Abstract

Nutritional issues among toddlers remain a major public health concern, especially in indigenous communities with limited access to basic services and unique socio-cultural systems, such as the Baduy tribe in Banten, Indonesia. This study aimed to identify key determinants of toddler nutritional status in the Baduy community using a cross-sectional design and multivariate logistic regression analysis. A total of 120 toddlers aged 0–59 months from Baduy Dalam and Baduy Luar were purposively selected. Data were collected through anthropometric measurements and structured interviews covering demographic, economic, environmental, and healthcare access variables. Bivariate analysis (Chi-square) showed significant associations between nutritional status and maternal education, household economic status, environmental sanitation, and healthcare access (p < 0.05). Multivariate analysis confirmed these as significant predictors: low maternal education (AOR = 2.31), low economic status (AOR = 4.85), poor sanitation (AOR = 2.70), and limited healthcare access (>3 km) (AOR = 2.40). Child age and gender were not significant factors. The findings indicate that nutritional vulnerability in the Baduy is shaped by structural determinants tied to cultural norms, geographic isolation, and subsistence lifestyles. Effective interventions must be culturally sensitive, improve sanitation and food security, and ensure accessible, community-accepted health services, involving traditional leaders for sustainable impact.

Abstract

Early initiation of breastfeeding (IMD) is a crucial process that allows newborns to begin breastfeeding within the first hour after birth. This practice strengthens the mother-child bond, enhances the baby’s immune system, and reduces neonatal mortality. Despite its benefits, IMD implementation in Indonesia still encounters various challenges, and few studies have examined its influencing factors by region or facility. This study aims to identify the factors associated with IMD implementation among postpartum mothers at RSUD Dr. Kanujoso Djatiwibowo Balikpapan. A descriptive analytic design with a cross-sectional approach was used. The study involved 42 postpartum mothers selected through non-probability saturated sampling. Data collection was conducted using questionnaires, and the results were analyzed with univariate and bivariate methods using the Chi-Square test. A total of 61.9% of respondents practiced IMD. Most had good knowledge (64.3%), belonged to the risk parity group (52.2%), received family support (54.8%), and had support from health workers (57.1%). Significant relationships were found between IMD implementation and maternal knowledge (p = 0.033), family support (p = 0.017), and health worker support (p = 0.003). These findings suggest the importance of education and support to improve IMD practices. In conclusion, IMD implementation is significantly influenced by maternal knowledge, family involvement, and healthcare provider support. Strengthening educational and support interventions is essential to enhance IMD coverage in health facilities.

Abstract

Insufficient understanding and misconceptions about contraceptive techniques may impede women's capacity to make educated reproductive health choices. This study investigated short-term alterations in family planning knowledge subsequent to counseling among women not utilizing contraception in the jurisdiction of Siatas Barita Community Health Center, North Tapanuli Regency, Indonesia. A pre-experimental one-group pretest-posttest study was executed in Pancurnapitu Village from July to December 2025. A total of 53 women aged 20 to 49 years, who were not utilizing contraception, were recruited via convenience sampling. The assessment of family planning knowledge was conducted prior to counseling and 12 days post-intervention utilizing a structured 10-item true-or-false questionnaire. Total scores were categorized as good knowledge, assigned a code of 1, or poor knowledge, assigned a code of 2; hence, a lower mean coded score signified superior knowledge. Differences between pre-intervention and post-intervention scores were examined utilizing a paired-samples t-test. The average coded knowledge score diminished from 1.74 ± 0.445 prior to counseling to 1.40 ± 0.494 subsequent to therapy, resulting in a mean difference of 0.34 points. The decrease in scores, which signified enhanced knowledge, demonstrated an improvement in family planning knowledge subsequent to counseling (p < 0.001). Furthermore, 35 women (66.04%) indicated a willingness to utilize contraception but had not obtained consent or support from their husbands or family members. Family planning counseling correlated with enhanced short-term knowledge in women not utilizing contraceptives. These findings endorse the use of structured, client-centered, and rights-based counseling within basic healthcare services. The lack of a control group, the application of non-probability sampling, and the brief follow-up duration constrain causal inference and generalizability. Additional controlled trials employing validated instruments, representative populations, and extended follow-up durations are necessary to ascertain if enhanced knowledge results in informed and maintained contraceptive utilization Keywords: Contraceptive Counseling, Family Planning, Health Education, Reproductive Health, Women Of Reproductive Age.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the relationship between stress levels, sleep quality, and menstrual patterns in female Midwifery students at the Padang Ministry of Health Polytechnic. High academic stress in students often impacts their physical and mental health, including sleep quality and menstrual patterns. The study design used a correlational cross-sectional approach, involving 90 female students from the 2017-2019 intake who were selected using a purposive sampling technique. Data were collected through questionnaires to measure stress levels (Perceived Stress Scale), sleep quality (Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index), and menstrual patterns. The results showed a significant relationship between stress levels and sleep quality (p = 0.007), with female students experiencing high stress tending to have poor sleep quality. However, no significant relationship was found between stress levels and menstrual patterns (p = 0.849), indicating that factors other than stress, such as diet and physical activity, may play a greater role in influencing menstrual patterns. This study recommends that educational institutions implement stress management programs to improve the quality of life and health of female students, especially in managing high academic stress.
