Abstract

This survey aims to review statisical report procedures in the experimental studies appearing in ten SLA and Applied Linguistic journals from 2011 to 2017. We specify our study on how the authors report and interprete their power analyses, effect sizes, and confidence intervals. Results reveal that of 217 articles, the authors reported effect sizes (70%), apriori power and posthoc power consecutively (1.8% and 6.9%), and confidence intervals (18.4%). Additionally, it shows that the authors interprete those statistical terms counted 5.5%, 27.2%, and 6%, respectively. The call for statistical report reform recommended and endorsed by scholars, researchers, and editors is inevitably echoed to shed more light on the trustworthiness and practicality of the data presented.

Abstract

This study endeavors to investigate the effects of metapragmatic instructions: role play and elicited conversation negotiated feedback (RP+NF, EC+NF) embedded in Task-Supported Language Instruction (TSLI) on the students’ apology strategy. We used a laboratory-based research design encompassing 75 fifth-semester students of economics major taking English business for international communication in higher educational level. Those students were randomly assigned into one control group and two experimental groups. We utilized a mixed-design repeated measure analysis of variance (RM-ANOVA) to gauge the students’ apology proficiency explicated in a two-test design i.e., apology judgment test (AJT) and apology oral test (AOT) in a three test sessions (pre-, post-, and delayed test). The finding reveals that there is a significant difference between among groups in which both experimental groups outperform the control group in post and delayed tests. Also, a significant increase is explicated in both experimental groups from pre to post test, but not in the control group. While RP+NF provides the most robust of all and stimulates a long term effects with big effect sizes on both test designs, EC+NF fails to provide a long term effect in AOT. Abstract

This paper aimed at exploring the meaning-making processes of conspiracy theories echoed by social media influencers as strategic narrative and communication systems. The topic was grounded in a cultural semiotic approach to dissect the aspects of signifier and signified as construed in social media. A nexus-case study was applied to make a deep analysis of meaning-making construction produced and re-produced by the influencers, taking up data triangulation derived from social media, theoretical frameworks, and empirical investigations. The study revealed that meaning was constructed through manipulating signifiers like Covid-19, Lato-Latto, and Dajjal worshipping, which were related to other floating signifiers to create polarization from the audience's perspective. Further, the meaning-making process was ontologically and epistemically baseless. Advanced recommendations are reiterated through this paper to provide a wide range of insight to cope with the issue presented.

Abstract

This research delves into how Chinese murals in Kya-Kya, a Chinatown of Surabaya, visually convey meaning from the semiotic landscape point of view. Through Widgren's Theory of Form, Function, Process, and Context, this study seeks to discover how Chinese and Peranakan Cultures are represented in two Chinese Murals in Kya-Kya. The data source of this research is taken from the researchers` photographs of a few representatives of Chinese Murals in Kya-Kya. The data analyzed in this study include text (words), pictures, and colors. The findings show that the murals' text, pictures, colors, and shapes carry messages closely tied to the area's history, culture, and norms. They act as complex communication tools. The first mural uses color and Chinese symbols that match traditional Chinese cultural meanings, showing solid cultural connections. The second mural focuses more on the area's history, especially the influence of Chinese immigrants and Peranakan culture on local business and daily life. This is shown through cultural icons like traditional clothes, food, and building styles, a mixture of Chinese, Peranakan, and Javanese cultures. Both murals celebrate Kya-Kya's rich cultural heritage. The implications of this research extend to developing conservation strategies that respect both the artistic qualities and cultural meanings embedded within the murals, ultimately contributing to a deeper understanding of how communities express and sustain their heritage in contemporary contexts.

Abstract

The primary objective of this research article is twofold: First, it examines the perspectives of Indonesian higher school students regarding the use of translanguaging both within and outside the classroom. Second, it analyzes the potential implications of translanguaging practices on their future careers. Adapting a nexus case-study framework, the study purposively selected five participants among 38 students who were pursuing a degree in economics at a private institution in Surabaya, Indonesia. The data were collected through classroom observations, participant reflections, and focus group discussions, then analyzed thematically to trace connections among historical bodies, interactional orders, and discourses in place. The findings reveal that the participants hold loose and gain viewpoints toward translanguaging. While the participants recognize the learning value of small group debates, they prefer to use only English during classroom lectures, reflected by the interplay between their linguistic histories, real-time classroom interactions, and broader societal ideologies monolingual space emerges when individuals conform to the ideals espoused by their social groupings. The participants’ alignment with monolingual norms is shaped by institutional expectations and imagined futures where English accuracy and fluency signals professionalism. Although translanguaging supports learning, they fear its overuse may constrain career advancement.  The consequences of these findings are further discussed in the closing portion of this work.
