Abstract

This study deals with family addressing male and female in Batak Toba Language. The aim of this study to analyse the addresse of Batak Toba people in their social life. This study used descriptive qualitative as a method of reserach. This study was analyse the result of interview of Batak Toba people. The result, there were tweenty male and female addresses that was used by Batak Toba people in family interaction. This adresse is used to show the level of satus and to show respect to the oldest and love to the youngest family member.

Abstract

The objective of the research was to find out whether there is any significant effect of using mind mapping technique on students’ achievement in reading comprehension. The type of research was quantitative research and it was conducted by using experimental design with two classes, in experimental class consisted to 30 students and control class consisted to 30 students. In technique of collecting data, the researcher conducted pre-test, treatment and post-test by giving reading comprehension test which consist of 10 multiple choice items for each test. The result of this research show that there was a significant effect of using partner reading strategy. It can be seen from the difference between student’s mean score of pre-test and post-test in experimental class which improve from 48 to 73. The mean score of post-test control class was 52 while, the mean post-test in experimental class was 73 was higher than control class. It means, mind mapping technique can be applied to improve students’ reading comprehension.

Abstract

The objective of the research was to determine whether there was a significant effect of the use of digital systems on the speaking skills of the students in Seventh Grade Junior High School. This research was a quantitative research with a quasy experimental design. It was conducted in seventh grade SMP Negeri 5 Tanjungbalai in the academic year 2020/2021. The total population was 93 students and researchers took 30 students for the experimental class and 30 students for the control class which meant 60 students as a total sample. In collecting data, researchers used orraly tests by speaking about the plot of the cartoon as instruments. Tests were pre-tests given before treatment and post tests given after treatment. Then, the data obtained were analyzed using t-test ar SPSS 16 with a significance level of 5% (0.05). Furthermore, the researcher found that the post –test mean score in the experimental class was higher than the control class (6.484 > 1.688). At a significant level of 5% (95% confidence level) which shows the score 18,976. The t-test result also showed that t0 (6.484) was higher than t table as a significance level of 5% (1.688). Therefore, the results of t0 > t table result that H0 (null hypothesis) was rejected and Ha (alternative hypotheiss) was accepted. The calculation of the effect size was 1.68 which was within the range of effect criteria including the strong effect. Thus, the use of the cartoon movie has a signficant effect on students’ speaking ability in the seventh grade students of SMP Negeri 5 Tanjungbalai in academic year 2020/2021.

Abstract

The objective of this study was to get the empirical evidence of the effect of using small group discussion technique on students’ achievment in reading narrative text at the third year students of MTS AL-Washliyah 30 Pematang Guntung. The method used in this study was quantitative through quasi experimental research. The population was all the third year students of MTS AL-Washliyah 30 Pematang Guntung. The total sample was 60 students that were taken by using lecturing technique Instrument of this study was multiplechoise test. Before doing the treatment, the students in experimental class were given the pre-test. Then, the students were taught by using small group discussion technique. At the end of the treatments, the students were given a post-test. T-test was used to analyze the data. Value of tobserve is 4.75 and the degree of freedom (df) is 58, whereas the value t-table on the degree of significance of 5% is 1.67. The T-test revealed that the result is significant; it is determined by the value of t Obsever which is bigger than t table. Thus, Ha is accepted because there is significant effect of using small group discussion on students’reading narrative text ability. Therefore, it can be concluded that using small group discussion is effective to improve students reading narrative text ability at the third year students of MTS AL-Washliyah 30 Pematang Guntung.

Abstract

The aim of this study was to investigate the culture values represented in an English textbook provided by the Ministry of Education and Culture in terms of the type of culture values represented. This is a qualitative research, the data were collected in the form of the reading passages in the textbook. The illustrations that accompany the text analyzed if it assists the interpretation of the meaning to collect data and data analysis in this research was descriptive analysis in order to reveal what cultures values are represented in the textbook, the contents in the reading passages were categorized into the source culture, the target culture, the international culture. The result of this research was found that there was a significant on the findings and discussion the findings and discussion, it can be concluded that the result from analyzing the text book focus on 45 the reading passages, there are 9% that present source culture (SC), 18% present target culture (TC), 26% present international target culture (IC), and until 47% culture free(CF) dominate the cultural content on the textbook “Interlanguage for Second Grader Students of Junior High School by Joko Priyana”.

Abstract

The objective of the research is to know the causes of students' anxiety in speaking English, the types of students' anxiety, and the level of students' anxiety in speaking English in the eleventh grade of SMK Negeri 1 Lubuk Pakam. This study uses qualitative methods by collecting data through observation, interviews, questionnaires, and documentation. The results of this study indicate that there are 3 factors of student anxiety in learning English according to Horwits' theory (2011), namely (1) Communication Apprehension, where students have difficulty speaking English because they do not have much knowledge about English, (2) Test Anxiety, where students feel anxious when they have to take an English test, and (3) Fear of Negative Evaluation, where students are afraid that the teacher and their friends will laugh if students make mistakes. According to Thomas (2009), there are also two types of student anxiety: State Anxiety and Trait Anxiety. And the questionnaire was developed by Horwitz with 33 statements, the results showed that 1 student (10%) experienced a high level of anxiety, 7 students (70%) experienced a moderate level of anxiety, and 2 students (20%) experienced mild anxiety.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to determine whether the use of short films can increase students' ability to increase idioms through the discussion method at SMA Negeri 1 Raya Kahean Academic Year 2021/2022. This study uses an experimental method which is conducted in three procedures. Each procedure consists of, pre-test, treatment and post-test. The sample was divided into two groups, 30 students as an experimental group taken from class XI IPA 1 and 30 students as a control group taken from class XI IPA 2. In collecting data, the test used by researchers were pre-test and post-test. Observations and multiple-choice test instruments were used in this study. The results showed that using Nadia's Short Film through the discussion or group method had a positive effect on increasing idiom knowledge in students of SMA Negeri 1 Raya Kahean Academic Year 2021/202 This can be proven based on the research results in the experimental group, previously the highest student pre-test result was 65 and the lowest was 45, and the highest student post-test result was 85 and the lowest was 70. As for the research results in the control group, the highest student pre-test result was 55 and the lowest was 40, and the highest student post-test result was 70 and the lowest was 50. It shows that students are helped in increasing knowledge with Short Film media followed by the discussion method. Further research is also needed in elaborating and finding more techniques to solve this problem in learning

Abstract

The objective of this research was to find out the effect of using anagram game of students’ english vocabulary mastery at the eighth-grades of SMP Negeri 2 Deli Tua Academic Year 2021/2022. The type of research was quantitative research, and it was conducted by using experimental design with two classes, in experimental class consisted of 30 students and control class consisted of 30 students. In technique of collecting data, the researcher conducted pre-test, treatment and post-test by vocabulary test. The data were analyzed by using t-test formula. The result of the data showed that tobserve (11,2) value was higher than the ttable in which tobserve>ttable (11,2>1,68). The finding showed that the hypothesis was accepted. It can be concluded that there was significant difference score in vocabulary skill for the students who were taught by anagram media and who were not taught by anagram media. Based on the explanation above, the researcher concluded that Anagram Media is effective for teaching students’ understanding in learning vocabulary skill of the eighth-grade students at SMP Negeri 2 Deli Tua Academic Year 2021/2022

Abstract

The aim of this research is to develop descriptive writing material, determine the validation of descriptive writing material and to increase the effectiveness of descriptive writing material by using the padlet application in teaching writing for class X students at SMK AL Washliyah 3 Medan. The research was carried out using the Development Research method, and the evaluator was an English subject teacher, and the subjects were class X students. Pre-test and post-test were carried out to determine the effectiveness of the results. The pre-test results obtained an average score of 70.15% in the satisfactory category; The post-test results show an average score of 82.15% in the very good category. The process of developing teaching materials includes three aspects of assessment: 1) development of descriptive writing materials; 2) validation of descriptive writing material and; 3) effectiveness of descriptive writing materials. Material expert validation includes content with an average score of 3.15% and percentages 4.35% in the superior category. Feasibility of presenting teaching materials has an average score of 5.67% in the superior category, and linguistic elements have an average score of 4.25% in the superior category. The conclusion shows that the design for developing descriptive text teaching materials using a scientific approach in English subjects is very effective.

Abstract

Basically, language is a means of oral and written communication. People use language to express their ideas and desires to others such as when they ask for help from others. According to Danzalan (2016), language allows people to recognize and express their emotions and thoughts. Language is used by humans to recognize and understand each other. As we know, God created humans in various conditions and personalities, so they must interact with each other. As Nursyamsi (2006) states that one way to communicate is through speaking
