Abstract

Encouraging Male Participation in the Family Planning Program Through Improving Understanding of the Contraception MethodsABSTRACTMale involvement is one of the challenges of the family planning program in many countries, including Indonesia. The family planning program, which focuses on women in a society that adopts a patriarchal structure, causes the perception that women have responsibilities in regulating pregnancy. This community engagement initiative was developed to promote husbands' involvement in family planning programs through an increased understanding of contraceptive methods. After engaging in this activity, it is hoped that the husbands will have broad insights into contraception methods. This community development was carried out through the Field Study Experience (PBL) of Faculty of Public Health Universitas Ahmad Dahlan in Dusun Modalan, Banguntapan, Bantul, from 19 to 20 February 2020. Through village group meetings, the approach taken was a medium of community involvement and education about the rumors and truth about contraception and family planning practices. This community service initiative has been shown to substantially increase male knowledge on family planning issues (mean difference = 27.40; 95% CI = 12.64-42.17; p-value = 0.001). Community involvement in the process of determining priority problems makes interventions become a community need. This indirectly causes the target to engage actively during the activity, consequently increasing their understanding of family planning. Keywords: contraception; family planning; male involvement.

Abstract

Background: Early sexual debut by adolescents is a major public health issue with long-term consequences for sexual and reproductive health. Research has highlighted the role of social skills, peer influence, and social norms in shaping the risk of early sexual initiation among adolescents. However, there is still insufficient evidenceto contextualize the contributing factors in socio-ecological framework, especially in the era of disruptive technologies in Indonesia. Objective: This study was to examine the individual and community-level factors associated with early sexual debut in adolescents socio-ecological framework. Methods: This cross-sectional study utilizing data from the 2017 Indonesia Demographic and Health Survey (IDHS). Individual-level factors included gender, age, work and school participation, dating experience, perceived peer pressure and access to sexual and reproductive health (SRH) information. Factors at community level include the area of residence and community internet access. Multilevel logistic regression was used, with effect sizes reported as odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI).Results: Adolescents with dating experience (OR: 18.41; 95% CI: 8.14–41.62), those with friends who had an early sexual debut (OR: 6.24; 95% CI: 4.81–8.09), and those who had a good understanding of pregnancy prevention (OR: 1.73; 95% CI: 1.41–2.11) were more likely to experience early sexual debut. Protective factors included discussing SRH with teachers (OR: 0.76; 95% CI: 0.64–0.90) and first exposure to SRH education at the junior (OR: 0.60; 95% CI: 0.47–0.77) or senior high school level (OR: 0.41; 95% CI: 0.23–0.74). An analysis at Community-level has shown that adolescents in areas with high internet accessare 59% less likely to engage in early sexual debut than their counterparts. Conclusion: Individual and community-level factors, including internet access, influence adolescent early sexual debut. Reinforcing sexual and reproductive health education in formal education systems is essential, especially in areas with limited acces to internet.

Abstract

Background: The COVID-19 pandemic has spread dramatically since March 2020. At the end of May 2020, the Indonesian government stated that Indonesia would soon enter a new phase facing COVID-19. This phase forced people to adopt new living norms to suppress the spread of COVID-19. This study attempted to analyze how the society in Indonesia adapted to new norms and their relation with perceived susceptibility, severity, benefits, and barriers experienced using the Health Belief Model theory.Method: This cross-sectional study voluntarily involved 948 participants across the island of Java through an online survey conducted between June 30 to July 9 2020, with Google Forms. The indicators measured in the study were: healthy living practices, changes in healthy behaviour, perceptions of susceptibility, severity, benefits, and barriers to the COVID-19 pandemic. Results: The study found that more than half of the respondents practised a healthy lifestyle during the COVID-19 pandemic. Most of them admitted that their health behaviour was better than before the pandemic. People with positive perceptions of the benefits and barriers to COVID-19 practiced a healthy lifestyle during the pandemic better (AOR = 1.72; 95% CI = 1.20-2.48 and AOR = 2.24; 95% CI = 1.60-3.14, respectively). People who had positive perceptions of susceptibility and severity about COVID-19 problems had a higher chance of improving previous preventive behaviour (AOR = 2.06; 95% CI = 1.37-3.09 and AOR = 1.79; 95% CI = 1.20-2.69, respectively). Thus, the conclusion was Indonesian people have positive practices and perceptions about the susceptibility and severity of COVID-19, which are useful for enforcing COVID-19 preventive behaviour.

Abstract

Introduction: The growing demand for Sharia-based healthcare services amid the rapid expansion of the global halal industry has driven Sharia hospitals in Indonesia to continuously improve customer satisfaction. Studies have primarily focused on provider-side determinants such as Sharia compliance, while research integrating both provider factors and internal customer factors such as religious commitment remains limited. This study aimed to analyze the influence of customer’s religious commitment and hospital Sharia compliance on customer satisfaction at Nur Hidayah Hospital, Bantul, Special Region of Yogyakarta. Research Methods: A cross-sectional design was employed with a sample of 100 inpatients. Data were analyzed using multiple linear regression to estimate regression coefficients (b) and 95% confidence intervals. Hypothesis testing was conducted at a 0.05 significance level. Results: Customer’s religious commitment had no significant effect on satisfaction (b = 0.014; 95% CI = -0.189 to 0.217; p = 0.888), indicating that individual religiosity does not directly determine satisfaction with Sharia-based hospital services. In contrast, hospital Sharia compliance had a positive and significant effect on customer satisfaction (b = 0.324; 95% CI = 0.191 to 0.457; p < 0.001). Conclusion: These findings underscore the importance of adhering to Sharia principles in enhancing customer satisfaction. Therefore, improving service quality in alignment with Islamic values should be a priority in the development of Sharia-compliant healthcare systems.

Abstract

Accurate reproductive health knowledge is essential for adolescents, yet many in Indonesia poorly informed, contributing to risky behaviors. While prior studies have focused on the effectiveness of reproductive health promotion media, limited research has explored the role of social networks in shaping adolescent reproductive health knowledge. This study aimed to investigate the key influencers within adolescents' social networks by analyzing the association between discussion partners on sexuality and knowledge of puberty-related traits. This cross-sectional study utilized data from the 2017 Indonesia Demographic and Health Survey, with a sample of 23,361 unmarried adolescents. We assessed knowledge of puberty onset traits and discussion partners on sexuality issues as predictors. Multiple logistic regression, adjusted for age, gender, wealth index, and residence, was employed to calculate odds ratios with 95% confidence intervals. Approximately half of the adolescents demonstrated a good knowledge of puberty-related traits. Engaging in discussions about sexuality with friends, mothers, relatives, teachers, and health professionals was positively associated with higher knowledge levels. Adolescents who engaged with these sources were more likely to have a better understanding of puberty-related traits. Utilizing key influencers within these networks can be crucial in promoting accurate reproductive health knowledge and reducing risky behaviors in this population.
