Abstract

The objective of the research was to determine whether there was a significant effect of the use of digital systems on the speaking skills of the students in Seventh Grade Junior High School. This research was a quantitative research with a quasy experimental design. It was conducted in seventh grade SMP Negeri 5 Tanjungbalai in the academic year 2020/2021. The total population was 93 students and researchers took 30 students for the experimental class and 30 students for the control class which meant 60 students as a total sample. In collecting data, researchers used orraly tests by speaking about the plot of the cartoon as instruments. Tests were pre-tests given before treatment and post tests given after treatment. Then, the data obtained were analyzed using t-test ar SPSS 16 with a significance level of 5% (0.05). Furthermore, the researcher found that the post –test mean score in the experimental class was higher than the control class (6.484 > 1.688). At a significant level of 5% (95% confidence level) which shows the score 18,976. The t-test result also showed that t0 (6.484) was higher than t table as a significance level of 5% (1.688). Therefore, the results of t0 > t table result that H0 (null hypothesis) was rejected and Ha (alternative hypotheiss) was accepted. The calculation of the effect size was 1.68 which was within the range of effect criteria including the strong effect. Thus, the use of the cartoon movie has a signficant effect on students’ speaking ability in the seventh grade students of SMP Negeri 5 Tanjungbalai in academic year 2020/2021.

Abstract

The objective of this study was to get the empirical evidence of the effect of using small group discussion technique on students’ achievment in reading narrative text at the third year students of MTS AL-Washliyah 30 Pematang Guntung. The method used in this study was quantitative through quasi experimental research. The population was all the third year students of MTS AL-Washliyah 30 Pematang Guntung. The total sample was 60 students that were taken by using lecturing technique Instrument of this study was multiplechoise test. Before doing the treatment, the students in experimental class were given the pre-test. Then, the students were taught by using small group discussion technique. At the end of the treatments, the students were given a post-test. T-test was used to analyze the data. Value of tobserve is 4.75 and the degree of freedom (df) is 58, whereas the value t-table on the degree of significance of 5% is 1.67. The T-test revealed that the result is significant; it is determined by the value of t Obsever which is bigger than t table. Thus, Ha is accepted because there is significant effect of using small group discussion on students’reading narrative text ability. Therefore, it can be concluded that using small group discussion is effective to improve students reading narrative text ability at the third year students of MTS AL-Washliyah 30 Pematang Guntung.

Abstract

The aim of this study was to investigate the culture values represented in an English textbook provided by the Ministry of Education and Culture in terms of the type of culture values represented. This is a qualitative research, the data were collected in the form of the reading passages in the textbook. The illustrations that accompany the text analyzed if it assists the interpretation of the meaning to collect data and data analysis in this research was descriptive analysis in order to reveal what cultures values are represented in the textbook, the contents in the reading passages were categorized into the source culture, the target culture, the international culture. The result of this research was found that there was a significant on the findings and discussion the findings and discussion, it can be concluded that the result from analyzing the text book focus on 45 the reading passages, there are 9% that present source culture (SC), 18% present target culture (TC), 26% present international target culture (IC), and until 47% culture free(CF) dominate the cultural content on the textbook “Interlanguage for Second Grader Students of Junior High School by Joko Priyana”.
