Abstract

Lactic acid bacteria are known to have the ability to produce antimicrobial compounds known as bacteriocins. This study aims to determine the ability of lactic acid bacteria to inhibit the growth of Salmonella thypii bacteria. In this study, the lactic acid bacteria used were a collection of the Biology Laboratory of the University of Medan Area. Eight types of lactic acid bacterial isolates were used, including IN01, IN02, SF01, SF02, NN01, NN02 SPU01 and SPU04. A confirmation test was carried out on the growth of lactic acid bacteria and Salmonella thypii by visual and microcopic confirmation through differential staining. The results showed that all lactic acid bacteria were a group of gram-positive bacteria in the form of bacilli. The survival of lactic acid bacterial isolates in the environment with variations in pH and salt levels was indicated by the number of colonies that grew after the incubation period. The antagonistic ability of lactic acid bacteria in suppressing pathogenic bacteria was proven by the presence of an inhibition zone in the form of a clean area around the pathogenic colony. It is known that the SPU01 and SF01 bacterial isolates have the highest inhibition zone values, namely 29.79 mm and 28.13 mm.

Abstract

Bacteria are microorganisms that are abundant in the environment. Isolation of bacteria has been carried out from various sources of water, air and soil. Soil is a material that is rich in nutrients needed by various organisms including bacteria, which are capable of producing secondary metabolites that can be utilized in various fields. Different sources of isolates will produce different characteristics of the bacteria. This research aims to determine the type and characterization of bacteria originating from burnt waste soil. The research was conducted using a qualitative descriptive method. The soil sample used is burnt waste soil. The results showed that 6 bacterial isolates from burnt waste soil had different characteristics, namely TBS01, TBS02, TBS03, TBS04, TBS05, TBS06. Microscopic identification results showed that the bacterial isolates TBS01 and TBS02 were gram-negative bacteria and the other isolates included gram-positive bacteria. Differences in morphological and microscopic characteristics indicate different types of bacterial isolates.

Abstract

The patikan kebo plant is used to cure respiratory infections, malaria, liver, hypertension, gastrointestinal, skin diseases, accelerate wound healing, antidotes, hepatitis, rheumatism and tumors. The purpose of this study was to determine the antifungal activity of patikan kebo. The research method was carried out experimentally with the paper disc diffusion method. The antifungal activity test of each concentration (1%, 2%, 3%, 4%, ketoconazole, DMSO) had respective values (7.14 mm, 7.67 mm, 8.51 mm, 8.80 mm, 26.81 mm, 0 mm). The content of secondary metabolites in the patikan kebo plant are saponins, tannins, alkaloids, steroids/triterpenoids and flavonoids. The patikan kebo plant has medium category antifungal potential.

Abstract

Infectious diseases are one of the health problems because they cause new infectious diseases caused by antibiotic resistance. So it is necessary to search for new antibiotic agents that are sourced from natural ingredients such as jackfruit plants. Jackfruit plant (Artocarpus heterophyllus Lam.) has many benefits ranging from roots, stems, leaves, fruits and seeds. Jackfruit plant has pharmacological properties as anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antimalarial, antifungal activity, cytotoxic, tyrosinase inhibitory activity and antimicrobial. The purpose of this study was to determine the study of jackfruit plants that have potential as antimicrobials. The research method was carried out using a literature review with online media based on the Web, Scopus, PubMed, Science Direct, ResearchGate, Google Scholar used for publication. The results showed that jackfruit has antimicrobial activity due to the content of bioactive compounds such as: tannins, flavonoids, catechins, artocarpin and artocarpanone. Jackfruit plant parts that have the potential as antimicrobials are the leaves, jackfruit skin, seeds and roots. Jackfruit plants have potential as antimicrobials against Escherichia coli, Bacillus subtilis, Staphylococcus aureus, Propionibacterium acnes, Klebsiella pneumonia, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Streptococcus mutans, Mycobacterium tuberculosis, Plasmodium falciparum, and Vibrio cholera.

Abstract

Antibiotics are drugs used for infections caused by bacteria. Amoxicillin and tertacycline are antibiotics used to inhibit the growth of Escherichia coli. Escherichia coli bacteria can cause urinary tract infections, diarrhea, gastroenteritis, pneumonia, septicemia, and meningitis. The purpose of this study was to determine the diameter of the inhibition zone of amoxicillin and tetracycline antibiotics in inhibiting Escherichia coli bacteria. Experimental research method with antibacterial activity test using paper disc diffusion method. The results showed that amoxicillin and tetracycline antibiotics had inhibition zone diameters of 18.4 mm and 35.76 mm, respectively, with strong and very strong categories. The conclusion of this study is that tetracycline antibiotics are better at inhibiting the growth of Escherichia coli bacteria than amoxicillin.

Hands are the part of the body that comes into direct contact with food and other objects. Preschool students are still prone to putting their hands in their mouths without paying attention to whether their hands are clean or dirty. The aim of this activity is to provide socialization, education and training in the application of personal hygiene through hand washing and tooth brushing activities to Amal Shaleh Perum Kindergarten students. Simalingkar Medan, North Sumatra. The activity was carried out for 2 days, namely on 8 and 12 November 2022. The activity stages consisted of socialization and education, implementation of hand washing and tooth brushing activities as well as singing and dancing activities with kindergarten students. The target of the activity is Amal Shaleh Kindergarten students consisting of 3 classes with an age range of 4-6 years. The activities carried out ran smoothly as seen from the enthusiasm and cooperative attitude of the Amal Shaleh Kindergarten students. With the hope of increasing students' skills, knowledge and awareness in maintaining personal hygiene as an effort to protect themselves from disease attacks.

Abstract

Typhoid fever is a major disease of death in the medical field caused by Salmonella typhi infection with symptoms including fever, mucosal lesions, vomiting, diarrhea, fluid loss, septicemia, and peritonitis. The use of natural plants to cure infectious diseases such as andaliman fruit. The aim of this study was to determine the antibacterial activity of Andaliman fruit extract on the growth of Salmonella typhi. Experimental research method. The Kirby-bauer method was used for the antibacterial test, the maceration method was used for extraction. The results of phytochemical compounds found flavonoids, tanins, saponins, tannins, alkaloids steroids, and triterpenoids in simplicia and andaliman fruit extracts. All extracts have the potential to inhibit the growth of Salmonella typhi, with the diameter of the inhibition zone consisting of 10.04 mm, 12.22 mm, 15.46 mm and 16.68 mm in the strong category. These doses are 10%, 30%, 50%, and 70%. The analysis shows the potential of Andaliman fruit extract as an antibiotic in the treatment of typhoid fever.
