Abstract

This study delves into phonological processes and changes in two distinct categories of loanwords in Japanese: gairaigo (foreign loanwords) and wasei eigo (Japanese-coined English words). Gairaigo are borrowings from foreign languages, predominantly English, while wasei eigo refers to words created within the Japanese language using English morphemes. The phonological adaptation of these loanwords undergoes various processes, e.g., assimilation, syllable structure, attenuation and strengthening, and neutralization. These processes are reflecting the dynamic nature of language contact and cultural exchange. In the case of gairaigo, phonological processes often involve the adaptation of sounds to conform to Japanese phonotactics and speech patterns. This may include the simplification or substitution of consonant clusters, vowel lengthening or shortening, and the incorporation of pitch accent patterns native to Japanese. Wasei eigo, on the other hand, undergoes phonological changes rooted in the native Japanese phonological system. Despite being constructed with English morphemes, wasei eigo words often exhibit phonetic features characteristic of Japanese. Moreover, these words may evolve over time through processes of sound change and assimilation, reflecting shifts in linguistic preferences and cultural influences. Overall, the phonological adaptation of gairaigo and wasei eigo showcases the linguistic borrowing, cultural assimilation, and the phonological systems of both source and target languages. Understanding these processes provides insights into the dynamic nature of language contact and the evolution of linguistic diversity in Japanese society.

Abstract

This research aimed at developing an e-portfolio-based learning module integrated with multi- learning media platforms in engaging students’ learning. Seventy-seven students were involved in this study. They are sophomores at a vocational college in Business Administration Department in the academic year 2021/2022. This study is a research and development typed research by implementing design-based research (DBR) to develop a digital learning module based on e-portfolio principles. Three things were accomplished as a result of this research's implementation. First, the results of the needs analysis of students who are still getting English lectures at this moment (current learners), followed by the findings of observer observations in the classroom learning implementation. Second, the outcomes of designing and creating e- portfolio-based instructional materials in the form of a digital module that is connected to various digital platforms with the aid of QR codes. The analysis findings about the efficiency of using produced electronic modules come in third. The result of the current learners’ perception showed that the implementation of the e-portfolio learning model was able to improve student's learning achievements, however, the urgency in developing a digital module integrated with a multi-learning media platform was necessarily taken into account. Moreover, a digital module was designed based on the students’ needs and digitalization era 4.0. Consequently, the outcome of the digital module's development had a favorable impact on students' engagement to learn in a blended learning environment.

Abstract

This study examined the perception of the Android-based Duolingo application as an English learning resource among students enrolled in the D3 Civil Engineering program at Bali State Polytechnic. Data were collected through surveys and interviews involving thirty-two fourth-semester students, randomly selected from one class to represent the entire population. The study employed a quantitative approach, focusing on gathering detailed information regarding students' perceptions of Duolingo as a supplementary tool for learning English. The results indicated that 3.70% of respondents had a very good perception of Duolingo, 51.85% had a good perception, 33.33% had an adequate perception, and 11.11% had a poor perception. These findings suggest that the majority of D3 Civil Engineering students at Bali State Polytechnic view the Duolingo application positively. Overall, it can be concluded that Duolingo is perceived as an effective and beneficial resource for enhancing English language skills among these students.
