Abstract

Reading is a fundamental tool for gleaning information and engaging in many fields of literacy. However, poor reading outcomes among Indonesian students on the PISA test indicate a low literacy level. The reading ability referred to in this study is the ability to understand reading texts on various topics and forms. This study used a sample of 234 students from eight schools in North Kalimantan Province. The data were obtained from reading tests carried out by students via computers. The test consists of 40 multiple-choice questions, short answers, and essays. The data was processed in several stages, including data reduction and item calibration using the Rasch Model. Apart from reading tests, data were also obtained through questionnaires to gather information about literacy activities carried out by students at school and at home. The results showed that nationally the average reading literacy ability of students in North Kalimantan Province was at a low level, namely at score 349, while the highest reading literacy ability average score in Indonesia was 489. The results also showed that there was a relationship between students' reading literacy skills and their conditions and habits at home. As a recommendation, students need to be more accustomed to reading multimodal texts through multimedia devices. It is important to make them capable of understanding texts containing not only words, but also pictures, numbers, graphs, and tables as demands for modern literacy. Moreover, parents also need to be to encourage to help improve the students’ literacy capacity.

Abstract

Language development begins at the beginning of human life, but the stages are diverse. This study aimed at describing an 8 year old child speech delay and identifying the causes of the delay and its relation to language performance at school. A case study design encountered that AA could not speak clearly especially, and a hearer did not understand what she said except her mom. For almost one semester, the researchers tried to observe AA's speech pattern and found some speech error-unclear saying words containing H and Z, and X at the beginning and the end of the word. Often the researchers found her emotional when she was not able to perceive and deliver her feelings through words. Parents’ roles and background in the interview transcripts have also been one reason why AA got worse in speaking. However, the language subject result in the AA report book was not poor. The teacher had an alternative language learning to motivate The child to perform her best. Parent support is needed more as AA is under teacher supervision to learn in a higher class.

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

Multilingualism in Indonesia refers to local or regional languages as the first or mother tongue, Bahasa Indonesia as the second or official language, and foreign languages in which English is the most spoken foreign language in Indonesia. Such a condition may bring us to code-mixing. Code-mixing is using more than one language or language variety in conversation. To some linguists, code-mixing is perceived as a negative phenomenon for several reasons, such as reducing the sense of necessity to use the 'original' language of the speakers. However, this view might only be found among the older generation. How about the younger generation's perception of the code-mixing phenomenon? This study explores the students' perception of code-mixing in daily conversations. The study used a questionnaire-based research method and involved 83 respondents from majors such as English education, Islamic broadcasting communication, and management aged 18-23. The results show that 73.5% of the respondents consider code-mixing a normal phenomenon in daily conversations. Furthermore, 51.8% of the respondents perceive code-mixing as usual while engaging in conversation, 41% as a positive phenomenon due to bilingual capacity, and only 7.2% perceive code-mixing as a negative one regarding disrespectful reasons to Bahasa Indonesia.

Abstract

Systemic Functional Linguistics provides many resources for translation studies. Some translation scholars even explicitly suggested SFL approach to develop their theories. One of SFL key features which can be applied to measure translation quality is thematic structure. This is possible because a good text should be composed of cohesive clauses (Eggins, 1994; Emilia, 2011). While theme has widely become topics in research on translations from other languages into English, it is still rarely explored in bahasa Indonesia-English translation. Using Eggins’ (2004) model of thematic progression, the authors explored how this feature was used in two English versions of Indonesian short story Jalan Lain ke Roma. Through the analysis and the comparison of thematic progression in source text and the two target texts, the authors attempted to show which text is better based on the thematic choices. The result of this study shows that although there is not significant difference between the two versions, the text titled Another Road to Rome is better at cohesion than the other titled Another Way to Rome. Keywords: Systemic Functional Linguistics, thematic structure, thematic progression, translation quality

Abstract

The development of the foreign-oriented manufacturing industrial sector in Indonesia brings consequences to the increase of the need for translation services. It eventually has consequences to the need of standardization of translators and standardization of translation services which have not been available. This study aims to discuss the standardization of interpreting and translation services abroad which can be used as a reference for standardizing translation services in Indonesia, as well as how Indonesia significantly requires standardization of interpreters and translators. This study adopts a qualitative-descriptive approach. The data collection technique is study of document using content analysis. The results of the study show that foreign countries, particularly developed ones such as the United States and some European Union countries have standardized their translation services in order to improve the quality of translation and the quality of services of translation-service providers. In addition, standardization of translation in Indonesia is necessarily needed in order to give benefits for translation service providers to be able to provide good quality translation and standardized services. In other words, standardization is highly required to provide a benchmark and guidance regarding the translation services and products. Keywords: standardization, translation services, interpreter and translator.
