Abstract

Traditional medicine / herbal medicine is a product consumed by many people, so the security aspect must be maintained. In order for herbal products to be safely consumed, herbal medicine producers must understand and apply sanitation and hygiene in their production processes and packaging methods. The community service activities aim to improve the knowledge and skills of herbal medicine craftsmen about sanitation and herbal hygiene production and how to pack using continuous sealer machines. This activity was held at PJ SUTI SEHATI, having its address at Pengkol RT 02 RW 1 Nguter Sukoharjo and PJ Bintang Mas having the address at Tenongan RT 2 RW 1 Gupit Nguter Sukoharjo. The form of the activity is providing counseling (lectures and question and answer), training and mentoring. The target of the activity is the leader / owner and employees of herbal medicine craftsmen. The steps of the activity include, preparation, implementation and evaluation. The participants received an explanation of sanitation and hygiene and how to pack using continuous sealer machines. Evaluation has been carried out after service activities which result in packaging using a continuous sealer machine 3-4 times faster and more hygienic.

Abstract

Research on the synthesis and characterization of SiO2/ZnO nanocomposites from zinc waste and Mount Merapi volcanic ash has been carried out. The semiconductor used was ZnO using a SiO2 as the host material. The use of SiO2 was due to its high efficiency and abundant raw materials. This is because the eruption of Mount Merapi occurs regularly every four years. Apart from the abundant presence of SiO2, the source of ZnO from lathe workshop waste is also easy to obtain. The research aims to reduce the volume of zinc waste from the lathe and volcanic ash, which was not optimized. Zinc waste and volcanic ash were synthesized into nanocomposites. Then the obtained nanocomposites were characterized to determine their effectiveness in degrading various wastes. The synthesis of SiO2/ZnO nanocomposites was carried out using the sol-gel method as easy and highly effective. The method used is to transform zinc waste into Zn(OH)2. The volcanic ash was extracted with KOH to form potassium silicate (K2SiO3). Zn(OH)2, (K2SiO3) and HCl were reacted together when sonicated, then calcined at 550°C. The results showed that SiO2/ZnO nanocomposites made from volcanic ash and zinc waste produced composite sizes with a size range of 100-200 nm and a uniform circular shape. FTIR analysis results show that SiO has the peaks at wavenumbers of 993.34 and 1109.07 cm-1, while the ZnO peak is at wavenumbers of 443.63 cm-1. The XRD diffractogram of SiO2/ZnO nanocomposites shows peaks at 2θ of 30.42°, 31.56°, and 44.40°.

Abstract

The partners in the Community Service Programme activities are the mothers of RT 1 RW 8 Jumok Jaten. Partners are housewives who have been affected by the Covid 19 pandemic because most of them were laid off by the company. Partners have the opportunity to produce karak without borax. The problems faced by partners are: 1) Lack of knowledge of PKK mothers about the dangers of borax; 2) Limited knowledge and skills about making karak without borax; and 3) Limited knowledge and skills about food safety and packaging. The method that will be carried out to realise the objectives of the Community Service implementation programme is through: 1) Making karak without borax; 2) Financial management training; 3) Marketing management training. The results obtained by the partners were able to make karak without borax which has a compact texture, crispy, and savoury taste, making it safe for consumption.

Abstract

Mitra dalam kegiatan Program Kemandiran Masyarakat adalah CV Bintang Jaya yang terletak di Jl. Nori 10B Ngepakan, Joho, Sukoharjo. Mitra adalah produsen instan kunyit dengan merek dagang SI PINTAR. Mitra memiliki satu keistimewaan yakni instan kunyit dengan 4 macam rasa. Produk memiliki manfaat, namun instan kunyit hasil produksi mitra belum cukup dikenal masyarakat. Proses produksi dilakukan dalam skala rumahan dimana mitra belum sepenuhnya menerapkan standar produksi berdasarkan kriteria Cara Produksi Pangan yang Baik – Industri Rumah Tangga Pangan (CPPB-IRTP). Masalah yang dihadapi mitra yaitu: 1) Alat produksi tidak higienis; dan 2) Belum mempunyai ijin PIRT. Solusi yang akan dilakukan dari kegiatan ini adalah: 1) intoduksi alat parut dan peras; 2) pengurusan perijinan P-IRT. Metode yang akan dilakukan untuk merealisasikan tujuan dari program pelaksanaan PKM yaitu melalui: 1) Pengadaan mesin parut dan peras yang terbuat dari stainless; 2) Pendampingan pengurusan perijinan P-IRT. Hasil yang diperoleh setelah kegiatan pengabdian terkait aspek produksi ialah adanya peningkatan pengetahuan pemilik dan karyawan tentang CPPB-IRTP dan perbaikan tempat produksi yang lebih bersih dan layak. Terkait aspek produksi, terdapat peningkatan jumlah produksi dan perolehan ijin P-IRT dari Dinas Kesehatan.

Abstract

The aim of this study was to create and evaluate the quality of organic fertilizer using Unripened coconut waste. The process involves chopping the waste into small pieces and placing it in a container or bucket. EM4 activator liquid is then sprayed onto the waste, followed by the addition of molasses. This process is repeated for the second and subsequent batches. The prepared Unripened coconut waste is covered withblack plastic to maintain anaerobic conditions and a temperature of no more than 60°C. The pile is turned multiple times to stabilize the temperature at ± 35-45°C. The first turning occurs after one week, followedby weekly turning for up to one month. The resulting fertilizer is dried through aeration, sieved, and tested for quality. The water content was determined using the distillation method, while total nitrogen wasmeasured using the Kjeldahl method. Phosphorus was quantified using a UV-Vis Spectrophotometer, and potassium was analysed using AAS. The results indicate that Unripened coconut waste can be utilised as an organic fertiliser. The fertiliser is brown in colour, soft in texture, has an earthy smell, and a temperature of 28°C. The organic fertiliser contains 22.8% water, 0.833% nitrogen, 0.118% phosphorus, and 5.616% potassium. The produced organic fertilizer meets the specifications for fertilizer from organic waste based on nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium content according to SNI 19-7030-2004.

Abstract

Methylene blue is considered a persistent organic pollutant due to the presence of a benzene group that resists degradation, making it difficult to break down. One source of SiO2 is volcanic ash from volcanic eruptions, which accounts for more than 50% of the total mixture of compounds. The abundant SiO2 in volcanic ash can be utilised and converted into silica gel by forming potassium silicate through the chemical interaction between the SiO2 present in volcanic ash and potassium hydroxide. The ZnO/SiO2 composite has been used as an adsorbent to degrade methylene blue artificial dye. This study aims to determine the composition that gives maximum results in MB dye degradation. ZnO/SiO2 composite with volume ratio of 1:1, 1:2, 1:3. In this study, the dye degradation under sunlight and UV light exposure was investigated and the effect of various factors such as mass, time, concentration and pH to achieve the highest possible degradation of MB dye was also studied. The results showed that the most effective reduction in MB dye concentration occurred when using a ZnO/SiO2 composite with a 1:3 ratio, using 100 mg of adsorbent, subjecting it to UV irradiation for 60 minutes, and working with a dye concentration of 10 g/l at a relatively neutral pH of 6. The dye degradation efficiency obtained under these conditions was 97.63%

Abstract

Egg shells have a high enough calcium content which can.be used as a source of calcium. The elderly population is increasing globally and is predicted to reach 1.5 billion by 2050. The quality of life of the elderly must be considered, for example by developing functional foods for the elderly. This literature review will discuss the development of functional foods to reduce the risk of osteoporosis in the elderly. Oxidative stress is one of the factors that accelerates the occurrence of osteoporosis. Various antioxidants, including vitamin C, vitamin E, polyphenols, or lycopene, have been shown to have antioxidant activity, thereby reducing the risk of osteoporosis. In addition, the application of nanocalcium from chicken egg shells in various food products has been reported to increase calcium intake, and its use is environmentally friendly because it can contribute to reducing food waste. The application of antioxidants and nanocalcium can be a good combination, but the amount of some antioxidants must be considered so as not to interfere with calcium bioavailability. Therefore, this literature review aims to explore functional foods for the elderly to reduce the risk of osteoporosis, especially with antioxidants and nanocalcium from chicken egg shells. Eating preferences and eating patterns of the elderly are also a consideration to determine the appropriate form of functional food for the elderly. The results presented in this literature review can be the basis for the development of new food products enriched with nanocalcium from chicken egg shells for the elderly.

Abstract

Metal plating industry waste is the main source of environmental pollution due to heavy metal chromium(Cr6+). The method commonly used in processing chromium metal waste (Cr6+) in industry is by means ofreduction and coagulation. Chromium metal (Cr6+) is highly toxic because it is highly unstable comparedto chromium (Cr3+). Therefore, chromium waste (Cr6+) must be reduced to chromium (Cr3+) before beingdischarged into the environment. The purpose of the study is to reduce the content of chromium ions (Cr6+)in liquid waste of the metal coating industry by the reduction and coagulation process using waste ironpowder and calcium hydroxide. Liquid chromium waste (Cr6+) and iron powder waste are taken from the metal coating industry in Palur Karanganyar, Central Java. Iron waste is in the form of powder that comesfrom the sanding process that is no longer used. The parameters studied were the weight of iron powder, the addition of H2SO4 2N, and the reduction time. The measurement of chrom ion levels (Cr6+) in all treatments was determined by UV-Vis Spectroscopy. The results of the study showed that the chromium level (Cr 6+) of liquid waste of the metal coating industry was 749 mg/L. Theoptimum condition for reducing chromium (Cr6+) is to use 3 gr iron powder, 10 ml of H2SO4 2N, and a reduction time of 7 minutes there is a decrease in chromium (Cr6+) levels by 100% with a chromium level (Cr6+) of 0 mg/L. This result meets the Regional Regulation of Central Java Province Number 5 of 2012 concerning Liquid Wastewater Quality Standards for the Metal Plating Industry which requires a maximum chromium level (Cr6+) of 0.1 mg/L.

Abstract

The synthesis of slow-release Fe-Zn fertilizer from community waste, using iron waste, zinc waste, and chicken eggshells as raw materials, aims to transform underutilized waste into economically valuable products. The study investigates three fertilizer compositions for the ratios 1:1:1, 1:1:2, and 2:1:1 (FeSO4 : CaCO3 : ZnSO4). The synthesis process involves mixing FeSO4, CaCO3, and ZnSO4 with distilled water. After mixing, the fertilizer is dried and characterized using FTIR (Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy) and SEM (Scanning Electron Microscope) - EDS (Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy). SEM analysis reveals irregularly shaped Fe-Zn slow-release fertilizers with uneven surfaces. FTIR results show similar spectral regions among the three variations. The presence of CaO is indicated by absorption bands at 709.80 cm-1, while Zn-O-H bonds appear at 1,070 cm-1. Fe-O bonds are identified at 692 cm-1

Abstract

Hospitals are one of the service facilities that produce large amounts and quality of liquid waste that requires special attention because it contains hazardous materials for public health and the environment. This study aims to determine the quality of COD and BOD effluents in X Hospital. The type of research used is observational with a descriptive approach. The sampling technique used was purposive sampling, where wastewater samples were taken from two points, namely the inlet and the outlet of the WWTP. Based on the results of the laboratory analysis of the wastewater samples from Hospital X, it can be concluded that the average COD value at the inlet of the WWTP was 64.04 mg/L, while the average COD value at the outlet of the WWTP was 47.90 mg/L, and the average BOD value at the inlet was 12.69 mg/L, while the average BOD value at the outlet was 1.60 mg/L. All of these values are qualified according to the Hospital Activity Liquid Wastewater Quality Standards based on Central Java Province Regional Regulation No. 5 of 2012. It is expected that Hospital X will continue to maintain the wastewater treatment plant.
