayab, soda, sagi, raka, pelangkiran, ngeluarang, pasegoan, nasi warna, ganjaran, ari-ari, pejati, canang sari, mapetinget-tinget, metaken-taken, piuning, pesarean, nyeroadi, banyuawang, maturan, meraosan, and jro gede.  The results of this study have implications for the provision of cultural heritage documents and increased insight into the field of Linguistics in education.

Data are collected through deep interviews and observations with three selected informants chosen based on a set of specific criteria. This study highlights the role of lexicons in preserving cultural identity amidst the threats posed by language modernization and attrition. This study aims to provide an important contribution to the preservation of the language and culture of Bali. Abstract

The rapid development of the era impacts the sustainability of language and culture, including the lexicons in Balinese rituals. The young generation's indifference to using lexicons will result in language death which can threaten the community's cultural identity. However, studies on the lexicons used in Balinese rituals, particularly the tooth-filing ritual (Metatah), remain limited. While some research has explored the ritual's procedures, there is still a gap in identifying and analyzing the specific lexicons used. This study aims to identify the lexicons used in the procedures of the Metatah ritual in Menyali Village and analyze the cultural meaning of the identified lexicons. The ethnolinguistic perspective is used to examine the relationship between language and culture. This study was used a qualitative descriptive design. Observation and interviews with three selected informants were conducted to collect the data. The instruments used in this study were the researcher, observation sheets, interview guides, interview sheets, smartphones, and notebooks. This study employed an interactive data analysis model, consisting of three stages: data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing or verification. The study results show that the Metatah ritual consists of ten procedures, with a total of thirty-five (35) lexicons used in all of these procedures. These lexicons represent the activities, tools, materials, and offerings involved in the ritual. The obtained lexicons carry cultural meanings that reflect the traditions and beliefs of the Menyali people, connected to the concept of Tri Hita Karana. The findings of this study underline the importance of maintaining the lexicons in the Metatah ritual as a source of cultural knowledge to maintain a community's identity. Thus, this study can have implications in linguistic studies as an effort to preserve the Balinese language.

Abstract

Abstract

As an antagonist in C.S. Lewis’s The Magician’s Nephew, Queen Jadis is narratively required to be depicted as a negative character. This study aimed to analyze Queen Jadis’ negative traits and how they strengthened her role as an antagonist through textual analysis in Miles, Huberman, and Saldana’s interactive qualitative data analysis model. The study showed that Queen Jadis was depicted as ruthless, arrogant, authoritarian, and cowardly, creating conflict and tension in the storyline. Queen Jadis was depicted as ruthless and arrogant to those weaker than her. She destroyed the entire world of Charn by using the Deplorable Word for her desires. When brought to the human world, she showed a dominant trait and used her power to control others. Her cowardice was most strongly shown when she fled at the sign of defeat. While these results show that Queen Jadis’s characterizations made her a proper antagonist for the children-heroes in the novel, her failure in conquering the worlds beyond Charn and loss of magical power function as punishment for these negative traits, sending a moral message to avoid building evil characters for the readers.
